Is this too much or is this a fair response to the world we live in? Personally I think London is an obvious target and was already attacked in the 7/7 bombings so It makes sense to bulk up the security to deter any potential attacks!

We will never know the true security precautions that take place during Olympic games.

All precautions must be taken.

I mean hell I knew a few lads up in whistler who worked at a snowmobile tour company who went camping one night I the woods during then Olympics and ran into a JTF2 camp who spotted them before hand (Canadian SAS) sorounding the Olympic venues.

I don't mind what they're setting up London.

What would the British people rather have? Military for a month, or terrorist attacks and another election and public enquiries?

I'd take the former.

exactly mate bulk up for nothing or cut costs and see what happens, the latter has far too many risks!

It's unfortunate though, the idea of soldiers of war having to protect an inspiration for peace, the nations of the world gathering under one flag (the Olympic one) in a peaceful competition of strength, endurance and will.

Dont worry, the Torries outsourced it to a private contractor so the security is very lax if at all. The government has had to call in thousands of troops to take up the slack and I bet those areas where the private contractor actually manages to for-fill the contract, then the "security" will be snot nosed teenagers half drunk and looking at the ladies.

The hell it was.

High security at Olympics pre-dates 9/11 by decades. The only thing 9/11 did was smack America over the head and take them some what into reality where the rest of us had lived for decades.

9/11 smacked everyone on the head!

How so? The Brits had been under terror threats since donkey years.. as were the Spanish, French and Germans and Italians. Terror was nothing new in Europe.

Now on scale, well yea, but as a terror act? Nope... just more of the same.

scale, organisation, effect. 9/11 was and still is probably the most lethal and well excuted act of terror in History and completley changed our outlook on fighting Terror attacks. The IRA years were bloody but they were isolated small attacks where as 9/11's scale was huge in comparison and not only managed to hit its targets but also managed to paralyse the worlds strongest superpower. I mean look at the Madrid bombings they made ETA's previous bloodshed look like a nice day in the park.

Considering that the UK was rounding up another group of suspected terrorists just a week or so ago, beefing up security seems like a good... if belated... call. There doesn't seem to be much time to train thousands of additional security, though. I wouldn't be surprised if British Intelligence hadn't gotten wind of potential problems, and acted immediately to nip it in the bud. Anyway, good call for the Brits. Really, can't be too careful in this world.

Since London is a terrorist producing epicenter, it makes perfect sense.

Now, if the Brits were only to make themselves a bit less hospitable to Jihadists in general, that would be even better.

How about the Atlanta games? Remember the bomb?

True story: I was in Atlanta on a business trip sometime in the late 90s. I spent too much time at the convention center and needed a break. So I took a little walk through this park and sat down for a bit. I was overwhelmed with an incredibly strong sense of deja vu that I could not shake. It was so bad, I was dizzy and I feel my hair standing on end. It was not until I got up and looked around some more did I realize that not only was I in the exact same park where the infamous bomb went off, I was also close to the exact spot. I remember seeing endless coverage of it, so somewhere tucked in my mind was the memory of the park. It was one of the weirdest feelings I have ever experienced.

Atlanta was hell on earth. Some poor sluck who was actually a hero had his life completely ruined by the FBI, who decided that he had done it, then set about trying to prove he'd done it.

It was, in fact, done by a crazy anti-abortion dickwad who liked to blow up women's health clinics and decided to branch out.

Seeing how most terrorist attacks are suicide bombings then yes the commandos in boats, mounted machine guns, surface to air missiles, helicopters, navy carrier, and other military use are excessive and a total waste of money. Anything more than extra police and medal detectors are excessive.

show of force never hurts though! As an American you can appreciate that!

Please don't over- state the skill level of the 911 terrorists. They all trained to fly in American flight schools and were just asking to get picked up. 911 was an epic FAIL for our intelligence branches and was a wake-up call for that reason. Remember we had one of the hijackers in custody 2 weeks before the attacks and could not connect the dots. He was training to fly widebody commercial jets, he told the teacher he only wanted to learn to fly and turn the plane, not land or take-off. He paid for the training with $16,000 cash. 2 weeks before he was picked up Bush got the warning...."Alqeada is planning to hijack airplanes"......Bush gave no one this warning, not the airlines, not the pilots, no one. Like I said epic fail.

it was also very well planned from the ground level up and very effective! You can blame Bush all you want and he probably deserves some blame but lets not forget it was a very well conceived plan which took years of planning and unfourtuntly for us it was very well executed

Its a blatant waste of money.Does Al Qeada have a airforce, stormed a country by sea, or send in troops?

Day 1 of the first arrivals. Day one of the first security failures. Police and military have had to step in to provide security in areas that the private company was suppose to secure... no one turned up from the private company basically.

So far the London Olympics have only shown us not to outsource security to private companies.
