A bomb threat has forced the evacuation of all buildings on the University of Texas campus in Austin.
According to Rhonda Weldon, communications director for the University's Operations office, "At 8:35 a.m. the university received a call from a male with a middle eastern accent claiming to have placed bombs all over campus. He said he was with Al Qaeda and these bombs would go off in 90 minutes. President Powers was notified and it was decided to evacuate all of the buildings out of an abundance of caution."

North Dakota State also received similar threats and evacuated their campus.

I never got the logic behind bomb threats, either it's some jackass on campus thinking he's a funny bugger, or it's some dude in the Middle East trying to cause a ruckus.

Either way you still have to take the precautions that were taken in this case, but 99.9% of the time it's a pretty clear sign there is no bombs.

If you really wanted to bomb a place... wouldn't exactly warn people about it would you?

Edit: In South Africa as a child our school received several bomb threats a year... every single time it turned out to be one of our students who had said it.

I hope all are safe and this was only a hoax perpetrated by morons.

Re: Campus Threads Evacuate all Buildings on UT Austin Campus

The shear dynamics of an evacuation are dumbfounding. UT Austin, as of 2008, had over 50k students enrolled, and the grounds are not only huge, but pretty closely positioned to several major businesses.

I've never understood it either Jet. As an elementary school student in Los Angeles, I spent a couple long days on the black top waiting as my school was searched for bombs. It sucked and later I thought, what did the guy who did it, get out of it. I guess just jollies from stirring up the kids, staff and police.

A bomb threat was posted on the door of one of my kid's schools and then the next day a call to that one and another close by were phoned in. That really pissed me off. I wasn't allowed to get my child. The parent club donated cameras for the doorways and a sheriff was assigned to guard, patrol and be a presence in both schools. They also instituted drills for the school district in case of a sniper, since one of the threats included shooting kids.

Again, what does anyone get out of threatening kids?

They apparently have the mindset of a potty training toddler. It's their version of "look mom, I went potty", even if they haven't.

People are screwed up... Some more than others.

Bottom line, that is the sad truth.

Re: Campus Threads Evacuate all Buildings on UT Austin Campus

There is a school very close to mine where a student faked a bomb threat during final exams because they wanted more time to study. They instead got arrested.

Re: Campus Threads Evacuate all Buildings on UT Austin Campus

Why do it on a Friday when there is no school?

Or someone trying to get out of a test.

Either they go threaten with a bomb or BOMB the test.

Awesome, though that's a pretty desperate act to avoid a test. LOL

My school and that school are very intense rivals. We view them as a school for rich hippie kids. Needless to say there was much gossip on our campus about the incident. It is desperate, but it is also selfish. They canceled finals that day and had to reschedule them so some individuals had more tests than they anticipated on one day. For some they had to stay at school an extra day and delay traveling back to see their families.

That was more than desperate, how incredibly selfish of him. There are sometimes more than one consequence to an act. I didn't consider it was finals. That was terrible impact to some kids. At the least they know he got caught and punished.

Maybe someone from OU that didn't want the Longhorns to practice.

Re: Campus Threads Evacuate all Buildings on UT Austin Campus

yea, some desperate person was not prepared to take a test/submit an assignment and made sure he had until monday to get ready
happened all the time in my high school ... in 1965

Re: Campus Threads Evacuate all Buildings on UT Austin Campus

So far it's just some guy with a phone who claims he's Al Qaeda.

Re: Campus Threads Evacuate all Buildings on UT Austin Campus

The colleges around me have classes on Friday. In any case, the answer is, if that were the case, a moron and thank God if there weren't classes.

I won't quibble about the lack of potential victims.

Re: Campus Threads Evacuate all Buildings on UT Austin Campus

The only thing I can come with as to who would do something like this is a person who is an inept, ineffectual coward in real life. There is not courage or glory in making a threat through a means of communication where no one can see who the person is. This does not appear to have been for a purpose like a diversion to accomplish another goal. In any case a "problemed" individual.

Re: Campus Threads Evacuate all Buildings on UT Austin Campus

I beg to differ. Most classes are not on Friday. So yeah. Take that!

If one person was injured, let alone killed, as a result of this nonsense that is too high a price. What do you think?

Re: Campus Threads Evacuate all Buildings on UT Austin Campus

Well, it looks like my neighbor university went back to operations now.

It would have been a tragedy.
