Controversial 'Piss Christ' art back in NY

LOL

I thought briefly about playing off my stupidity as a joke - but decided to just own up to it. Obviously I've just been puzzled by the 'piss christ' and never realized it was just a photo.

Well damn - i always thought it was THE jar of piss with the pic . . . and it always stumped me as to how it wasn't a health code violation. LOL

So - if I can have this false assumption (because obviously I developed and opinion about it a long time ago and have never read a single article since then on the subject) then just how many other people are like me - stupid and thinking it's actually the jar of piss?

I bet you I'm not the only one.

But now I know - now my educationed is rounded out quite nicely.

It's okay. Most people in non artist circles tend to think it's literally a statue of Christ in a jar of piss at the exhibit. I seriously doubt that the artist took the picture of Christ in an actual jar containing piss. He probably used water with some food colouring. Bodily fluids/body parts don't really lend themselves well to art exhibits unless highly processed or faked and they're just unnecessarily messy for a photograph.

well... he was raised as a Muslim... and even his second name is Hussein.

If it walks like a duck.....

He was not. Like him hate him who cares, but, get the facts right.

"The Audacity of Hope, Barack Obama writes:

I was not raised in a religious household. For my mother, organized religion too often dressed up closed-mindedness in the garb of piety, cruelty and oppression in the cloak of righteousness. However, in her mind, a working knowledge of the world's great religions was a necessary part of any well-rounded education. In our household the Bible, the Koran, and the Bhagavad Gita sat on the shelf alongside books of Greek and Norse and African mythology.

On Easter or Christmas Day my mother might drag me to church, just as she dragged me to the Buddhist temple, the Chinese New Year celebration, the Shinto shrine, and ancient Hawaiian burial sites. In sum, my mother viewed religion through the eyes of the anthropologist; it was a phenomenon to be treated with a suitable respect, but with a suitable detachment as well."

"As a child in Indonesia, Obama studied for two years at one Muslim school and then two years at a Catholic school. In both places he experienced religious indoctrination, but in neither case did the indoctrination take hold: during Quranic studies he made faces and during Catholic prayers he would look around the room. Eventually, Barack Obama abandoned this non-conformism and skepticism to be baptized as an adult in the Trinity United Church of Christ."

Barack Obama's Religious Beliefs & Background: What Does Barack Obama Believe?

American Presidents have to keep up appearances .... or you believe all you see out there

Mya.

You've officially gone off the...

Do you honestly expect the American gov to say " yeh sorry but we defend our free speech so the rest of you can jog on"?.
Its a international incident and America has many interests in the ME both financial and military, you honestly want them to throw that away to defend some guys moronic video? The American gov spoke out against the attacks and have vowed to bring those responsible to justice while at the same time have distanced themselves from the video. Would you prefer they took credit for the video?

To the bolded: Yes. I expect him to say that. I'm sorry, but their getting their panties in a wad over something that someone here does, as a private citizen, that they dont like, is infantile behavior, and we owe them no explanations.

yeh and I guess the massive troop surge in Afghan, increase of drone strikes and the death of Bin Laden was all part of his evil plan.

Obama is the first Muslim American President ever.

He's obviously not, but whenever this gets raised the implication is that there is something wrong with being an Arab-American or a Muslim.

Is there something wrong with being a muslim in the US?

I honestly dont know what world some posters on here live on!

I have to agree. I don't see what else they can do without making matters worse. And I don't think it says or does anything to free speech. They have to use finesse in an international incident like this. As long as they do try to get some of the people who were truly responsible for the killings.

but your an isolationist so you would say that, America however is not.

This what I would have liked to see. A very hands off, but, firm discourse and no more.

Prepare for this type of response: I'm xenophobic/racist. I'll say xenophobic/racist things but don't call me xenophobic/racist I'll complain that you're calling me xenophobic/racist.

I doubt you will find many Americans who would not agree on this specific issue. The people who are losing their mind in blind rage, over a freaking film, are acting infantile.

Not at all. There are many peace loving Muslims everywhere.

Only when religious fanaticism takes over some of these people ... it's particularly virulent.

That's not what she asked you. You claimed Obama was a Muslim. Now, say for arguments' sake you were right. So the **** what if he was?

Where is the outrage from the Obama Administration? Nowhere.

Only when radical Islam is offended comes the flood of apologies. That's Obama's way, but everybody knows that by now, so it's no surprise really.

This piece of...whatever it is has existed since 1987. Where was Bush's outrage? Will Romney be appropriately outraged by a quarter century old artwork?

Is your name Serenity?

If not shut up please.

Only racists call people racist.

Can't argue with THAT fact.

It always made me think of Warhol's Oxidation comment about wondering why it didn't turned green and sometimes black.

no most people agree that the reaction to the video was stupid but most sane people realise that the American Gov acted in the correct manner. Distance yourself from the video is the right call all day long.

There's nothing at all wrong with it, and if you'll note, the Muslims living here aren't acting like animals over this issue.

I read that he actually did, and that he has made "art" in other bodily fluids such as blood and semen too.

To be honest, he's a photographer. He doesn't really make art in the classical sense of the word. He captures specific moments and that is what is considered the art. He doesn't literally exhibit blood and semen in an art gallery. He takes a picture of it that is meant to capture reaction. I'd understand far more if people were disgusted by him literally grabbing a jar of piss sticking a cross in it and that being shown at a museum. However, that's not the case. They're photographs meant to make people think. Not the literal objects being sold at galleries.
