STOCKHOLM — Frenchman Serge Haroche and American David Wineland have won the 2012 Nobel Prize in physics for inventing and developing methods for observing tiny quantum particles without destroying them.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences cited the two scientists Tuesday “for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems.”

Haroche and Wineland, both 68, work in the field of quantum optics, which deals with the interaction between light and matter.
“Their ground-breaking methods have enabled this field of research to take the very first steps towards building a new type of super fast computer based on quantum physics,” the academy said. “The research has also led to the construction of extremely precise clocks that could become the future basis for a new standard of time.”

Were these two working on the Large Haldron Collider?

So will they please tell us whether the cat is alive for not????????????????????

This thread is sure going well.

LOLOL.
Knock, knock, knock.....Pinkie?!

Knock, knock, knock.....Pinkie?!

Knock, knock, knock.....Pinkie?!

Are you demonstrating your grasp of physics, SMTA?

Waiting patiently......maybe the knocking reference was not caught......could it be?

Who's there?
I mistakenly believed us to be on a Big Bang Theory show tangent here.

Obviously I was wrong. Never mind.

All my pop culture references are aging, alas.

I've never see "The Big Bang".

So that means the American won it. Let's be honest, the Frenchman will just surrender it to us.

No, this is more AMO physics and less HEP.

I suppose later on today, there'll be an article that goes into what it is these guys have done.

Meanwhile, the crib notes, please?

That show is racist against nerds.

Essentially, these were measurements of quantum systems which did not collapse the envelope. When taking measurements of quantum systems, the measurement itself typically changes the system; nominally referred to as collapsing the wavefunction. The two men whom earned the Nobel Prize had developed techniques to probe the quantum state of a system without collapsing the wavefunction. One did it through control of ions and scattering light, the other by control of photons.

I haven't read any of their papers, but I'm thinking that I should. It seems rather interesting.

We'll all be dead soon. There're gonna blow us up with that Collider.

Goddamned scientists.

:lamo

Just Europe--so nobody will probably notice for a week or two. ;)

No, I heard it was the entire planet.

Thank God Tom Cruise will be safe on Planet Iamacompleteidijit.

Yeah recreating the Big Bang doesn't sound like it would bode well for us. On the plus side, we will finally be able to stiff the credit card companies and get away with it.
