Ship Commander Fired After Harassment Claims

Hes a man isnt he ? Im not condoning or defending what he did...I am stating that I believe NP is right this time...you put young men and women in close proximity of each other 24/7 for long periods with no other outlet....its human nature....

From the picture in the OP, this guy doesn't look all that young. And he's the ship's commander, not some random enlisted guy. I've never been in the Navy so I don't know how much hanky-panky goes on on the ships, but in any case there's a distinction between flirting (or even consensual sex) and unwanted advances. It seems like this guy was fired for sexual harassment.

You know zero about life aboard a Navy Combatant that spends up to 90 days at sea.............

I've gone longer than 90 days without getting laid, and I've never in my life sexually harassed someone. If someone can't control themselves and obey the military's rules, then they shouldn't be in the military in the first place. By the way, the implication in your post is that this kind of behavior is NORMAL when you're out at sea...are you sure you aren't just projecting your own faults onto the rest of the navy?

With the slop they serve aboard military ships, I can understand this. :naughty

Have you ever even eaten aboard a Navy Combatant? I did, 6 of them.......The chow is not bad...........

Its not always just the mans fault but if the women are not there then the problem is eliminated.

If the sexual harassers are not there, then the problem is eliminated too.

Just a poor weak man...

for the junior ranks, 19 to 21 year olds perhaps you can hold your mouth just right to say what you think. But thinking in NP's day the lustful juices still flowed, just as same sex, sex.

Howsomeever this is the COMMANDING Officer. Not some young guy with more spunk than think. The Commander gets to wear the CO hat because he is supposed to be a cool, rational, even keeled sort, not a hormone driven teenager. He commands a guided missile warship, not lube boss at Orgies R Us.

I see this as yet another NP moment. Nothing like his claim of sexes can't work together in close quarters- that would be if his ship ran aground because the Bridge crew was having a pot stoked orgy, or if the messhall was used routinely for daisy chain sex marathons...

No it was a failure in leadership, as THE Commander on a US warship- your subordinates are not your drinking buddies to play grab ass with. A few can't see past sex, it is their holy Grail. I see an Officer who exercised extremely poor judgement so that in combat and most importantly the hazy, combat ready, trigger ready alerts in highly volatile areas of operation... he MUST exercise cool, precise and rock steady command.

Women didn't do this to him, he did it to himself.

You know this how ?......theres a big difference between going to work with people than living with them 24/7 out at sea where there are no spouses..
Men will be men no matter how many laws you right or how much indignant outrage you show....I agree with navy pride on this one...women and men should not be forced upon each other in such close quarters for long lengths of time....human nature dictates ****s gonna happen...

You got that right......The average age of a Navy Enlisted is 19.........At that age the juices flow in both sexes and being aboard a Navy ship for long periods of time does not help the situation.......The solution is simple...move the women ashore......most of them don't want to be on a ship anyhow....

i know someone like you would find it hard to believe....but the vast majority of young men and women ARE able to control their hormones at the age of 19. Most think with their big head, not the little one...despite your personal experience.

Gotta disagree with you. The solution is to require men (and women) to act like grown ups.

That is very easy for you to say.......The 22 men relieved were Commnding Officers......Imagine how many cases of enlisted are not publicized.......There are hundreds......Living and working on a Navy Destroyer is a very dangerous job......Its not like a bird farm which is like living in a city with all the comforts of home and most of the time you don't even know your underway...You don't need another distraction...

You haven't served nor been stationed on a Navy ship.......You know nothing about what goes on behind closed doors.

I notice you have no star. Two questions:

1. Have you ever served in the military?

2. Have you ever eaten aboard a US Military Ship?

If both answers are NO (which something tells me they are) then I suggest you grow up before posting this kind of tripe.

I on the other hand do have first hand experience, and you are still blaming the victim.

Its not always just the mans fault but if the women are not there then the problem is eliminated.

It is always the fault of the person who chose to harass others.

This guy was not 19. You can tell from your OP. Care to try again?

Let me quote your story NP:

Of the 1,500 commanding officers in the Navy, 22 were removed from the job last year for various reasons

See that bolded part. That means that sexual harassment was not the only reason for those 22, in fact, it may only be the 1 guy.

22 out of 1,500 and were all 22 relived for harassing just women? A whole whopping 1.4% of commanders. I dunno NP, it sounds like you are doing the twist again, trying to use 19 years olds as the equiv of the Commander of a US warship in terms of maturity and judgement. If that were the case we can close down Annapolis and have the kids running the ship!

You haven't served nor been stationed on a Navy ship.......You know nothing about what goes on behind closed doors.

So you're in close quarters with the opposite sex for many weeks at a time. Big ****ing deal, the navy isn't the only job in the world like that. You aren't a unique snowflake who has some special right to sexually harass others just because you were in the military, NP. I've worked in close quarters with attractive women for 16+ waking hours a day, and it's never once crossed my mind to sexually harass them. If you can't control yourself, then you can and should be fired. That goes for civilian and military jobs alike.

This is the kind of thing that happens when you allow women to serve aboard a Navy combatant.........The Navy should not be used for social experimentation.....It is there to fight our wars..........We have enough problems already without mixing the sexes......If they have to serve at sea then put them on all female ships.........

Navy Pride blames women for sexual harrassment. Wonderful.

I just retired this year, NP, I know first hand.

I think we know

I understand that spending a long time at sea can cause men to get lonely for physical contact

NORFOLK, Va. - The commanding officer of a Florida-based warship was removed from the post during an overseas deployment after several female crew members alleged that he sexually harassed women aboard ship, a Navy report shows.
Cmdr. Derick Armstrong was relieved of command in May, about six months after his promotion to the top job aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans. Of the 1,500 commanding officers in the Navy, 22 were removed from the job last year for various reasons

Its the woman's fault for being too feminine to make it impossible for me to control myself!

Some man you are dude.

You know what...you should try spending some time at sea before denigrating those that have.

Dearest Wicked Weasel,

I humbly bow in apology for offending you with the "grow up". I am so very, very, very sorry that you were offended. I know you are a grown up and know exactly that of which you speak.

Having said that, The two questions remain. Pretty please with sugar and honey ... answer them for me so that I might better understand your post.

Good thing the guy wasn't responsible for his own actions. I know the Navy frowns on accepting personal responsibility for one's own actions. Accepting responsibility for your own actions is a liberal commie thing.
