France to close embassies in fear of cartoon backlash

We've been trying to explain Brit humor for a long time. Perhaps if the radicals saw Monty, Benny and some stuff like that then they'd just shake their head as well.

One must HAVE a sense of humor before understanding it.

Closing embassies due to security threats is the standard operating procedure for MANY countries, including (in some cases) the United States. If France expects trouble to erupt there, why WOULDN'T they close it? Diplomats and office workers are not soldiers.

I like some of the Brit humor. I try to catch Last of the Summer Wine when it comes on. It is always good for a laugh or two right before bed. Certainly a lot better than most of what the main networks put on as humor nowdays.

I remember a department store show that was totally wacked out.

It's not such a big surprise that they close them. It's the reason why they must close them that's ludicrous.

"Are You Being Served", in OKC, it comes on PBS, 10pm Sunday night. In east Texas, we actually get PBS from Louisiana, I know it comes on, but after the last telethon to raise money, I don't know the current schedule for it. Check you local PBS listings, it may still be broadcast in your area.

I just wish they would run Faulty Towers.

Red Dwarf for me.

muslim activists in Europe are the kings of welfare, special privilege and victimization. There is no middle ground with them. And they keep pushing and pushing... and for fear of being called "racists" the people suffer.

Sounds like there's no middle ground with you.

A security threat isn't a good enough reason? I don't think the motive for those threatening the embassy's security really changes the fact that the threat DOES exist. IMO France is just doing what any responsible government would do during a security threat.

If you mean that the reason for the threat itself is ridiculous, I agree. But generally there isn't much point in trying to figure out the motives of an angry mob. I suspect that it has less to do with an offensive cartoon or movie, and more to do with a general sense that Western nations have oppressed the Muslim world.

I'm referring to the latter. An angry mob over a cartoon seems ridiculous to me. Personally, I doubt the mob is motivated so much by oppression as they are by militant Imams insuring they stay angry.

No middle ground? Dude.

Europeans and their governments have been giving ground CONSTANTLY. There is no middle ground if the other side is not willing to give ground too. And they have proven that they aren't. There is only islamic law. No compromise can be made there. No understanding.

There are thousands of arabs who come in Europe and then flee islamic culture and islam itself. They integrate as best as they can. Yet they need to go in protection programs. And there are dozens of groups who provide such programs... by programs I mean. They help him relocate somewhere else in the country or make sure he gets a new ID. Not provide round the clock protection. Why? because there are people who will kill other people who renounce islam. Just like there have begun for the past 10 years to exist honor killings in Europe. Honor killings... seriously? After Europe has been free of such murders for centuries, they are brought back as something out of the XIIth century.

So there are Muslims and Arabs that believe there's room for compromise? Good, because that's not what what I quoted was implying.
