A politcian trying to use her position to try to run a business out of New York city. Weez don'ts wants your kind around here.

Powerful NYC pol says she blasted Chick-fil-A as a citizen - but she used official letterhead | Fox News
A powerful New York politician claims she was just speaking as a private citizen when she tried to run Chick-fil-A out of town, but she used her official letterhead and even invoked her position as City Council speaker to apply pressure on the embattled chicken chain.
New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has mayoral aspirations, sent a letter to New York University president John Sexton on Saturday asking the school to immediately end their contract with the fast food restaurant. The Atlanta-based company's sole New York City outlet is in the school's food court.
"I write as the Speaker of the NYC Council, and on behalf of my family. NYC is a place where we celebrate diversity. We do not believe in denigrating others. We revel in the diversity of all our citizens and their families,” the letter begins.
"Let me be clear ‐‐ I do not want establishments in my city that hold such discriminatory views," Quinn, an open lesbian who recently married her longtime partner, also wrote in the letter. "We are a city that believes our diversity is our greatest strength and we will fight anything and anyone that runs counter to that."

“As such I urge you to sever your relationship with the Chick‐fil‐A establishment that exists on your campus,” the speaker added.
The letter has drawn the ire from others on the council.
“She can write to someone as a council member, but if she states that she is writing as the Speaker it can only be on behalf of the entire council. She has to have the majority vote of the council, and I don’t recall voting on this matter,” City Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Queens) told FoxNews.com. “A stance on gay marriage is in no way a forum to prevent someone form running a business in a community.
“If we allow something like this, then the next letter might be concerning someone’s view on abortion.”
A spokesperson for Quinn told FoxNews.com in a written statement that, while officials in other cities have said they would block Chick-fil-A through land-use means, Quinn was just expressing her own views.
“Christine Quinn was simply voicing her own opinion; she fully understands that Mr. Cathy has the right to say and donate to anything he wants. But she has the right to use her voice just as much as he does,” Quinn’s spokesperson added.
The speaker elaborated on her stance and seemingly backpedaled while speaking with reporters at an event in midtown Manhattan on Tuesday.

The quote from the OP. " I write as the Speaker of the NYC Council, and on behalf of my family."
makes it very clear she is speaking from her political position and not just her personal views.

"Let me be clear ‐‐ I do not want establishments in my city that hold such discriminatory views,"

and this is why we are moving towards gridlock at all levels of govt. You can't have opposing views according to some.

Yep. You are "free" to have any opinion that the high and mighty gov't officials "evolve" to agree with, or they will ATTEMPT to deny you setting up a business, residence or using any gov't services in THEIR jurisdiction. The "liberal" gov't will accept no opposing "bigots", even if the opposing "bigots" are simply for keeping and obeying the current law. Yes they can!

I have an idea. Maybe we can wall off New York from the rest of the US. All biased politicians are moved into NY. Than regulate soda cup size, religious views, etc. Gives new meaning to Escape from New York, for the general population

Re: Powerful NYC pol says she blasted Chick-fil-A as a citizen - but she used officia

Why does the religious views of any business owner or CEO matter when considering permits to allow a business into a city? Apparently some fell that it should. Is there any religion that some people do not like some of it's stances? Many people have issues with the stance of Atheism, which appears more and more like the religious choice of our government that it is bent on forcing it on all of us. This business owner expressed his religious views, which shouldn't of been a big supprise and his company has always let it be know that they were a "Christian" business. Now people, some in government, are attempting to regulate the riligious believes expressed by business owners. Is this the path that we as a society really want to take? What next, zone out all churches that refuse to change their believes on the subject of homosexuality and same sex marriage? Take away their tax free status as a Religious organization if they happen to disagree with political stances?

No governmental agency or level of Government should be taking actions based upon the expressed religious beliefs of business owners. The owner of Chick Fil A clearly expressed it as a religious belief. If communities really feel that it is wrong, the busniness will do poorly and close anyways. Perhaps I am wrong, but I do seem to remember something in the Constitution that refers to Freedom of Religion.

What the libtards want is freedom from religion. They express desires for legal SSM, yet not for legal polygamy, prostitution or recreational drug use. It is a MISSION for some to simply change the state marriage law (I have no problem with that attitude), some of the loonier libtards even wish to assert that SSM marriage is a NOW a federal issue or even a NEW constituional right. Those that do not wish to join the rainbow parade, and simply support the current law (as even the president did until mere weeks ago) are NOW designated as "bigots" or "haters" except, of course any that are black, they are simply ignored since they will vote "properly" no matter what the demorats say in their party platform (wink, wink). "Evolving positions" are now seen "good", as politicians that "come around" are somehow good, but those that say what they mean, and mean what they say, are not to be "trusted" to represent the people. USA, USA, USA...

