Horse****. You dont even know your own freaking history of bigatory, racism, political persecution and worse. You have a whole gulag on Cuba with people being persecuted for their political views and even religious beliefs. You have denied entry to people based on ludacris reasons like "his name is close to that of Bin Laden" excuse, and even put your own politicians on no fly lists "by mistakes".. yea funny that it was always the opposition that got on those lists.. And do you really want to go back more than 10 years of your history? Segregation, lynching, Japanese internment, McCarthy era .. that was just the last century... add to that slavery, Salem witch trials and general religious persecution of Jews and non christians across the US... the US is far far from any angel when it comes to persecution based on political views and religion.

But even hatred out to be able to be vocalized. Why is it a crime to hate something? Hate is a part of being human, and if you hate something, you should have the right to vocalize it. The same goes for anyone who hates someone/something else, like, say, atheists who mock the religious.

Canada's version of free speech is a misnomer, because to them speech only has freedom when it's convenient to them. You only get to say what they want you to say. Speech is not solely about candy and lolipops. There are issues out there that stir up a lot of anger and tension. It is better to allow people to voice their thoughts, emotions, and opinions rather than putting your hand over their mouth, only to enrage them and cut off the hand. It's for this controlling nature of Canada that the U.S.A will always continue to be better than Canada, because America does not and will not put its foot into the mouths of others. As an American, I may not like what others say, but I will fight for them to have that precious right.

I love this country. The fact that this clown can express himself and not be punished by the government makes me love it even more.

This is till the greatest country on earth, because this man's civil rights are protected. Obviously, other countries around the world haven't caught up with us.

Every country has its crazies. It is just that most countries dont let theirs get out so much or allow so much media coverage. And the real crazies actually get put in jail or mental institutions.. Glenn Bech would not have lasted a month in Europe.. he would be in a padded cell by now!

I'll be honest with you. Ive very torn between freedom of expression (free speech) and the ability of anyone spewing vile hate.

just curious, how do you feel about Westboro spewing hate at military funerals?



What i find strange is you cant say the F word on TV, but you can spew hate on the street corner.
We can allow our kids to be subjected to this vile hate on the street corner, but we have to censor "bad language." on TV. I really dont get that.

Yea, a "man's" civil right.. **** the womens civil right, or that of people who happen to love someone of their own sex... oh and dont forget that your "civil" rights have only been protected for last 40ish years... and that was only because of force that they suddenly became "protected".

Your country is nothing when it comes to democracy or civil rights. Hell you guys cant even freaking count votes right! .. yes that was a dig at the 2000 election.

The day your country gets same sex marriage rights across the US.. then you can maybe start to call yourself adequate when it comes to "civil rights".

Nope, not my business what Canada chooses to do. Iirc Canada has a different speech protection than the U.S. and religious intolerance is covered so it's their right to bar him from entry. It would be a different story had this been the U.S.

Got it completely wrong.

Free speech is entrenched in our charter of rights and freedoms. What is NOT is hate speech lie for the purpose of inciting hatred and violence against any particular group. There is also a rarer form in regard to deliberately lying to incite hatred/violence.
There is a substantial difference:

I can say that all neo-nazis are deformed mutant knuckledraggers and thats okay,.

If I say that all neo-nazis are deformed mutant knuckledraggers that true canadians should shoot them on sight - that is not okay.

You can mock religion, you can make fun of immigrants, you can say odious things about whomever you want. What you can't do is incite others to violence and hatred.

We don't stop neonazis from protesting. We don't stop bigots from voicing their bigotry. We don't stop anyone from criticizing anyone else.

And of course we have the other same restrictions to free speech that America does.

Also, wasn't Ann Coulter banned from Canada as well? Did she "incite violence," too?

We have the right to deny people entry just like Canada does. Didn't we ban Amy Winehouse from entry? I know Japan did. I think it's funny. If you've lived a life and portrayed yourself as an upstanding citizen then you can wonder aloud at why a country bans your entry, but little can be done about it. It's a country's right after all. But when you portray yourself as some kind of radical thinker, then you can hardly be surprised when a nation doesn't want you around. It's something to consider before spewing hate out in public.

Things could have been worse for the preacher. He could have been accepted into Canada and then held in containment to be tried for "crimes against humanity." He could've called the American consulate for help who might reply with, "Yeah, we'll get right on that. Excuse me, I need to go for walkies with the poodle." He should be thankful Canada was direct about things and told him to piss off up front.

Can burn whatever, as long as it isn't inciting violence.
If burning an american flag made americans all over the world go ape**** and riot, then you couldn't burn a flag. If burning a Koran makes muslims all over the world go ape**** and riot, the you couldn't burn the koran, because you would be deliberately inciting violence.

Coulter was not banned from Canada. She had a lecture cancelled by the university could not guarantee security for her because there was a very negative reaction on the part of students to her vitriolic public personna.

It is not a crime to hate in this country. It is a crime to spread hatred and incite violence with that hatred. I can express an extreme hatred for Stephen Harper all I want. It become a crime when I start public forums, recruit people, hold campaigns, make claims of Stephen Harper's imminent death, then it becomes a crime. We have the Nothwithstanding Clause for this reason. Not to simply force people to be nice to each other.
