Twilight for Twinkies? Hostess Workers Strike as Company Struggles

Will Twinkies now be made in China? That would cross some kind of line I think.

I am predicting a Government bail out, similar to GM and than they will turn the company over to the Union. Obama did say he wants to do to the rest of the Country what he did for GM.

Just more amo for us anti union folk. Not that I needed more, lol.

The Local CBS news (Channel 12, Cincinnati) just reported the Queensgate (just slightly west of Down town cincinnati) Hostess factory is now PERMANENTLY CLOSED.

sorry silly unionistas your jobs just went down the toilet

Lol..funny HOSTESS SUCKED and went out of business GOOD...so miraculously you somehow think americans are going to demand less snack cakes...nope sorry...someone else will SELL MORE snack cakes and hire more....

I worked for Benjamin Moore Paint company when I came home from overseas for a short period of time...so I didnt have to collect unemployment. right next to the ben moore factory was a Sherwin Williams factory....Sherwin Williams was unionized Ben Moore was not....Sherwin williams employees made 50cts more an hour...this is when the minimum wage was 1.60 per hour and ben moore was paying 3.25 an hour..FIFTY CENTS MORE WAS HUGE...plus sherwin williams had far better pension and health benes....
Guess who is still around and thriving and one of the top 10 paint companies in the world....UNIONIZED SHERWIN WILLIAMS..

Benjamin Moore paints are among the highest quality paints in the country today. Benjamin Moore Interior Paint Ranks Highest in JD Power Study

It's owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

I predict that riotous mayhem will ensue if Americans no longer have access to Twinkies. We may even have a nuclear holocaust.

I think it's a sign that the Zombie Apocalypse is imminent.

But he already won reelection and doesn't need union thugs anymore... So under the bus they go.

Funny. I said the same thing about the auto bail out. Not true then, but true now? Explain.

But they are not in the top 10 and I have to go check they may very well be unionized by now...

I looked around, with no luck. I am leaning towards NO, though. Most places that have a union, a quick google search will pull up plenty of news concerning it.

Whether or not they are, Hostess needs their workers to earn less money. They presented a contract that included an 8% pay cut and cuts in pensions. If I were working for this company, I would vote NOT to strike to keep them in business; and then I would quietly look for other employment and see if I could improve on my rate of pay.

$18.40 isn't $20.00 an hour; but it's better than unemployment. I guess. They employ 20,000 workers. 8,436 are hourly workers and 83% are unionized.

Hell yeah. I know many people who would be thrilled to be making 18.40 per hour for making donuts.

That is $41,600 per year making cupcakes? Wow. I know tons of people who would take the $38,272 reduced rate and live good lives with it. This is the tip of the iceberg though. Unions are going to kill as many jobs out of stubbornness as they are going to save as the manufacturing economy further shrinks.

Just so there's no misunderstanding, I pulled that $20/hour out of my . . . hat.

We don't live in a time of responsibility. We live in the "what's in it for me" generation. Self interest rules. From the lowly worker to the much vilified corporate CEO. It's why I would never try to start a business that requires employees, in this climate. It's simply not worth it.

I think it's less about the total pay, and more about the principle. Kinda like the republicans refusing to tax the uber wealthy a bit more. It's really pennies on the dollar, 8 to be exact, lol...but you get a mob mentality...NO CUTS IN PAY....and voila. This happens.

Same with congress, really.

Why you.....actually every time I come to this thread, I leave craving those sugary cinnamon hostess cupcakes so it is all good.

Ok...it's a surprise to me that anyone eats that over-priced garbage anymore. In most cases they sit next to the fresh bakery donuts and pastries..and cost more.

I says we pull together an Occupy Hostess sit in.

Since people have lost faith in their companies, most employees probably don't believe the company that they'll go out of business with a significant work stoppage -- and that they need to make these cuts to survive.

Too bad.

Twilight for Twinkies? Hostess Workers Strike as Company Struggles - ABC News

Personally I blame extremely high executive pay and benefits while at the same time cutting the wages and jobs of workers at the bottom for the perception that companies are lying when they say they are struggling. I remember years ago there were stories of American airlines or some other airlines cutting the wages of their workers and then turning around giving their CEO an extreme high salary and benefits.

I think these companies run into the very same thing my small company ran into. As employees stayed with my company longer and longer, their raises finally priced them out of the job they held. After a year, an employee doing a rote job is pretty well trained. After 20 years, why should he be making three times what I can hire a new person for?

Should we really be rewarding longevity alone? Does that make economic sense to you?

There was your mistake--you gave them raises--know better next time :)
