Ecuador's president Rafael Correa has agreed to give Julian Assangeasylum, officials within Ecuador's government have said.
Ecuador's foreign minister Ricardo Patiño indicated that the president would reveal his answer once the Olympic Games were over. But it remains unclear if giving Assange asylum will allow him to leave Britain and fly to Ecuador, or amounts to little more than a symbolic gesture. At the moment he faces the prospect of arrest as soon as he leaves the embassy for breaching his bail conditions.
"For Mr Assange to leave England, he should have a safe pass from the British [government]. Will that be possible? That's an issue we have to take into account," Patino told Reuters on Tuesday.
Government sources in Quito confirmed that despite the outstanding legal issues Correa would grant Assange asylum – a move which would annoy Britain, the US and Sweden. They added that the offer was made to Assange several months ago, well before he sought refuge in the embassy, and following confidential negotiations with senior London embassy staff.

Great move for freedom and transparency on Ecuadors part! Now hopefully Assange can find some safe way to get from GB and to Ecuador!

What the hell is up with the [R.I.P.] tag? Is Assange dead? Do did somebody put a bullet in that scumbag's head? Was he killed in a 'accident'? There is no reason what so ever to use a RIP tag for a living person.

I have no idea why the RIP is on there..

Good. No one should be locking up journalists for the act of journalism. They provide an all-too-important check on tyrannical abuses of government power. It's ridiculous that Assange has had to go through all of this. Every criticism that was levied at him about the potential dangers of the information he published turned out to be false. No troop positions were endangered. No nation's security was endangered. But overconfident governments discovered that they cannot act with impunity. How is this a bad thing? Why does a socialist have to defend checks on government power by a private citizen to conservatives?

a good hit team could intercept that turd..

I can think of dozens of SF guys who would love to get the assignment

He will never be allowed to leave England. It's that simple. It's a purely theatrical move and nothing more. Assange will get what's coming to him, and he's not going to enjoy it. Just like his accomplice here in the US will. Maybe it will help people in the future figure out that State Secrets are supposed to be exactly that.

A little research on Rafael Correae and it doesn't surprise me that he would pull a stunt like this.

"Socialism will continue. The Ecuadorian people voted for that. We are going to emphasize this fight for social justice, for regional justice. We are going to continue the fight to eliminate all forms of workplace exploitation within our socialist conviction: the supremacy of human work over capital. Nobody is in any doubt that our preferential option is for the poorest people, we are here because of them. Hasta la victoria siempre! (Until the eternal victory)"

— Rafael Correa, April 30, 2009[49]

He announced that the country would default on over $3 billion worth of bonds

"Critics charge Correa with running a campaign against the independence of the media.[9][10][11] Among other actions, Correa brought a libel case against the newspaper El Universo and won damages of $40 million, confirmed by the National Court of Justice (Ecuador's highest court) as of 16 February 2012. The court also confirmed three-year prison sentences against a journalist and three executives of the newspaper"

"During Rafael Correa's tenure as presidency he took some radical alternative steps to change the course of Ecuador's relations with the rest of the world. Amongst these were economic moves to correct Ecuador's debt imbalance, a distancing from the United States, a rift with its northern neighbour Colombia, and a strengthening of ties with ALBA (including Venezuela and Bolivia), as well as Iran."

Yes. Retarded attitudes like this is exactly why people like Assange are important.

Hate to break it to you champ, but Governments are supposed to abide by the law too. Things like Wikileaks help to remind them of that.

You're the one who made the thread. The purpose of the [RIP] tag is to make sure posters do not speak negative about the deceased person who is the subject of the thread. Sometimes posters try to use this tag for the living so that posters do not speak negative about the person who is the subject of the thread.

Who is being locked up for an act of journalism? All I see is a fugative being assisted in escaping a lawful extradition request.

wow you sure got your knickers in a wad

people who compromise the security of our men-including my nephew serving in the special forces in Afghanistan are scum

if killing that scumbag saves American lives, I am all for it especially since his goal was to hurt America and our military

So, you think that having such whistle blowers that could help prevent putting soldiers in harms way in the first place, are a risk to soldiers?

