Egypt's president wants more independence from US

If by "more independence", I wonder if he also means less monetary aid?

Color me skeptical, but somehow I doubt it.

He's a politician. What voting population doesn't want their sovereignty defended? At the end of the day actions matter. Like Obama said they are neither an ally or enemy. Cutting off add for a fledgling democracy is horrible policy though.

This is an understandable sentiment from the leader of a country. I wish we were more independent from other countries that finance our debt.

Maybe we could just cut out the middleman and have China give money to Egypt.

Their country, their choice.

...just wow....

You can still purchase what I described at below market price. That is exploitation.

Where does it say that I must be dependent upon a country to be exploiting them?

Do the states a favor and don't vote.

How do we exploit a country that A) we give billions of dollars in aid to, and B) sells us stuff we don't need? I think you are so hung up on the "big bad America" exploiting the poor third world country that you are unwilling to be confused by facts.

The US was downgraded again a few days ago. and China stopped lending money some time ago.

The US is now just printing money which will possibly lead to a collapse in the dollar, a bad thing for everyone.

Come now, certainly not everyone.

The point of his message wasn't that we agree with Arab culture, merely that we don't force our beliefs onto them. That's called respect. Don't put sanctions on a country to force them to stop them from beating their women (if that's their culture). Instead, if you don't agree, just don't do business with them. Pretty simple.

I disagree with your perception of what they want. If you don't "respect" their culture you risk being killed. I do agree that if they want to beat the women and kill their children that's their business but I will do nothing to help them.

On the other hand, liberals are big on universal human rights and the enforcement of the same.

Can't have it both ways.
