ALBANY — The New York Police Department, the mayor and the city’s top prosecutors on Monday endorsed a proposal to decriminalize the open possession of small amounts of marijuana, giving an unexpected lift to an effort by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to cut down on the number of people arrested as a result of police stops.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, whose Police Department made about 50,000 arrests last year for low-level marijuana possession, said the governor’s proposal “strikes the right balance” in part because it would still allow the police to arrest people who smoke marijuana in public.

The marijuana arrests are a byproduct of the Police Department’s increasingly controversial stop-and-frisk practice. Mr. Bloomberg and police officials say the practice has made the city safer, but, because most of those stopped are black or Hispanic, the practice has been criticized as racially biased by advocates for minority communities.

Hey, holding a Big Gulp? Face a death squad. Holding a doobie? No prol'um mon.

it's nearly inevitable that it will be legalized eventually. i find it sad that it's going to take 20 or 30 years and criminal records for a bunch of non criminals before we can finally embrace the obvious.

He wants to cut obesity by trying to ban sodas over 16oz but he wants to legalize the one thing that gives people the munchies.

He is demonstrating the undeniable truth that government left unchecked, will eventually wander toward a point of absurdity.

The soda ban itself is absurd.A lot of natural fruit juice with nothing added contains just as much or more sugar and calories than soda. Kind of make you wonder if all these food nazis don't really know that it is excessive calories that causes people to be overweight.

Well I agree with Bloomberg that soda is bad, but it's none of his ****ing business.

Pot is probably responsible for half the obesity problem in this country, and 75 percent of Whataburger's annual profits.

Lol. "Marijuana is not a gateway drug that leads to harder drugs. It's more of a drive thru drug that leads to french fries and Frosties."

I can assure you, this is a myth :D

I'll call bull**** on that, lol. You might get alittle chubby smoking alot of pot, but I don't know anyone that started out at a normal weight, started smoking weed, and then turned obese.

I was going for comedy, but there's a reason Jack-in-the-Box has built a specific ad campaign aimed at potheads.

I agree. I've been smoking pot and working out for years and dont weigh more than a buck O five. It does encourage the munchies but it doesn't make people fat

In later years when you're hacking blood out of your lungs, you can think of this moment.

Not withstanding the ridiculous exaggeration, you're missing the difference between supply and possession.

Nobody will be punished for drinking vast amounts of soda but companies are being prevented from selling it in huge sizes, which only encourage people to consume (and pay) more than they would naturally choose to.

That's a little bit of the ol' hyperbole there, huh?

On it's own, I have no issues with this. However, it's hillarious given all the other crap Bloomberg is trying to do with what we put in our body

Jesus people....did the "75 percent of Whataburger's annual profits" not tip Erod's comment off as a pure tongue in cheek joke? Really?

Maybe the forum needs to legalize pot so people can lighten up a bit.

So then it was a bit of the ol' hyperbole then.

Yes, but it's kind of like Lewis Black making a statement and then someone having to ask if "it was a bit of ol' sarcasm there". The last part of his statement made the answer to your question pretty blatantly evident, which is why the asking of the question in the first place confused me.
