He was a larger than life pop music character who raised vast amounts of cash for charity by his very oddness (while gaining access to deprived/disabled kids in the process) His public persona was of an eccentric do-gooder, such that he was associating with the great and the good on charity projects. He could be seen with Prince Charles, and spent many weekends and lunches with Margaret Thatcher. (all of which served to protect him from too close investigation)
There were rumours, but no credible facts, and not only would he simply brazen out any questions, he allegedly went so far as to ask a reporter "Think for a minute, if these allegations were true, would you want to be the one who put an end to all the charity fundraising I do for major hospitals?"

John Peel was another DJ of the time, much more highly regarded by muso's, who championed new bands and the punk movement in particular. He died in 2004, but since the Savile revelations a woman has come forward claiming he "impregnated her" while she was under age. I suspect he didn't ask, and she didn't tell, since she seems to be the only one, and that he just had a casual shag, rather than actively seeking out children, like Savile.

I wonder what was so evil in our culture that allowed this to go to such a degree -- and whether we will ever be successful in rooting it out.

I don't know if I could consider the Peel thing a manifestation of "evil".
