Colorado gun sales up after cinema killings

IF someone murdered my loved ones I wouldn't give a damn if the murderer understood his actions or not.
Which is why the families of victims aren't put in charge of the justice system.

Yes and that treatment should be execution.

Nah, execution is way too easy a way to leave this earth. If I can't have euthanasia, they can't have the death penalty. It's a waste of money. By the time these people have exhausted all of their appeals and get their nonrevokable due date? Taxpayers have spent millions. Let these people rot in jail and die alone in prison. That seems like a fitting punishment to me.

If prison weren't such a nice place (and i am not being sarcastic) where these guys where pampered and can live full lives I would tend to agree. Also I agree with you that the appeals cost a ton of money (if i understood right) which I strongly oppose. I think our appeals process is disgusting. This guy should have his chance at trial (and all others) and sentenced should be carried out within the 48 hours.

due to the circumstances surrounding his crime.

regardless of whether or not he is insane?

we punish people for choosing to commit crimes, that they understood were crimes and understood were wrong.

if he didn't know it was a crime and didn't know it was wrong, he needs mental help...not the gas chamber.

I have already answered this. Yes. The answer will be yes everytime. You can stop asking. You can read the last time I answered. It will be there.

you want revenge, we understand that.

but our system of justice doesn't work that way.

in our society, we don't kill people who had no clue what they were doing, due to severe mental illness.

Please. Get real. This guy was a PHD "student", he fully understood that killing random people was wrong. I am sick of the constant liberal cry that all personal "mistakes" are caused by some mysterious outside force (root cause?) that can only be "fixed" by a magical gov't program after massive spending to determine just how much LATER. I am against using the DP in this case, as its endless tax funded appeals are wasteful, simply issue 12 (or more) consecutive life sentences and put this moron in regular prison ASAP, thus the judical problem is solved at minimal costs. It is likely that his fate will be just like that of Jeffry Dhalmer, once he gets tired of "protective custody", he will get his "just us" in prison.

no, blood-lust for vengence has no place in our justice system.

It isn't "blood-lust" to meet out punishment that fits the crime. Killing a man who killed and/or shot 70 people is what I would say is just punishment.

its a silly idea, that only a gun can stop a gunman.

:lamo :lamo :lamo

Oh, man.

I've spent a lot of time training how to disarm a man with a gun, unarmed. I teach it. I'm very good at it. People go "Ooh!" and "Holy crap!" when they see how fast I can take a gun from someone in class. You can probably count of the fingers of one hand how many people out of a given million have trained this as much or more than I have.

I don't ever want to have to do it for real. It is extremely damn dangerous and if it doesn't work you're screwed. I'd much rather shoot a criminal with a gun than grapple with him.

Actually, just putting him in prison would keep is safe from him. However, our own safety would be improved if we could prevent others from becoming him, which is the point.

We can't really do that, because we can't predict with certainty who will just snap and lose their grasp on reality. It's not as if this guy was some homeless babbling idiot, or drug-crazed maniac. He was, as of recently, a normal to high-functioning member of society, and obviously not stupid.

Yes.

................

There is the law, but Jesus brought conpassion to the law. You'd likely do him a favor by killing him, but I do worry about blood lust among the population. I prefer to follow the Christian message.

One might argue if he is truly insane, then executing him is even more sound then someone who has the ability to rationally think.

I feel pretty confident that we can really do that to a certain extent. Ultimately, people like this don't just "snap." There are signs that people see, but don't report for a variety of reasons. The more psychiatrists get a handle on those signs and get the public educated, the safer we'll be. In any case, I'm not the kind of person who just says, "oh we can't do that" just because nobody's found a way to do it. I'd rather say that after we've actually not been able to do after putting in a solid effort.
