White student lauded after returning college scholarship meant for blacks - U.S. News

Um - huh? I'm confused - why is a "blacks only" scholarship even allowed? Especially a scholarship given in the name of Martin Luther King, Jr? Someone who marched and died for equality. This just doesn't seem right.

What happened to merit-based scholarships?

I don't like scholarships that single out students based on race, sex or anything else. They should be based on merit only, academic or otherwise.

I don't like race/ethnicity/minority status based scholarships.

I can get a scholarship because I'm left handed. How silly.

I got a scholarship because I am Catholic. Mind you I am not practicing and have 0 faith at all, but they still gave it to me knowing that because I am still a Catholic in their eyes.

It is a private scholarship using private money, they can set any criteria they want. There is nothing inappropriate about that. There are myriad private scholarships of this type. The winner returned the $1000 scholarship award designated for a black student, he will garner much more as a result.

The scholarship wasn't a "blacks only" scholarship

He already has, but it doesn't seem right. If it were a whites only scholarship, it wouldn't be allowed. And the scholarship is being used in the name of MLK, and I think that's wrong.

White only scholarships are allowed. What makes you think they're not?

~snip~ The $1,000 scholarship, one of two awarded annually by the seniors club, is meant for African-American students.

~snip~ Warren applied online and apparently never saw a separate letter sent to school counselors specifying that it was for black students.

"meant for" <> blacks only

you are actually correct

there are scholarships for Italians
Irish, Russians, Latvians, and Greeks for examples.

while I suppose there are black Greeks though

Oh really? So if I have a private business I can have special white prices? I can start a white college fund?

Seeing how I do not believe in race based scholarships I would have kept that scholarship if I was him.

Quoted from the originally supplied link (reading is for the mental, I mean, fundamental):

"Brown said the club’s scholarship committee will meet to revise the language on the application to clarify it's for African-American students so there’s no misunderstanding in the future."

I know he did I didn't spell check.

Whether it would be "allowed" is determined by the language of the scholarship itself. The recipient can always refuse the funds as well. The scholarship could be used in the name of Elmer Fudd where only those who have cwazy wabbits for pets qualify as long as it is a private scholarship using private finds they really do call the shots.

I didn't say it wasn't legal, Sangha - I said it wasn't right.

True. I seem to have taken you comment wrong

However, I don't see anything wrong with it for the same reason I see nothing wrong with collecting funds for the starving children of India

Your father is a bishop. Don't lie.

No no,I think you're missing the point!

First its a gift. Second, there's LOTS of scholarships.

If some asthmatic with coke bottle glasses gets rich and wants to kick down to some asthmatic kid with coke bottle glasses, what's the problem? Its his money, and he wants it to go where he thinks it'll do the most good.

Id bet that there may be no "whites only" scholarships but there's probably Irish ones, etc.

What if you're half black/white? Could you have the blacks only scholarship then?
