Scientists to unveil proof of ‘God particle’[W:74]

Re: Scientists to unveil proof of ‘God particle’

I have faith in scientific method, but that faith is not the same type of faith that theists speak of or mean. To confuse the word faith when applied to science is fallacious, since obviously the majority is not talking about science as if it were a belief system comparable to religions. No one has a faith in dark matter (perhaps some new age folk do?) instead dark matter and dark energy are theories that are agreeably unproven. The fact that you are saying that scientists have some kind of faith in dark matter shows that you have really no understanding of scientific method.

The great advantage of the scientific method is that it is unprejudiced: one does not have to believe a given researcher, one can redo the experiment and determine whether his/her results are true or false. The conclusions will hold irrespective of the state of mind, or the religious persuasion, or the state of consciousness of the investigator and/or the subject of the investigation. Faith, defined as belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence, does not determine whether a scientific theory is adopted or discarded.

b...b....but the theory of gravity is only a theory.

Re: Scientists to unveil proof of ‘God particle’

Either you don't understand the scientific method or your pulling someone's leg. :p

Scientific theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's longish but all you really need to know is the diffrence between a scientific hypothesis, a theory and a law.

If your pulling someone's leg, ya got me as well :)

I suggest you take the word "theory" very seriously when applied to gravity.

Re: Scientists to unveil proof of ‘God particle’

We gain knowledge by having faith in things that cannot be empirically confirmed as even existing?

Nope...we gain knowledge through learning new stuff. In this case observation leads to hypothesis to explain an unknown, hypothesis leads to theory....eventually. However, we continue observation to develop said hypothesis and sometimes find cool stuff like, oh I dont know.....the Higgs Boson.

I think it's called science.

Who is Allah a wizard? And dont you think that turning off beta decay would do much more than restricting you from looking at porn online?

When and if Allah does turn off beta decay, you can view him as a wizard, if you like.

Turning of beta decay will be devastating.

Well since there are no such things as wizards then the universe is safe.

Well, I suppose we need to promote the Law of Karma as a scientific hypothesis, then.

"local acts of evil, through the mechanism of complex adaptive systems, elevates global good"

Yeah, but there's no scientific law of karma. Karma itself does not exist.

Re: Scientists to unveil proof of ‘God particle’

God= MC^2 is false. God particle is a misnomer. Wonder and amazement does not make the existence of a deity more or less probable, nor does the discovery of a novel particle or scientific fact, any more than the discovery of the neutrino or the Americas did.

I suggest you don't take me seriously. LOL.

Then what the hell was my Ma driving? LOL.

Methinks you are missing my point. I have a strong suspicion that we are going to see a major paradigm shift in regards to gravity in the not too distant future.

Could be, since quantum gravity theory is now the main challenger to string theory.

Anyways the original news was, "Higgs Bosson might have been detected." Well was it or wasn't it?

A boson that exhibits behavior predicted of the Higgs has been found, further testing will determine.

Thankfully it only took trillions of tests to figure out if it needed hundreds of trillions of testing to actually determine what it is.

Better trillions on science than trillions on war, IMO.