We NEED whistle blowers, folks. It's not like the wikileaks folks were selling their info to the highest bidder...so they were not in it for the espionage. They were in it for government oversight, and if you've glanced at the news at all in the last...7 years, you'll realize just how much our government needs oversight. It's nothing but scandal after scandal after freaking scandal. We actually have a topic page called Scandal Du Jour, on this forum. And if you think for a minute that our elected and appointed reps are above sending soldiers into harms way based on lies, obfuscations, and deceits, then we are just not going to see eye to eye, are we?

SO anyway, this story happens to be false, Equador has not made a decision yet. Decision on Assange Asylum Thursday: Ecuador Official - Yahoo! News

Patino said that Ecuador will announce its decision on Assange's asylum request Thursday morning. Some media outlets reported yesterday that Assange had been granted asylum, but Ecuadorean officials said at the time that no decision had been reached.

This part is interesting though:

"Today we've received a threat by the United Kingdom, a clear and written threat that they could storm our embassy in London if Ecuador refuses to hand in Julian Assange," said Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino.

That is almost certainly made up since Britain will just intercept him when being transported, but in a way it would not bother me if it was true. Letting other countries harbor people accused of criminal behavior in their embassy is not a good plan.

So what did Assange do?

4 allegations in Sweden: http://www.judiciary.gov.uk/Resources/JCO/Documents/Judgments/jud-aut-sweden-v-assange-judgment.pdf

1.On 13th – 14th August 2010, in the home of the injured party [name given] in Stockholm, Assange, by using violence, forced the injured party to endure his restricting her freedom of movement. The violence consisted in a firm hold of the injured party’s arms and a forceful spreading of her legs whilst lying on top of her and with his body weight preventing her from moving or shifting.
2.On 13th – 14th August 2010, in the home of the injured party [name given] in Stockholm, Assange deliberately molested the injured party by acting in a manner designed to violate her sexual integrity. Assange, who was aware that it was the expressed wish of the injured party and a prerequisite of sexual intercourse that a condom be used, consummated unprotected sexual intercourse with her without her knowledge.
3.On 18th August 2010 or on any of the days before or after that date, in the home of the injured party [name given] in Stockholm, Assange deliberately molested the injured party by acting in a manner designed to violate her sexual integrity i.e. lying next to her and pressing his naked, erect penis to her body.
4.On 17th August 2010, in the home of the injured party [name given] in Enkoping, Assange deliberately consummated sexual intercourse with her by improperly exploiting that she, due to sleep, was in a helpless state.
It is an aggravating circumstance that Assange, who was aware that it was the expressed wish of the injured party and a prerequisite of sexual intercourse that a condom be used, still consummated unprotected sexual intercourse with her. The sexual act was designed to violate the injured party’s sexual integrity.

Just to be clear, there is a procedure in the US military for whistle blowers that provides protection. Wikileaks is not a whistleblower however, they are simply a website.

Because rush limbaugh told conservatives that he's a terrorist.

(but fox news is still working hard to find a pic of Assange wearing a turban to make its case to its loyal viewers :) )

Oh, you're referring to the consensual sex. Got it.

Well, in one count that is questionable, and in the other three, illegal. See, most countries have these things called laws. When you don't follow those laws, you are subject to punishment. That is a big part of what we call civilization.

I thought he was scum until I saw some of the information that was being covered up that was released, including video of war footage. He did not steal the information, but was just a conduit of information some of which should have been public and was a wrongful coverup in my opinion.

soldiers who leak stuff to foreign nationals ought to be shot

Good. Now the U.S. should drop charges from Bradley Manning. That would be really good news. It'll never happen though. They could at least stop torturing him though.

Why would they drop charges? He (allegedly) broke the ****ing law. He deserves to never be a free man again. What he (allegedly) did cannot be allowed to go unpunished. People have to know that leaking classified information will end your time as a free person.

So when are the people who actually killed people going to be arrested? After Wikileaks did expose quite a few murders.
