Viral video of man picking on Chick-fil-A worker gets him fired

People on both sides of the Chick-fil-A debate seemed to agree that a Tucson man who made a viral video belittling a patient restaurant worker acted like a sanctimonious jerk, even his boss – make that ex-boss.

Adam Smith, who posted an online video of himself going through a Chick-fil-A drive-thru and ordering only the free water, was canned from his gig as chief financial officer of Vante, a Tucson medical manufacturing company, after the video made the rounds.

I think the company that fired this guy did the right thing. The Chick-fil-A employee that this jerk bullied has nothing to do with the opinions of the company’s president and this type of bullying is nothing more than good old fashioned fascism.

He's a jackass but fascism doesn't mean what you think it means.
 
What a douche. Gotta give the drive thru worker credit, she handled this crappy situation this nimrod put her in with utmost professionalism and class. Hopefully the corporate Chick Fil-A office has taken noticed and streamline her for advancement.

I agree. She might end up getting some job offers from other companies as well.
 
So...if I'm rude to someone outside of work...as in, on my own time, my company should be able to fire me for it? If I cut someone off in traffic? Blow through a red light? Maybe yell at someone, for whatever reason?

That is the great thing about being an employer. As an employer, you can choose the type you work with as long as you don't discriminate. You can be fired for having a horrible facebook page, why not for what you post on youtube?

I'd say for the most part, no. But when you're one of the company officers, in this case this douche was the CFO, you're a public figurehead for the company. This guy's actions in his personal life could have impact on the company's perception as well as business.

Ya who doesn't remember learning in history class when Hitler and his buddies went around trolling restaurants owned by people they viewed as political opponents? O wait no I'm thinking of the time his thugs went around over a period of three days and killed a hundred guys for being political opponents then seized almost total control of the state.

Apples and oranges. He literally went out of his way so he can be a douchbag to some innocent person.Not only that, he videotaped himself being a douchebag to that innocent person and posted the video online as though it was something to be proud of. His employers were probably embarrassed as hell to have such a douchebag working for them and probably figured that he acts this way to his coworkers.

I don't know. They guy was out of hand, he was being a jerk to epic proportion, I understand that. But I don't know if you should be fired for it. He wasn't on company time or representing the company, so I don't really think firing was warranted. It's getting to be that none of us can have an outside life these days and that is perchance a bit concerning.

Agreed. His face is already known around the world now as That Chik-Fil-A Douchebag. That's worse than any firing.
 
For a CFO he wasn't very bright, and oh yeah like he was totally straight. His voice sounded a little girlie to me.. :)

This jerk has achieved a level of assholisim that even in a nation known for its high percentage of assholes, raises the bar.

I hope someone beats him to a pulp. Abusing women emotionally, with not an iota of justification, is worthy of violence.

Oh, it's been this way for a long time, to which foolish conventioneers can attest. On some level, whether this is "fair" or "right," you're pretty much de facto representing your org when you're in public.

Yeah, this is a change I've not relished, the loss of a private life. However, this case has more to it. The guy was at the board of directors level. He has a fiduciary duty to the company even in his off time. Dragging the company into a national dustup could very well hurt the company's imagine, and thus their bottom line.

He lost the private life argument the moment he posted the video to the public.

There's a difference between wanting/having an outside life and actively seeking attention to yourself that will embarrass others who associate with you. I would be not helping my job security if I go out in my small town and becoming blackout intoxicated in public all the time. It's my private life, sure, but my company has a right to minimize the employees on the payroll who have poor judgment and purposely attract negative attention to themselves. Maybe in theory doing stupid stuff like that all the time "shouldn't" result in losing my job and my wife divorcing me, but they both have that right and it shouldn't be entirely unexpected. This guy has his freedom of speech, his (ex) employers have their freedom of association.

i cant imagine any grounds for a lawsuit.

I don't necessarily think that he has a legal case. But with the continued evolution of social media and such, I think we're gonna need to start adding in some protections.
