WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court on Tuesday threw out the conviction of Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a former driver for Osama bin Laden who served a prison term for material support for terrorism.

In a 3-0 ruling, the appeals court said that material support for terrorism was not an international-law war crime at the time Hamdan engaged in the activity for which he was convicted.

Hamdan was sentenced to 5 1/2 years, given credit for time served and is back home in Yemen, reportedly working as a taxi driver.

"The government suggests that at the time of Hamdan's conduct from 1996 to 2001, material support for terrorism violated the law of war referenced" in U.S. law, said Kavanaugh, but "we conclude otherwise.".....snip~

So he has been living in Yemen as a Taxi Driver.....was captured in Afghanistan. What better way to learn ones way around in a country they don't know about. Plus in Yemen AQ and others have a grip on that country that isnt breaking. Despite our Drone attacks. Hell they even killed the head of Security for us who had been working in our Embassy for the last 20 years there.

Although I like how the writer threw in that All 3 Judges were appointed by Republican Presidents? Just what is that supposed to mean in correlation to the story?

Yeah.....it was only Bin ladens Driver. All they gave him was 5 and half years. Commuted to time served. Been Free as a bird.

Material support for terrorism means providing the means to commit terrorist acts. Driving Bin Laden around does not mean that standard. Its not like 9/11 could have been averted if Bin Laden had to sit in the drivers seat and find parking himself. Doing domestic work for a mass murderer isn't exactly what I would call ethical behavior, but the charges levied against this man were wrong.

Course then one would have to question that bodyguard status. Because I doubt they told him when the Shiznit hits the fan.....U surrender and just tell them you're the driver!

Wow, I'm amazed that the court would actually deliver a wee bit o' justice!

Yeah, I mean "driving a dude around in a car" hardly fits my definition of "providing material support to terrorism." Plus, ex post facto is unconstitutional in the US. We can't jail people for something that wasn't illegal at the time they did it.

I guess it's not easy to break a law that didn't exist. Maybe another country involved had such a law.
