Blasphemy or democracy? Egypt cleric tears up, burns New Testament at US Embassy - World News

Shall we start burning Egyptian embassies, and consulates? Shall we riot over this?

So, if I am understanding this correctly, a Muslim burns New Testaments, and get charged with blasphemy. Is it just me, or does this make no sense?

He's a hypocrite, but if we want freedom we need to allow freedom.

No we will not... because we are civilized.

Its both. Its blasphemy and democracy..

Shall we start burning Egyptian embassies, and consulates? Shall we riot over this?

I, personally, shall glimpse upon his thread.

You're welcome.

I don't understand the point of threads like this. If you're trying to do cultural comparisons, then there are much more fruitful ways to go about that than asking condescending questions and declaring your superiority over others. I just don't get it. What's the end game?

This is not the first time in Egypt. A blogger was sentenced to three years for portraying both Islam and Christianity in a negative light.

"Blogger Albert Saber Ayyad was referred on Monday to the Marg Misdemeanor Court on charges of defamation of religion. His trial is set to begin on Wednesday. Ayyad is accused of defaming Islam and Christianity and mocking religious beliefs, rituals and figures. The prosecution alleges that the defendant "promoted his extremist thoughts in speech and writings by creating web pages, including [the] 'Crazy dictator' and 'Egyptian atheists' [pages]."

The end game? Why what ever do you mean? I am not being condescending at all, I am saying that when considering how we approach the backward ass radicals in the ME, we need to weigh very carefully what considerations we place on our own outrage. IOW, why should we let them get away with their hypocrisy?

I for one have had it up to my finely chiseled cheek bones with this America is always offensive ****! It's about time we started letting those assholes know that they are more offensive than we could ever hope to be.

Isn't that cute... Defamation of religious beliefs... His sentence was clearly for crimes against Islam, not Christianity.... Just ask the Coptic Christians....

Calling them or anyone an "asshole" is a great way to start...

Thier legal system needs to revamped if they want to take part in the world scene. This law is archaic and does not jibe with the democratic values they claim to be striving for.

So the end game is to "stick it to them" in a sense. Well, I don't really see much benefit in doing that. First, it seems that everyone who tries to do that ends up dead or catalyzing riots that end in other people being dead. Second, the radicals and extremists in the ME just like the radicals and extremists in the United States are irrational as are the people in the ME or elsewhere who generalize about Americans. Therefore, "letting these assholes" know how we perceive them isn't going to do much in the way of progress.

That said, I admit that I laughed at "finely chiseled cheekbones."

I lol'd!!

Let's just get rid of that pesky 1st amendment thing... it's so bothersome.

Second, the radicals and extremists in the ME just like the radicals and extremists in the United States are irrational

Which radicals and extremists in the US stone women to death for being raped? Or behead people that don't believe as they do? I must have missed an MSNBC news story on all of that.

IMHO all of it is silly as hell. One guy burns a religious book and another burns a religious book in retaliation. The good people in between are just doing all they can to distance themselves from the nutters on both sides.

Don't respond to comments that you don't understand.

Burn a book? It's cheaper to make a 15 minute film for youtube.

Noted: You refuse to answer the question, and instead divert with a personal attack. Classy.
Your posts are not worthy of a diversion.

If you do not care to back up your words, well, that reflects on nobody but yourself. I'm not here for a chest thumping competition, I asked you some questions, if you do not care to answer, then fine. It reflects upon yourself, no matter how much you try to divert with personal attacks.

Yes, but it's not my religion, so I don't care. I'm just in it for the general hooliganism and chaos. Plus there's all kinds of **** to be scored during the confusion of a riot. First stop is the liquor store. Then Sears for a belt sander and a drill press. Maybe a lathe. I never used one before, but it sounds fancy, and therefore I ****ing need it.
