Mass Shooting at Sikh Temple Outside Milwaukee [W:211]

I agree but, if G-d forbid, something like this starts happening every few weeks, what the heck is society's proper response?

It has been happening every few weeks. For quite a while now.

I don't know.

I do know, however, that a lot of the tolerance campaigns towards stigmatized minorities get mocked as "cultural Marxism" or other nonsense.

It will be interesting to see what the motive was. It is doubtful the shooter(s) were just driving down the street bored and suddenly decided to stop in at the Sikh temple and shoot a bunch of people. It is certainly possible that the shooter lived nearby and was angry because the Sikh's caused extra traffic on Sunday or maybe there was a boundary dispute over adjoining property. If there was security in place it doesn't seem at this point that they recognized the shooter(s).

Knowing that Sikhs - who have nothing to do with terrorism, and had nothing to do with 9/11 - have experienced a noticeable increase in hatred and personal attacks from white people here in the US, you'd think they would have increased security. While I have been to Hindu temples, I have not been to a Sikh temple, though I have a standing invitation. From what I understand Sikhs welcome all people as they view all people, men and women, all religions as equal. That openness and respect for all people isn't such a good thing when you are trying to secure a place of worship.

To stop tolerating right wing hate across the board. No more presidential candidates giving speeches about how Jews are culturally superior to Palestinians, no more saying that you're going to go the NAACP to tell them to get off the food stamps, no more calling gay people "perverts", no more banning cultural studies course, no more Glenn Beck, no more Rush Limbaugh, no more movements to ban the construction of mosques, no more ranting about "islamofascists", etc.

Doesn't mean we shouldn't have a discussion. Every time someone tries to bring it up, a tragedy is being "politicized" or we are having a knee-jerk reaction. We should be able to discuss this issues.

A discussion is expected and is perfectly fine.

But the reality is that these things happen in every society.

Japan has many mass stabbings.

Crazy, alienated people with extreme levels of anger directed at the outside world will find a way to put their hate into action. It doesn't have to be a gun. Oklahoma City, for example? No one shot there. 168 people still died.

No more trying to close businesses because of the political views of the owner, right?

What does right wing anything have to do with this?

Yep. Many people in the Indian army are from punjab and tend to be sikh. They are fierce fighters. I know that violence as increased against them since 9-11 because most people mistake them for muslims. It's very saddening.

Yes it is, especially considering the Pakistani muslims hate the sikhs. I served with a couple sikhs, good people they were.

Wow. 2 generalizations in 1 post. Way to represent bigots everywhere!

I don't want to be Eco's echo, but I am fairly certain his post was sarcastically intended. That is the way I read it and it makes sense to me that way.

If, and we don't know that this is what happened yet, but if they killed these people because they thought they were Muslim or something similar, obviously you understand that is an outgrowth of the culture of hate towards Muslims on the right, yes?

Uh, no.. I said we would need to become LESS tolerant of right wing hate. So MORE trying to close down the businesses of right wing hatemongers.

Calling yourself a libertarian while babbling in Orwellian double speak? Sad.

Hey, I thought hatred of religion was a left-wing phenomenom..

Is there such a thing as a non psychotic mass murderer?

Yes, apparently it happens. In fact, Jeffery Loughner, who shot up the parking lot full of Rep. Gifford supporters has been determined to be capable of understanding his actions and is reported to be ready to plead guilty in return for a life sentence.

Right-wing hatemongers are trying to close down chick-fil-A???

Not true

Sikhs do have a history of terrorism

Terrorism in India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The largest terrorist act vs Canadians was done by Sikhs when they blew an Air India plane

You do understand these aren't Muslims, right?

Nothing like sarcasm to cover bigotry.

Oh, Jesus! Here we go. Can we please limit this thread to the OP? Go to one of the several hundred Chick Fil A threads already stared here at DP to discuss that non-****ing event. All right? We're 60 something posts into this thread and you're already brining up Chick Fil A. Give it a break or take it somewhere else.