LOL, ok, whatever. Yet, other media outlets that support the libtard (to borrow the term from ttwtt...) view point are of course unbiased and absolutely factual and true everytime, in your opinion? Lets take the whole "homophobia" thing. Homo is of course refering to homosexuals, even though the use of that term is considered evil, and phobia refers to an irrational fear. Yet Libral media wants to paint everyone not agreeing with the liberal agenda on homosexuality as a "homophobe". I certainly do not support the "normalization" of homosexuality, as I do not believe that it is normal or natural, and I don't base that on religious beliefs. I am also against same sex marriage, as I see it as them just wanting to gain such things as tax relieve and benefits normally given to married couples. Because of that, I guess you and others will label me a "homophobe", but I have no fear, rational or unrational, of being homosexual or of homosexuals. From my point of view, I simply think they suffer from an abberation of normal sexual desires and should be cured if possible, but I do not promote going around harrassing them or violence against them. So while I do not support SSM, I am neither a homophobe or "gay basher" and it has nothing to do with my religious views or Fox News.

maybe.
If you don't like the political/social views of a business, you are free to not purchase the product or service from them.
By doing so with the help of other consumers the business will go broke and not be an issue.

What other issues do you want the govt to kick businesses out of a town/state because it conflicts with your views on that issue?.

I don't have the power to kick a business out of town.

But if you did eat at Chick-Fil-A and things didn't work out -- you may want to report them here --> Chick-Fil-A | Got Food Poisoning ?

This is me using my free speech power to help keep you better informed about the potential danger of eating at Chick-Fil-A. I've see that link a hundred times today on Facebook. It appears that for a minority of Chick-Fil-A customers, the meal results in painful food poisoning.

Can't be too careful.

I see a conspirarcy, A supporter of Christine Quinn tainted the food in revenge of the CEO for utilzing free speech.

Anytime you go out to eat, no matter the place, you need to be carefull.

So you are ok with a local govt. to ban all business where owners may not agree with SSM?
Can you show where Chick-Fil-A has refused to serve gay's.

Too bad you don't realize you and other what power you have. If no one ate at a resturant, it would go out of business, at least at that location.

NYU (one of my Alma Maters) can make up their own minds and I think I know which side they will come down on.

According to NYU spokesman John Beckman, Chick-fil-A's President Dan Cathy's comments on gay marriage were out of step with the university's views.

I've said the opposite several times in various threads. Don't put words into my mouth.

No but I can show you where people have reported getting sick as a resulted of eating there food.

If they fire someone for being gay, they may have a problem.

Good.

bad food and people getting sick from eating it is not unique to Chick..

IMO, the councilperson overstepped her bounds when she mention her position. If she was speaking just for her, then she has all the right to say what she did.

Sorry if you thought I was putting "words in your mouth".

Then do you support the councilpersons action or not regarding Chick-F...?

NYU students are bright. I'd be lucky to have my kids go there.

You can't legislate (or withhold permits) based on Scientology, Islam, or even the twisted version of Christianity practiced by Dan Cathy and WBC.

I don't even like calling Cathy a Christian, he lowers the religion into hate and bigotry just like Fred Phelps.

Anyway, I absolutely don't think a city can withhold permits based on religious beliefs. But if a business practices discrimination, that's a different story.

Re: Powerful NYC pol says she blasted Chick-fil-A as a citizen - but she used officia

Well, the Chick-Fil-A critics are going absolutely hysterical with hate. Conspiracies to taint their food? Supporting politicians who abuse their power to an absurd and obvious degree? All because one guy in the company leadership said he preferred traditional marriage?

I see ridiculous over-reach here that will burn these people in their rears but good. Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day shook them to their cores, and now they are reacting like little girls with spiders in their hair.

Here's a prediction for you: Chick-fil-A Kiss In will be a big flop.

You heard it here first.

Slander? Or do you truely believe everything that is posted there? Do you think any of those posts could be motivated by a liberal movement?

Here is what one comedian did: Function 4 Sports - Harrisonburg, VA

Their google reviews were in the 300s, but google took them down because they were malicious.

Re: Powerful NYC pol says she blasted Chick-fil-A as a citizen - but she used officia

What the libtards want is freedom from religion.

What most of us want is a complete wall of separation between governmental/public institutions and religion. And frankly, this is a perfect example of why that should be. This was a case of politicians, this time liberal, trying to use their influence and power to punish someone for their religious belief. It is wrong when public schools post the 10 Commandments and it is wrong when politicians try to intimidate people who believe in those same commandments.

Total separation.

You didn't actually go to the site did you?

You post a lie, they have your IP address. You can be sued for libel.

The great thing about the internet is people can share information, I love TripAdvisor and Yelp.

I don't know that this is either realistic or desireable. What we believe--whatever that happens to be--is part of who we are and thus how we think and vote. How we define for ourselves and what we think is right.

The zeal with which some want to strip the "public square" of any reminder of "religion" is at times destructive. I'm thinking about demands to remove long-standing crosses and statuary and so on. These are part of our history. Smacks of zealotry to me, and I don't like it.
