EU to win 2012 Nobel Peace Prize, says Norway public radio

Ever since they nominated (and ultimately gave) the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama after only being in office for six weeks...these awards mean next to nothing to me.

They are clearly little more then fixed, popularity contests.

As I said before, they've been a bit of a joke since Kissinger got one in 1973.

I had my doubts for a long time.

But the Obama debacle sealed the deal for me.

seems to be a lot of hate directed at the EU and Europe in this thread! Doesnt really suprise me as its something I have seen first hand whilst living in the US.

I think some of the more nationalistic of US posters see the EU as a threat to the US's global status. Something like that, or maybe they just really hate us.

The Peace Prize has virtually 0 credibility and is agenda based. After all, they did award Obama one when he had no track record as a president simply because he wasn't Bush or a Republican.

im not really sure what the reason is myself! I have lost count of the amount of times I have heard leading politicians refer to Europe as a negative thing, " we dont want to end up like Europe", " we keep going down this path we will be like socalist Europe" etc. The whole healthcare debate was an eye opener the amount of negative and often inaccurate facts that was flying around about European healthcare was crazy.

It does. Why else would it make at least some folks in our political community seek a means as to counter-balance its potential power?

Actually most Norwegians would never give the peace price to EU. Only 1 in 4 Norwegians agrees with the price. This is the most ridiculous price I have ever seen, even more than Obama and Al Gore. I am truly embarrassed of me country.

The only reason EU got it is because the asshole Jagland is leading the committee, and he is very pro EU.

Prize, not price.

It makes much more sense than Obama and Gore and 1000% more sense than Kissinger. The EU has actually achieved the goal of peace between nations. That's something worth recognising.

That is not impressive. There would have been peace in Europe with or without the union. There are no wars in Asia any more, despite their bloody history and there are no wars in south america either. What makes Europeans so special that they should get a peace prize for not shooting each other?

Why not give it to South America instead? They deserve it more. But do you know who really deserves it? All the people out there who work for peace everyday.


Also, they couldn't have picked a worse time.

Giving the EU a Nobel Prize makes about as much since as Time naming The Protestor as The Person of the Year. Meaningless gesture that undermines the recognition.

I think Higgins was saying that this is wrong. You appear to be saying, "it's fine as long as both sides do it". In any case, I dispute that 'the Europeans' on this forum talk about Americans that way. One or two people may have done; not all the Europeans, unless we all sound alike to you.

And you're entitled to that view. I might even agree with you. The thing is, on this thread, that is not the majority opinion being expressed. People like Peter Grim, Camlon, MMC etc are complaining that the Nobel PP is a joke because Europeans gave it to themselves and that the EU is not worthy of it. That's not the same thing as merely suggesting someone else might be worthier winners.

I suppose they are entitled to their opinions, just like anyone else. I'm just letting you know that this is not MY point. I am not saying that I hate Europe or Europeans at all. In fact, I find the accent rather cute. But anyway, it's not that Europe hasn't done good things, just that they seem to be lazy with awarding the prize.

This prize has become a joke. First, Obama... who hadn't been in office more than a few weeks... now, the EU, which is mired in economic crisis, multicultural clashes, while several of the EU's primary supporters... France, Germany and Spain... spearheaded military attacks on Libya to support the rebellion there.

The mind boggles.
