Pizza Franchise Creates ‘Not After Dark’ Delivery Rule In Detroit After Driver Shot

Re: Pizza Franchise Creates ‘Not After Dark’ Delivery Rule In Detroit After Driver Sh

I am the Chief of Staff for a Michigan State Representative. We have run two campaigns in the last two years. As part of that campaign we have knocked upon the doors of over 15,000 homes in the city of Detroit.

It is just him and I - neither is armed with anything more than literature and a clipboard.

They're not going to bite the gov't handout that feeds them.

I'm all for not discriminating based on locale but it's a different story when it can cost the life of someone. Dumb ruling.

How about a fifty dollar delivery charge to pay for the armed escort?

This has happened before in Detroit...judge ruled you cant stop delivery in just one neighborhood you have to stop delivery entirely...thats what this chain has done...What a shame it has to come to this...

Has it come to this? Yes it has, according to Joan McKenna, whose son Tim McKenna, 19, was shot while delivering pizza in Detroit. In the wake of the shooting, a Jets Pizza franchise in Dearborn ruled it will no longer deliver to Detroit after dark. Before the shooting, they sent two drivers to every nighttime Detroit delivery, one of whom was armed, Joan McKenna said.
“They usually send somebody with a guy … who carries a gun,” she said. “Usually they have two go into Detroit after dark, if they have a delivery … One guy has a legal, he can carry a gun. That night, Timmy was the only one left, they had this one run to do, he said ‘yeah, I’ll do it.’ He’s a kid, he doesn’t think anything’s going to happen to him.”

Jesus Christ - they should have quit delivering the moment they had to start sending TWO delivery drivers - one armed. . . just to hand over some ****ing food.

Safety wise: since when did working in the food-service industry come with hazard pay?
And business wise: How can they possibly justify the added cost of doubled-employees and extra insurance, etc?

Horrid HORRID business ethics.

I agree but the problem is that delivery is MOST of the business with alot of pizzerias...they cant survive without delivery....some pizza chains have NO seating in their pizzeria its all delivery or take out..

What baloney - or outright cowardice caused by self imposed fear.

I am a 63 year old white guy who is in Detroit a great deal because of my job. I walk the streets and neighborhoods and go to houses that would appear to have you quaking in your soiled boots just thinking about. We just knocked on over 5,000 doors in a four by six mile area and some of it is very poverty stricken. Nobody bothered me. And I am not armed or with a cadre of black guys wearing colors.

And I lived to tell about it.

You did this at night?

Hopefully that pizza chain fights that idiotic ruling. A delivery places should be free to refuse to deliver to any area they feel is dangerous to their employees while still being able to deliver to areas they feel are safe for their employees.

A business should be free to refuse delivery to any area for any reason. You aren't entitled to the restaurant coming to your door step. A while ago there was a rash of pizza boy beatings as well. One may take issue with the "can refuse delivery to any area for any reason" argument, but if it is demonstrably more dangerous, I think that is at the very least rational argument to refuse delivery.

Re: Pizza Franchise Creates ‘Not After Dark’ Delivery Rule In Detroit After Driver Sh

A business should be free to refuse delivery to any area for any reason.
Unless the reason they give is one of the prohibited reasons for refusing someone service, race, etc. they can afaik.
Restaurants reserve the right to refuse service to anyone, iirc. They just can't do it because someone is a member of a protected class.
People who live in a neighborhood where the delivery guy is likely to be shot are not a protected class of people.

Then they should establish their selves elsewhere.

If you cannot or should not meet demand then there is no purpose in the business entity

Back when I lived in Augusta, Georgia I lived between first and 2nd street. They stopped delivering at 2nd street and they wouldn't meet me at the corner of 2nd where I told them I'd walk to to meet them. It was infuriating. Three damn houses away from being delivered to.
