Census: U.S. Poverty Rate Spikes, Nearly 50 Million Americans Affected

One should never apologise for an obvious handicap
Now, normal people. when, like you, are faced with the fact that they have no objective argument to support their opinion of what should be, will display a modicum of intellectual honest and re-evaluate that opinion.
You, on the other hand, retain your opinion of what should be regardless of that fact, and are apparently quite proud to illustrate to everyone that you have no such argument.
Speaks volumes.

Actually, adjusted for inflation and cost of living changes over the years, the poverty level mimics the first thresholds released in '63 and '64.

Comparing levels of wealth across national borders is quite meaningless. It serves only as a convenient method in which to minimize the plights of those at home and act as a diversionary tactic of sorts.

The census is run by the Federal government, and acts as a mass stat shop, in order to form estimates of benefits doled out by the HHS and other bureaus. Their definitions of poverty are in fact, the exact same, the difference you speak of is the method HHS uses in order to calculate at what level above the poverty level one no longer remains eligible for federal assistance programs.

Doesn't matter, all economies are relative to their own inflation. Hell, you can live for a week on 10 dollars US in some nations.

Besides, the US has regional economics..... 20k is a good salary for a family of 4 when you're living in a small town in the middle of no where, however it won't get you very far in a major US city or metro area...

You seem to have some serious problems. I hope you seek help.

I do appreciate your utter delusionment at my comments.

I cannot receive higher praise than to be insulted by a delusional supporter of the fascist US corpocracy

It can only vindicate the simple truth that I have disseminated

You haven't disseminated squat, other than mindless, petulant opinions that you know you cannot back up with objective arguments.

Breaking Down the Income Gap Into Real Terms - US News and World Report
U.S. income gap between rich, poor hits new high - Los Angeles Times
Rich-Poor Gap Widens to Most Since 1967 as Income Falls- Bloomberg

Maybe having an everwidening income gap between middle and upper class America might not effect you, your family, or circle of friends immediately, but the time will come when it does hit a loved one. Here are a few articles that show why this gap is troublesome.

For one thing the upper class used to generate its income off of middle class purchases and in turn employers offered reasonable monetary wages for a rebound. IOW money flowed in a circle and everyone was profiting. Even working class and working poor could pay rent on the most neager salary.

Today, in a technology, information-based, and quickly changing economy, we have a need for college educated individuals to keep up. Employers are barely willing to train employees for the most basic of jobs, such as factory work. With more kids sinking into poverty, many from good families and afluent neighborhoods, their chances of graduating high school decrease and their chances/ability to go to college diminish also. And if you have never been through the piss poor public education system here, we learn up to 7th grade basics in comparison with other developed countries. Ya ever wonder why the girl at the gas station cant count back change?

We have these poorly educated kids growing up with 2 working parents, a single parent, or relatives, so their family ties are weak or their emotional development could take a hit. They may also be exposed to the dangers of low income neighborhoods. Things like robberies, drugs, guns, gang violence, pack mentality etc... Depending on their age and state of mind you could be looking at the "well to do" Catherine become the next drug dealer, gang member, unwed teenage mother...

Being hungry can lead to longterm health issues, as well as being unable to afford healthy or nutricious food, and thats compounded with subpar healthcare.

Okay so we survive this generation of poverty. We just breeze on through, the rich sewing new holes in their overstuffed pockets. Then what? Even if the majority of Middle Class families survive their new incomes, lifestyles, and bounce back at the first sign of economic rebound, climb the corporate ladder again... We still have millions of recession built Catherines out there. Kids who are inadvertently raised to rebel, to act as masochists or victims, kids who couldnt cope to sudden changes and picks up drugs, has sex/teenage pregnancy, or surpasses the newly invoked statistics by succeeding.

The number of people that cant pay 5xes because the CEOs, are taking bonuses while they take paycuts, develope bad credit because they're upsidedown on their mortgage and the banks have pocketed the stimuluses intended to help them. Kids are having meal after meal of rice, bread, pasta, and other filling but lacking vital nutrients foods, because hey, your rich man making well over what he could ever need to survive can't pay his employees a better wage, play fair with his taxes, or be bothered with the hardworking, down on their luck families who have lost everything to their corporations, banks, and predatory lending practices? They'll kill this nation with their greed and I'm certain our founding fathers wouldn't appreciate a corporate-run USA balancing their deficit on the working and middle classes, just crushing them to death.

Welfare needs to be in place as well as a subtle redistribution of wealth and major overhauls in how much power banks and wall street have.

The widening income gap is a Good Thing. Think about it. Back when we all lived in caves, there was not much of an income gap and there was not much that an ambitious youngster could look forward to. Now it is different . Everyone I know was "poor" when they left home and joined the world workforce to make their own way. Now they can seek fame, fortune, notoriety, whatever their heart desires. Of course there is a drawback: they must choose ... and then they must live with the consequences of their choice, for better or worse.

More data that confirms Obama's first term was fantastic... Funny how this comes out just after the election.

I know the government probably does the best it can with statistics, but I think it's important to remember that the boomers are retiring -- and that their income is drastically effected. I'm not sure the statistics are really an accurate reflection of who's moving out of the Middle Class.

I would assume they're using income tax filings. Don't know how else they could do it, really. Once a boomer retires, his earned income is going to drop. His tax forms are going to reflect that, of course. But that does not mean he doesn't have a paid off home and two free-and-clear automobiles in the driveway.

After having pondered this a while, I no longer believe the stats.

Yes, because the Dark Ages are something we should be basing our financial ideaologies on...

When we lived in caves you didnt have to ask the government for licenses to hunt, gather, and fish. You didnt get permits for weapons to help that process and there was no healthcare so if you got sick, I assume you just laid down to die.

We have the ability to help the poor and maintain a Middle Class America. Wealthy corporations can offer competative wages, insurance benefits, and decent vacation time. They used to and their companies had people move through the ranks internally, they invested in their employees. Now we have people scraping by, no health coverage, no vacation time, and companies are hiring in their managers and other promotional positions externally.

The people working for 5-10 years at a low paying job are making a dollar or 2 more than when they started working and are let go when they get too old or too many fulltime benefits. This isnt the "work your ass off and get ahead" America it used to be. The deck is stacked against the working and middle classes right now.
