Joe Paterno, PSU Officials 'Concealed' Sandusky's Abuse to Avoid Bad Publicity: Report - Yahoo! News <-- clicky

Former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno and other top university officials acted with "total disregard" for the children sexually abused by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky because of their fear of "bad publicity," a report by the university's internal investigation said today.

The report was released at the conclusion of the investigation led by former FBI director Louis Freeh, who was hired to find out why officials who knew of child molestation accusations failed to stop Sandusky or report him to police.

The report said that Paterno, along with officials Tim Curley, Gary Schultz, and former president Graham Spanier, "repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse from the authorities," and it blamed those four men for failing to stop Sandusky and protect other chidlren from his harm

Anyone surprised?

Are people still going to flock to Joe Paterno's defense and claim him to still be a hero among men???????

I'm sure millions will......

Not I - not surprised at all. The guy basically threw away several decades of good to support a criminal slimeball who should have been quickly thrown over the bus and then have it driven over and back over him several times. Now his reputation and legacy is forever trashed and smashed, crushed and flushed.

Disgusting.

Why should the lack of integrity be limited only to the government?

Penn State leaders disregarded victims, 'empowered' Sandusky, review finds - CNN.com

"Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky's child victims by the most senior leaders at Penn State," Freeh wrote.

"The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized."

He went on to name four former school officials -- former President Graham Spanier, former Vice President Gary Schultz, legendary former head coach Joe Paterno, and former athletic director Tim Curley.

They will have to have the checks that they will be writing reprinted, so as to allow for more zero's.

I hope he made clean with his maker prior to his death, because he absolutely needed to.

While on one hand I understand that judging from the outside in on how someone should react when they learn something distrubing about someone that is as close as family is a difficult thing, there's still no real excuse for it. The 1998 issues is at least SOMEWHAT understandable, but in light of knowledge of the 1998 investigation the actions in 2001 onwards is just unexcusable.

The statue is likely coming down at Penn State, and Phil Knight is already going about changing the name of a foundation he has that uses Paterno's name.

I'm not the least bit surprised. Sandusky did not carry out his blatant molestations in a vacuum. Others clearly were aware, including his wife, and did nothing. I hope they can live with themselves.

It is amazingly sad how it all turned out. I doubt we will even understand just how this could have gone on so long to so many kids, with so many knowing but looking the other way. Truly sad.

It makes me wonder what great hold the head perv had on these others. It must have been great to risk all that they did, instead of just making him disappear, as quietly as possible, citing "health issues". PSU is likely history as many will go to jail and the civil suits will be HUGE and numerous (at least 25). A one horse town is nothing without that horse.

At first I defended Paterno and blamed how Sandusky took advantage and destroyed Paterno's reputation. Now that his comes out, somebody needs throw a bucket of fresh cow manure over the Paterno statue at Penn State.

Paterno was a great coach but to be a part of this cover up destroys all that.

Mr. Paterno, I have completely lost all respect for you.

Re: Joe Paterno, PSU Officials 'Concealed' Sandusky's Abuse to Avoid Bad Publicity: R

Seems that when the going got tough, Joe couldn't make the tough call after all.

When the mighty fall they fall hard?

I think of all those Penn State students crying for poor Joe. Have they started caring about the poor kids raped on their campus?

The Catholic Church went through something similar with their priest during those years when crimes were exposed.

Do you have any proof that they don't care? Lots of ordinary people didn't know; there was a coverup remember?
