Ship Commander Fired After Harassment Claims

It's totally accurate. If it weren't, sexual harassment in the military wouldn't be the significant, chronic problem that it is.

I might add there is a zero tolerance for it so if someone is accused he is guilty until proven innocent............

dumbya wanted to continue the war in Iraq for 6 years. The people did not. Dictatorship 101.

Then the people could have ejected him from office forcibly or had him blocked through their elected representatives. If people are not willing to do what it takes, they don't care that much about what happens.

Some of us have served and have actual experience on this. Notice for example the stat NP is misusing, 22 out of 1500 commanders relieved. That is 1.5 % relieved for some reason, not harassment. The number for harassment is probably under 1 %, in fact, probably well under 1 %.

In the military, you go to frequent training on this very subject. It is long, it is boring, and it is mandatory. When you have as many people as the military has however, some are going to be rule breakers. This was true before women could serve, will be true forever. Some will do drugs, some will drink on duty, some can't show up on time, some go AWOL(or UA), some get in fights, some create racial incidents. Do you think, since those are all "significant, chronic problems", that the military and government does not care?

The rate of sexual harassment in the US military is significantly higher than in any civilian workplace environment.

That alone is evidence that the government doesn't care, but the government's indifference is not surprising; the CINC, pols and the CEOs that own them have no incentive to care.

I might add there is a zero tolerance for it so if someone is accused he is guilty until proven innocent............

And nothing will happen to him as long he's a goody-goody for the establishment.

The dude mentioned in the OP screwed up in some other way. Sexual harassment is just an excuse the military uses to get rid of wayward officers that don't get with the program.

Almost, except the US is a plutocracy whereas Iran is a theocracy.

In the US, the President takes orders from Exxon, Goldman Sachs, Alcoa, etc., and in Iran, the President takes orders from the Supreme Leader.

Ok, so this is about equating the two. Now at least I understand.

How do you feel about Hamas?

Full-on CT probably helps too.

That proves my point.

I might add its a whole different ball game between a bird farm and a destroyer.......On a carrier it like a city......You have plenty of room for the crew and all the conveniences of home.........On a destroyer you have none of that....You work in very close quarters.........

From the picture in the OP, this guy doesn't look all that young. And he's the ship's commander, not some random enlisted guy. I've never been in the Navy so I don't know how much hanky-panky goes on on the ships, but in any case there's a distinction between flirting (or even consensual sex) and unwanted advances. It seems like this guy was fired for sexual harassment.

I wasnt talking about the commander...I was talking sailors in general...the commander deserves whatever he gets for his lack of control

You got that right......The average age of a Navy Enlisted is 19.........At that age the juices flow in both sexes and being aboard a Navy ship for long periods of time does not help the situation.......The solution is simple...move the women ashore......most of them don't want to be on a ship anyhow....

I agree with you on this one NP....see your not always wrong lol

You have never been on a carrier at sea have you? 6k people makes it actually more crowded than smaller ships.

If you talk to any officer that is not a Mustang they will tell you that women serving on combatants ships is working fine and that is the politically correct thing to say and they are worried about their naval careers but off the record it a whole different ball game...........

Yes I have I although not a member of the crew as and E6 I was TAD to the uss Lexington (CVT-16) I actually had my own stateroom while aboard ........

Trust me, floating city gives entirely the wrong impression. My second cruise we had 180 people in one berthing.

This is the kind of thing that happens when you allow women to serve aboard a Navy combatant.........The Navy should not be used for social experimentation.....It is there to fight our wars..........We have enough problems already without mixing the sexes......If they have to serve at sea then put them on all female ships.........

NORFOLK, Va. - The commanding officer of a Florida-based warship was removed from the post during an overseas deployment after several female crew members alleged that he sexually harassed women aboard ship, a Navy report shows.
Cmdr. Derick Armstrong was relieved of command in May, about six months after his promotion to the top job aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans. Of the 1,500 commanding officers in the Navy, 22 were removed from the job last year for various reasons

Yeah, bring back the old days of rum, buggery and the lash. The Old Salt Navy:

You know what...you should try spending some time at sea before denigrating those that have.

It was a joke directed at NP about the suggestion that being at to sea for long periods of time is an excuse for sexual harassment

Understand something...those of us who spent time in the navy...we hate that song almost universally, and that "joke" is so old and tired we are ready to shoot people over it.

There should be zero Commanding Officers getting involved in this kind of nonsense.
firing the guy in the OP is a sign that the USN agrees with you. COs shouldn't be involved in those kinds of shenanigans.

I blame both sexes my far out left wing friend............It takes 2 to tango........
So when a gay guy makes comments about how look good and how he'd like to fill you up from behind, you were one of the two tangoing? I did not know that about you.

Your problem is my left wing friend this is not a joking issue......You wouldn't know that because you really have no clue as to what goes on aboard a Navy ship at sea for a long time.............

As far as comparing the comforts of a destroyer vs thoase of a bird farm on the first ship I was on we had 2 heads for the crew (300 men) with 2 showers and 3 commodes in each head.........The berthing compartment was on the 2nd deck so to get to the head you had to go through 2 compartments nd then up a ladder to the main deck where the heads were.......We might have a mail call once every 2 weeks........There were no computers or phones to call home like there are on carriers......The berthing compartment for over 100 men was about as big as you living room.........

This thread is not about gays.....Please don't try and hijack it.........You have been around here to know better then that.........

How about males treating women with respect, and not sexually harassing them?
I know it's hard to control yourselves, but I would assume that being a commander would require him being an adult.

Well that's just crazy talk. Obviously it's the fault of the women for... being present, er... or something. Yeah. Totally their fault.

I thought we were talking about sexual harassment. You said it took two people to engage in sexual harassment.
If you were sexually harassed by a gay guy that would mean that you were participating.

I don't know how you figure that but no one should be sexually harrassed..............They did discharge a lot of gays for sexually harrasing straight guys.....I was never harrassed but I was involved in several court martial that kicked Gays out for doing it.

I think I got a pretty good idea (eating, sleeping, working, etc). But that statement is rather foreboding, so I'm not sure.

I was involved in several court martial that kicked Gays out for doing it.

Why did you capitalize 'gays'.

So if it's a man and a woman, then sexual harassment "takes two to tango."
But if it's a man and a man, then there's just one guilty party?
