More data that confirms Obama's first term was fantastic... Funny how this comes out just after the election.

New figures released by the Census Bureau this week found a spike in poverty numbers last year, going from 49 million in 2010 to 49.7 million last year. The numbers may come as a surprise to Congress, which estimated in September that the poverty rate would drop to 46.2 million. One of the most startling findings showed that almost 20 percent of American children continue to live in poverty.

WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) – As President Barack Obama is set to begin his second term, new statistics on America’s poverty rate indicate that nearly 50 million Americans, more than 16 percent of the population, are struggling to survive.

The Associated Press reports that the new figures are based on an updated formula devised by the Census Bureau to help give the government a better understanding for how to use safety-net programs.
The numbers found that Hispanics and people living in urban areas had a higher chance of struggling to make it financially. Poverty among full-time and part-time workers also saw a jump from its 2010 numbers.

Based on the formula implemented by the Census Bureau, California tops the list as the sate most likely to bring about poverty. The top five is rounded out by the District of Columbia, Arizona, Florida and Georgia.
Good news for the Big Blue State of California.

Yeah leftist who like to crow about that who receives the most benefit from taxes table have been completely silent on the poverty rate by state chart that I posted a few times that shows CA having one of the highest poverty rates per household in the country.

Yeah the note is out there if you dig for it that jobless claims soared. Gee didn't see that coming since they no longer matter to obama.

No surprise... those are the serious costs of Parasite Nation.

No growth... more dependency.... (on others paying the freight).

Hail to Parasite Nation!!! Hail!!!

People who buy into that "But for Obama it would have been worse" argument get what they deserve.

This is the tip of the iceberg. Massive layoffs and cost cutting is underway. I'm seeing it first hand.

This is going to be a VERY different country. You think the divide between rich and poor is noticeable now, Dems? Just wait and see.

Agreed. Obama loves the poor people. That's why he created so many more of them.

At least the unemployed with 401(k)'s will get their cut of the American Pie......but that'll be about it.

pssshhhh.....what are yall talking about? Obama saved the country. If it weren't for Obama winning, Romney would have killed all the poor people and took everything they owned and sold it in a garage sale at the White House to Mark Cuban and his billionaire friends.

They would have forced the poor people who survived to work the garage sale for 35 cents an hour too! While the rich guys filled up condoms with water and used them as water balloons to throw at minorities and women who were asking for their union break during the garage sale.

The sad thing is, the poor, and soon to be poor, love him too.

You do realize there is a connection to this and republican policies. We've been cutting taxes for some time, favoring wealthy and business over workers and poor, and you think this had no effect? You think only Obama is to blame?

These folks basically think it's Obama's fault the sun goes down tonight, so, yeah, they really do place full blame for everything bad happening on him.

Tax cuts going to expire? OBAMA RAISIN YOUR TAXES! Wait, they were temporary cuts from the Bush administration? NO DOESNT COUNT, OBAMA EXTENDED THE TAX CUTS SO THEY ARE THE OBAMA TAX CUTS EXPIRING.

So Obama cut your taxes?

NOPE REPUBLICANS MADE HIM DO IT.

I don't buy that. I just think that a larger % of Americans have decided it makes more sense to take a long vacation than to go out a get a job. (Sorry.)

I agree with you Maggie. My brother in law drew unemployment for 2 years. Do you know when he got a job? Two weeks after his benefits were cut off, in September. He among many others received a letter in September that they would no longer be able to draw unemployment after two full years of it. Not that I disagree with the decision to cut them off, it just made me suspicious of those unemployment numbers that came out in October, right before the election.

But the point I was going to make about my brother-in-law, before I began ranting about something else was this: He could have taken a job at just about any point during the two years. A job wasn't all that hard for him to find. But he held out because he was drawing unemployment and he preferred to not have to work for barely over minimum wage, work nights or weekends. Now that he has to work, he does all three of those things. Barely makes over minimum wage, works nights and weekends. Funny how taking away someone's government benefit check changes their attitude toward work.

I don't even by that. As soon as we had jobs here, people were gone and to work. We essentially have 0 unemployment. In fact, we have more jobs than we have people to fill them in the area. Not good jobs mind you, but jobs.

You're saying that Obama's 2010 tax Cut for the Rich has added to the poverty level?
Please explain how this is so.

I've explained and linked it elsewhere. Not just Obama allowing the cut to continue, but a long, long row of tax cuts and cuts in services have led to an increased gap between rich and poor, placing more people below the tax level. In the past, the wealthy paid at a higher rate, this paid for services designed to move people out of poverty. While it didn't move 100%, there was mobility. This brought more workers into the work force that were making a taxable wage. Cutting taxes and thus those programs, then demonizing the poor, eating away at worker avenues to fight back (unions - with the help of corrupt unions) all left us with more poor who had less ways to move out. Which leads to a larger gap between rich and poor, and a smaller and smaller tax base.

So you DO blame The Obama, at least in part for the increase in poverty.

Cutting taxes and thus those programs....
Specifically, which programs designed to help the poor lift themsleves or of poverty have been cut since the 2001 tax cuts, and how are these cuts significant?
