EU to win 2012 Nobel Peace Prize, says Norway public radio

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

This is like the Oscars, where actors sit in a big room and try to convince each other that they really do have substance and meaning in their lives.

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

lol why are you all getting angry at the EU for this? They did not ask for the award! Are you the same people who cry everytime TIME announces the Man of the Year?

Well, I am sure some more needy people could use all that money they get with the Trophy. Or do you think they will deposit it in the IMF?

I dont care what they do with it too be honest! Again if your angry blame the people that gave the award out not the EU.

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

We see this farce for what it is.

The award is an attempt to legitimize the EU during a time of turmoil. If the EU wants true legitimacy, they need to hold referendums in the UK, in Greece, in Sweden, in Portugal, in Spain... and offer a CLEAR CHOICE whether to remain a part of the EU or become independent.

Or have our democracies evolved so much that the will of the people can no longer be trusted?

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

The EU was established in 1993.

Math is not everybody's strongest suit.

Either that, or some people calculate years like they do the size of the fish they catch.

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

There are many reasons the choice is dubious, but giving it to a political institution is damned strangest.

If they have to do it, give it posthumously to the founding fathers - Jean Monnet and pals.

LONDON (AP) — While some Europeans swelled with pride when the European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize, howls of derision erupted from the continent's large band of skeptics.

To many in the 27-nation bloc, the EU is an unwieldy and unloved agglomeration overseen by a top-heavy bureaucracy devoted to creating arcane regulations about everything from cheese to fishing quotas. Set up with noble goals after the devastation of World War II, the EU now appears to critics impotent amid a debt crisis that has widened north-south divisions, threatened the euro currency and plunged several members, from Greece to Ireland to Spain, into economic turmoil.

Nigel Farage, head of the U.K. Independence Party — which wants Britain to withdraw from the union — called the peace prize "an absolute disgrace."

And Dutch populist lawmaker Geert Wilders scoffed: "Nobel prize for the EU. At a time (when) Brussels and all of Europe is collapsing in misery. What next?"

Conservative lawmaker and former foreign secretary Malcolm Rifkind, whose party is deeply divided on Britain's role in the EU, probably spoke for many Britons when he called the decision slightly eccentric.

"If they want to give the prize for preserving the peace in Europe, they should divide it between NATO and the EU," he said. "Until the end of the Cold War, it was NATO more than anyone else that kept the peace."

Others praised the union's role in reuniting post-Communist Europe but pointed out its greatest failure — the inability to halt the bloody Balkan wars that raged just outside the EU's borders during the 1990s.....snip~

Seems others weren't so happy about it either. At Rifkind got it Right about NATO moreso than EU.

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

The ECSC didn't win the Nobel Prize.

If they had, there wouldn't be any outrage. A lot has happened since 1951.

The earliest incarnation was founded in 1951, the ECSC.

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

The European Community, founded after WW2 =/= European Union.

One was a treaty based upon respecting sovereign rights and identity and making good trade with one another to help the recovery of war-torn nations.

The other is a monstrous coalition of non-elected bureaucrats with maoist tendencies.

Though one monstrously metamorphosized from the other, it is not the same thing in both essence or mission.

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

The Nobel prize has turned into a joke. Last year Obama, now the EU, next year will be probably Putin. :lamo

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

Lot's of bashing of Europe going on :(

They are allies people.

What does Finland have to do with it, I thought we were talking Swedish and Norwegian cheesy crap bands. Is there a band that is a source of ignominy for Finland as well? (this is rhetorical, I really do not care or want to know, esp. on the heels of Abba and Ah-ha).

I find it kinda silly the Nobel Committee is giving out the prize to the EU, it waters down a prize that has already suffered massive image problems of late. It should be recognition for individual efforts or achievements IMO - this makes it much more special and remarkable when the prize is won (provided it was actually earned).

What next? the Nobel prize in medicine going to Japan because everyone lives so much longer there? Maybe give the Prize for Physics to Cern for the Large Hadron collider? How about the prize for literature going to whatever country happens to publish the largest number of novels? Chemistry? make it a coin flip between Dow and Dupont.

The ECSC is now defunct so I'm not sure how that would work. The EU for all intents and purposes is its continuation.

Not true at all, the non-elected bureaucracy existed in its pre-1993 format as well.

An attempt to legitimise the EU by whom? Every EU member state has the right to hold any referendum they want to decide to stay in, leave or renegotiate their membership. It's up to the national governments, not the EU, to organise and permit any such referenda. Your comments are full of inaccuracies. All EU member states are independent nations with their own governments. They consent to EU membership and the common policies that that entails purely by treaty and they are free to withdraw any time they wish. The EU, as a name, has only existed since 1993, but the organisation has existed since 1957 when Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Italy and West Germany signed the Treaty of Rome to create the European Economic Community.

Re: E.U. Wins Nobel Peace Prize.....

Seems fair enough. If the American voters can win one, then why not the Euros.
