Valedictorian denied high school diploma for saying hell in speech

Nobody is laughing. It is hard not to sink into utter despair when ostensibly mature adults go to such absurd lengths to defend and make excuses for a child's petulant disobedience. The lack of basic morals is disgusting.

Definitely a Method Poster (similar to Method Actor).

He's too consistent to be an ACTUAL nutjob. No...this is like Sean Penn staying in character all day between takes on the set of Fast Times At Ridgemont High.

Much like Stephen Colbert...he does a better job at being what he satires than the targets of his satire do. (Colbert is better at being O'Reilly than O'Reilly).

If you think I'm making some ironic commentary in support of the disobedient child you couldn't be more mistaken. I don't think you've read my posts very carefully. You're right, I am too consistent to be nuts. I know exactly what I am saying. This disobedient child broke the rules and refused to apologize, and here we have adults everywhere coming out of the woodwork to defend the bad behavior, as though she should get a pass for braking he rules withot so much as an apology? What the hell kind of lesson is that for children?

Yeah but then you aren't 18 any longer.

I like vampire books and True Blood on HBO is one of my favourite shows but Twilight - eh.

I was a senior in high school when that first got big, I tired to get into it since a lot of my friends liked it, but my good tastes got in the way.

Sometimes rules need to be broken. A little disobedience goes a long way to ensuring that people don't become over-compliant with any relation to authority and take a skeptical perspective with established methods of social conduct.

I'd say the young lady is doing just fine in that regard. I do like JTs letter though it seemed rather appropriate. ;)

A little defiance now and again keeps the jackasses of the world honest. They should never really know if your going to remove their head. They should be kept nervous of that possibilty. It makes dealing with them infinately easier. After all they like their heads. A little fear goes a long ways. ;)

The jackass in this situation is the disobedient child who refused to apologize for bad behavior. So to that extent, I agree with you, the right thing to do is withhold the diploma until an apology is made. A little fear goes a long way.

Why on earth would anyone take the side of the disobedient child in this dispute?

One, she's 18, not a child. Two, why on earth would anyone take the side of anyone other than the young woman in question?

Besides, it doesn't matter anyway. The diploma is just a piece of paper, it's worthless. My high school withheld mine and it didn't hurt me any.

Just read another article on the story. Particularly this quote.

Nootbaar said the diploma was on the principal's desk.

"He said right here's your diploma and you're not going to get it," and then told her she would have to write a letter of apology, Nootbar said.

I'd have just grabbed it and walked out.

She as far as I am concerned is an adult exercising adult perogitive. They did not have to have her speak. As far as I am concerend the principal is the jackass. The comment in the speach was appropriate for the message she was trying to convey. None of the speach was outragous or provocitive in any way. She said and did NOTHING inappropriate. The ONLY person being inappropriate is the principle. She should stand her ground like the woman she is. And yes she is acting like a woman, a full growed honest to god woman. Not some meek little girl. Women with a set on them are hard to find. A lot of the socalled women today are bunch weak willed knock kneed little girly bitches. Obviously her parents raised her right.:smash: She's not putting up with the BS from the principle, good for her. Kick their ass lady.

As I said earlier in the thread, if you consider the student in question to be an adult it just makes it that much worse. Whether she is and adult or a child is not really the issue, her behavior is that of a child, just as is the behavior of those who defend her.
Why on earth would anybody defend a petulant child, or a petulant adult, for refusing to apologize for breaking rules while representing the school at an official function. It is indefensible. Only the most asinine, immature arguments have been made to defend this persons puerile actions. Nobody with any ounce of common sense or maturity would side with this valedictorian.

I'm totally at a loss here as to why people are defending this kid. She was giving a speech (based on some stupid vampire movie no less), and she cursed on stage in front of everybody's family members, grandmothers, grandfathers, parents, small children. All she had to do was say she was sorry. End of story. Everybody's happy. :) I just don't get it.

This is what I see when I think about this story.

NO! I won't apologize!!! Waaa!

WE dont need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teacher ...leave those kids alone!

All in all your just another brick in the wall

Why should she say she's sorry if she isn't? Are you encouraging her to lie? Surely, that's a guaranteed trip to that place she's not allowed to mention!:lamo

Nice pun! I think she should say sorry because it would be the right thing to do.

No - I'm questioning her maturity. Age-wise: woman . . . maturity wise: a snippity teen who couldn't come up with an original, meaningful speech. Whatever happened to her 4.00 and why couldn't she put her SELF into her speech?

I admit I'm a huge fan of Twilight - but it's just entertainment and it shouldn't find its way into serious reality, EVER. It's a book - it's a movie - that's it. It in itself is not life-inspiring.

Ever quote a good line out of a movie, even a bad one?

She might not want to back down as a matter of principle, but remember, far from being a bully, the principal is her PAL.

Right, because adults NEVER make mistakes.

No, it isn't. The rule was idiotic in the first place, and she didn't break it on purpose. She's done nothing that deserves an apology for, and I have a ton of respect for her for not folding and giving one anyway.

Only the most asinine, immature arguments have been made to defend this persons puerile actions.

Someone's sure making good use of their word a day calendar. Perhaps people are only making asinine, immature arguments because the principal's actions were so asinine and immature. "Oh no! She said a naughty word".

Here's some well-reasoned, mature arguments for you.

1. As far as I can tell from the articles I've read, she didn't even break a rule, she simply offended the principal personally.
2. The comment obviously wasn't considered offensive by most of the people there, since they laughed about it.
3. The 'offense' she committed was so mild that no reasonable person could possibly be offended by it.
4. The principal is essentially blackmailing her to try to get what he wants. The father is absolutely accurate when he calls it bullying.
5. It's especially idiotic that the principal is offended when he teaches at a school whose mascot is a devil.

Nobody with any ounce of common sense or maturity would side with this valedictorian.

Clearly untrue. I'm a mature, sensible person, and side with the valedictorian. Therefore your statement is false.

With friends like that who needs enemies.
