Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to four years in prison for tax fraud.
Mr Berlusconi and others were accused of buying US film rights at inflated prices via two offshore companies under his control.

The former prime minister is expected to appeal against the verdict.
He has faced a number of trials connected to his business affairs, but has either been cleared or cases have run beyond the judicial time limit.
In the case for which he was sentenced on Friday, prosecutors alleged that part of the money declared for the purchase of film rights was skimmed off to create illegal slush funds, reducing tax liabilities for Mediaset, one of Mr Berlusconi's companies.
The court handed Mr Berlusconi a longer sentence than the three years and eight months requested by prosecutors. The trial began six years ago

The case will be appealed of course, it'll probably go all the way to the Italian Supreme Court but this is a great day for Italy and justice in general.

The fact that a guy like this... who should be in jail right now could get a sentence like this is a testament to the fact that even a guy like him, who was the most powerful man in Italy and one of the richest and influential before he entered politics anyway is just so awesome I can't even contain my glee which I think has caused this last paragraph not to make sense.

ANYWAY!

AWESOME!

Not so awesome.

Sentence reduced to one year. I expect a pablo escobar style prison set up with weekly bunga bunga.

They have to take his age into consideration. Plus there are a dozen other cases running against him, some far more serious than this.. yes that is possible.

Your faith in the Italian justice system is charming.

He's more likely to be back in office than in jail in four years time.

Yes, but with this sentence, I think that he can no longer run for public office. I am not certain, but I think this is the case.

OH I have no faith in the Italian justice system because of Berloscoloony and what he did to it, but the fact is, he is 72+ and normally in European justice systems, such people dont do much time and the other fact is, there are many cases against him still including having sex with underage girls. He thought of running again but this sentence and the other cases are thankfully putting a stop to that.

If we ever start putting our dirty politicians in jail...we wouldnt have many left..good for italy

....the ex Italian PM made the fatal mistake of leaving a money trail behind him.

What he should have left behind him is a blood and destruction trail in other nations - just like ALL US Presidents who have slaughtered civilians in other nations by the millions

You can commit war crimes and atrocities on behalf of your corproate masters, but dont you ever dare take ONE RED CENT that isnt yours - they will hunt you down and f**k you in the end

Sounds like he was too busy swimming through a sea of ***** to cover his tracks. Karma is making up for this injustice.
