The program, started 11 years ago by the Southern Poverty Law Center and now in more than 2,500 schools, was intended as a way to break up cliques and prevent bullying.
But this year, the American Family Association, a conservative evangelical group, has called the project “a nationwide push to promote the homosexual lifestyle in public schools” and is urging parents to keep their children home from school on Oct. 30, the day most of the schools plan to participate this year.

..... AFA gets worse and worse....

The Christian Right is neither.

Skepticism of SPLC is well warranted.

Why?

Because of this post I'm already a "hate group."

Jesus doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would support this from the AFA.

The Bible according to the AFA:

"Love your neighbor as yourself. Unless your neighbor is gay, then you should stone them."

If their religion leads them to believe homosexuality is a sin, they have the right to pass those beliefs on to their children. I don't see the problem here.

Most world religions don't accept homosexuality.

The parents are not being violent, they're not being disruptive, they're simply talking about skipping a day of school.

You have the right to teach them that homosexuality is wrong, but the purpose of the event is to say that it's not acceptable to bully someone. For being gay or any other reason. They shouldn't be teaching their kids that that's acceptable.

I get annoyed by the hypocrisy in threads like this. You guys say it's about accepting people for who they are.

What is this thread? It's yet another opportunity for haters to tee off on Christianity, on religion, on traditional values. It's an opportunity for haters to spew their hate.

You guys are no better than the AFA or whoever you're whining about. Hypocrites.

I like to call it mental violence (aka brainwashing)

Yes, except that it has nothing to do with homosexuality.

If religion wasnt so hateful, then you wouldnt see any negative comments.

I'm not hating on anyone's religion. I'm saying that if the thing they're protesting is anti-bullying, you'd think that Christians would be in favor of that. Jesus would be. You're not crying about that hypocrisy. Do they teach that "It's okay to bully Christians?"

The largest sect of American Judaism, Reform Judaism, accepts gay marriage.

Cry me a river. When Christian students have to worry about groups of gay students beating the crap out of them for being abominations, you can start talking about hypicrisy. At the end of the day, if the AFA insists on pretending that anti-bully = pro gay, they're assholes and they deserve to be treated as such.

Most world religions don't accept homosexuality.
Nonsense. Most sacred writings of the vast majority of world religions have virtually nothing to say about it. If you're talking about religious leaders of the Abrahamic religions, then you may have a point.

Well no. This event is about not beating someone up for being gay. How the hell could they possibly find a problem with that?

Why are people who are different so scary?

YOu answered your own question. It is part of the human condition for most of us to fear the unknown or what we do not understand. You can see that clearly on this or any other debate site. Intelligence has nothing to do with it. There are just as many intelligent 'scared" people as dumb ones.

You miss the entire point of this thread. These people use religon to thier own ends. God hates no one and It says so in many places in the New and Old Testament. There are even commandments against judging your neighbor and not loving them. NO one who is religious or a person of faith can come out against a child of God and still claim they are so.

"I am the God of love come and follow me". You can argue my points all you want but if a person says they believe in God - They must prove it and live according to the word every day. Otherwise its just smoke and mirrors to acheive a personal end.

This is also incorrect. Most Jewish sects accept gays. There are also many variants of the Christians that do or have no real opinion one way or the other. Its the self absorbed right wing of the christians who claim to follow the Word that do.

I said, "...may have a point", not that I agreed that he would be correct.

Intelligent people understand that there's nothing to be afraid of. Or maybe it's not intelligence. Maybe some people are just cowards.
