I've never met an Amish person either. All I know is I'm a fan of super religious people who go and live away from everybody else and have no wish to bother us. Gawd bless 'em.
I grew up in a building with an Orthodox Jewish family who was part of a larger nearby Orthodox Jewish community. They were very nice people who worshiped as they need to, dressed the way they needed to and conducted themselves in a manner prescribed by their beliefs. There was never a problem, in fact I was a very curious boy of about 8 years old and they were very responsive to me and my questions. I learned a great deal about respect, tolerance and acceptance from these people. I became friends with one of their boys and named Joshua. It was a very nice time in my life and I have fond memories. That was years ago the area is still comprised of Orthodox Jews, Catholics etc and has always maintained a peaceful coexistence.
I am better off for living in such a community as I learned many life lessons about differences which has served me well over my lifetime.
BTW I have had experience with the Amish in Pennsylvania. Driving behind the horse drawn carriages was quaint until I had to clean the horse crap from my tires. The goods were of excellent quality and the food was great.
