Valedictorian denied high school diploma for saying hell in speech

Do you guys think the responses would be a bit different if she said the "F" word instead?

Probably. Since she would be using Uncle Joe's 'f-bomb' ... they'd think she was a Dim, and then joy would return to Mudville.

A L

Well that isn't surprising.

No, what's surprising is that you're making a big deal out of a bunch of noises that came out of some girl's mouth. Do you not understand how ridiculous that is?

Not noises. Words, and words that might be offensive to some people. The girl needs to grow up and learn how to conduct herself in public.

One of the dumbest things I have read in a while. They should have burned her at the stake for her transgression or just issued a tacit admonishment with a wink and a nod. She achievements outweigh a mere mistake and the administration was being onerous and punitive in the demand for an apology. I walked out without my diploma as well screw em.

What should have happened a simple shaking of the finger and you are a naughty girl...

Why does everyone think an apology letter is such a bad thing? It is not that big of a deal to say I'm sorry. Hopefully, this will be a learning experience in her journey towards adulthood.

She will learn that those in authority that blindly adhere to some arbitrary rule are fools. They destroy the spirit of a community and create busy work. My diploma is still stuck in some administrator's butthole, however, just in the pro bono work I have done I have helped more people than any diploma hanging on my wall; let alone the other things I have done with the education I worked so hard for. Very poor judgement on the part of the administration.

 She could have just written the letter of apology. Easy enough.

They should have exercised more discretion. Now they can kiss her butt in Macy's window...:kissass

Mmmm, I think the student should have exercised more discretion. She was aware that profanity is a no-no. She did it anyway and changed a speech that was preapproved without permission. She even admitted that she made a "mistake." But she still refuses to write a simple letter of apology? I think she seems like a spoiled little baby.

No! I won't apologize!!! Waaaah!

No one has a right not to be offended. You need to get the hell over yourself. Try again.

It's amazing how you can be so wrong yet so sure of yourself.

That's a double negative. :2razz: I think you're just angry because you know your argument sucks.

Two things:

Saying HELL is a profanity?

HOW was the student to know that HELL was considered a profanity by the principle, not the audience they laughed, when there was no school rule against saying the word.

Way back in this thread, I posted a link to the student handbook for Prague High School - why don't you find it before you post more nonsense.

1. "Hell" is a profanity and has been since time immemorial. It is a profane word.

2. It is clear that the handbook is not an exhaustive list of all rules. Profanity is against the rules in every school.

Profanity: - Abusive, vulgar, or irreverent language.

So you are saying that every preacher who uses the word "hell" is speaking in a profane manner?

The student handbook is quite exhaustive, yet for some reason you have fixated on this notion that a single word uttered during a high school graduation speech, a word which caused no uproar at the time of speech, is somehow a violation of some unwritten rule, a rule of which you have zero personal knowledge. Yet, you have determined Ms Nootbaar broke a rule, a rule that was never promulgated before she spoke - all of this based on nothing more than your personal opinion.

You do know that the young lady has already started her college studies - don't you? The failure to present to her the graduation diploma, has evidently caused her no academic problems.

That would depend upon how it is used.

The school apparently decided she broke a rule.

Wonderful. I don't recall anyone saying that she should not receive her diploma or that she should not go to college. Only that she could have avoided this situation by apologizing, which is not even a punishment.

I'm sure to some people, when used in a certain way, could construe it as swearing.

Does it really matter? I just think she should have apologized.

Because people are supposed to read minds and just know without being told what particular people consider profanity, even though there is no defined rule in this regard.

They're not interested in reality, they're too busy spouting their own absurd nonsense.

Oh stop complaining already. What's done is done. :) There's no need to be bitter.

Sheesh. If she dropped the N-bomb, used a racial slur or was cussing someone out I can understand the school getting upset. But she used a word that is highly used in casual speaking in a way that doesn't offend normal people.

Consider the fact that the schools team name is "The Fighting Devils"
