Anti-racism ad campaign in Minnesota town called 'racist' by critics

My two cents is that pointing out the existence of white privilege isn't racist - although it's often characterized that way by critics of anti-racism. And I have no doubt that campaigns are like this are bound to piss people off. Racism is a sensitive topic. If people aren't being challenged to think about it, then progress isn't being made.

As for the un-fair campaign being "hypocritical" - maybe so. But I'd argue that once again, maybe that's the POINT. It's intentional because challenges people's assumptions and sensibilities about race and racism. Don't like how white people are being characterized in this campaign? Then maybe it's because you haven't taken the time to put yourself in the shoes of a racial minority and experienced the generalizations, the discrimination, and stereotyping that they face in society all too frequently.

There's all too many folks that think "anti-racism" simply means ignoring racial distinctions, sweeping them under the rug, and pretending they don't exist and not talking about racism as if we're already a colorblind society. Most of you know that as an adherent of critical race theory I pretty much reject that approach. :twocents:

On the other hand, that is some sick racist crap. To assume that anyone, indeed, everyone, who is white is somehow privileged is just plain racist, and for you not to recognize this means that you, StillBallin, and anyone else on this forum who does not categorically reject this utterly idiotic ad, are a racist.

Are you implying that people with skin tones other than “white” don’t experience such problems? That would be pretty racist of you wouldn’t it?

Its humor dude.

1. Its irony at its finest since this campaign is about problems white people face, therefore it is an actual white people problem
2. There is a certain humorous cultural implication and coloquialism (not that its real, but its fun to poke fun at these sorts of cultural silly things)
3. Its pointing out that this supposed problem mentioned in the OP is not a big enough problem to care about. So its pointing out people's silly whining.
4. Its just a funny website (and yes I am white as well, but I can laugh at myself even though its an obvious stereotype)

I hate having to explain jokes.

Try this one.

The first rule of white club is that you never talk about white club.

The second rule of white is that there is no white club.

It doesn't matter that you know about other people's clubs or groups.

There's no law that can make me socialize with people that I don't want to.

No, not you specifically. It was generally about people who fight against efforts to attack racism. But, regardless, you just said in your last post that somehow that was bigotry and something about how I was denying that you had ever been the victim of discrimination... No idea where you're getting either of those things. Can you explain?

Bigotry is the state of mind of a "bigot", a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one who exhibits intolerance or animosity toward members of a group. Bigotry may be based on real or perceived characteristics, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, nationality, region, language, religious or spiritual belief, personal habits, political alignment, age, economic status or disability. Bigotry is sometimes developed into an ideology or world view. (LINK)

You might want to review your comments and the above definition to understand why it is bigotry.

Well, if you can't come up with any explanation for your comments I guess I can't really respond to them. But if you think something I said was bigotry or that something I said means that I think you have never been the victim of discrimination, please explain. Otherwise I guess we'll just let it drop.

Fair enough. If you hate having to explain your jokes, you might want to consider not cracking jokes that can be perceived numerous ways.

They are generally meant for people who aren't all up in arms about minor problems in life and take things said solely within that context, but are for people who can relax and have fun.

It's just sick that any of you are so morally depraved to object even to something as innocuous as this. The kneejerk reaction of the right to attack any attempt to lessen racism is just sick. You should be ashamed of yourselves. The Republican party is flat out turning into a white supremacist party. Disgusting.

This ad if far from "innocuous." It is toxic, racist horsesh*t. If you cannot see that then I suggest you seek counseling.

You backed off the “white supremacist” label. I think you know where I was about to take you if you hadn’t. that’s good enough for me.

What about it do you consider "racist"? It seems obviously and overtly anti-racist to me, no?

I didn't back off of anything. I have made no personal attacks and am in compliance with the rules here. But certainly I still firmly believe that kneejerk reactions to fight against anything that tries to counter racism is white supremacy. No hedging on that at all.

And the topic of this thread never occurred to you when you posted that for those who can relax and have fun did it. Do you make jokes about death during funerals too? I can laugh about death but I don’t do it at funerals for obvious reason.

BTW, is that you in the green tights in your sig-pic?

Well, a funeral tends to be a serious problem ...

I am the one in yellow.

So many Black Panthers are white supremacists by your logic right? Many of them fight against countering racism. How about other non-white racial gangs that believe their race is superior to others, are they white supremacists too?

Obviously you're just being silly now.

And needing to buy you cat organic tuna because it has allergies isn’t a serious problem? Why do white people’s cats always have to be black? Is that an insinuation that whites subconsciously crave ownership of black slaves, even today?

You have small feet for such a big guy.

I am glad you are relaxing now and making jokes. Being all up in arms about minor matters in life can be bad for one's health.

I hate racism wherever it occurs. The ugliest thing about racism is when it becomes publicly acceptable and racism against whites is obviously becoming publicly acceptable. Hopefully I’ll always be up in arms about such things.

We must be ever vigilante about those racists who want to keep the white man down.

Were you wearing your bed sheet when you wrote that?

I got a chuckle. Honestly. I did. Whenever people talk to me about the plight of "white men" - I can't help but think about the fact that all 3 branches of government are composed primarily of white men, most fortune 500 companies are run by white men, most of the US media is owned by white men and out of the top 10 richest people in the world 9 are white (with the notable exception of Carlos Slim Helu, a Mexican of Lebanese ancestry - also the richest man in the world). I honestly do feel bad for the white man though. Not being able to say nigger is terrible.
