New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March

So now I'm not allowed to buy a big coke at the movies if I want one? What's next, my quarter pounded with cheese will be reduced to a sixteenth pounder?

Here's your nanny state liberals love so much. "Gimme money, gimme healthcare, gimme all day to sit on my butt, and if I get fat eating value meals, it's the government's fault."

Sad. Pathetic. Is this really what we want government doing?

This is retarded.

Yet one more reason to stay out of that craphole called the Big Apple.

Next up on the target list:

Twinkies
cheesecake
smoking
prime rib
alcohol
Krispy Kremes
birthday cakes

it's another measure that will do very little to motivate people to count calories and exercise. sustained weight loss requires both for most of us.

putting calories on the menu next to the item is a much better tool. i think NYC has done this already. i support that one.

people should be able to order as much food as they want, but they should know exactly what they're getting.

The era of big gov't is just beginning. Obama and the feds now wish to tell us what we must buy and NYC what nobody can buy. While I don't live in NYC they can do so, as it does not affect me nor can I vote those morons out. The danger in these regualtions, just as in CA only auto rules, is that limitting choice, while rasing taxes, may finally make people vote with their feet. What this 'serving' size nonsense accomplishes is beyond me, since even an obese moron can now simply buy two 16 oz. sodas instead of one 32 oz. soda, so it is simply an exercise in time wasting and poses inventory restrictions on many retaliers. Curiously 'free refills' are still allowed.

Screw New York............................

For now...but I'm sure they working on closing that "loophole".

OMG! Has Obama taken over New York City now?

As for the rest, you're right. This proposed law isn't going to accomplish much, if anything. You can't legislate positive choices.

Putting calorie counts right on the menu is a much better idea. Applebe's started doing that here, and holy crap, some of the entres I used to like have a whole day's allotment of calories or more!

Oh, to own a convenience store just on the other side of the NYC border. They're going to make a mint on people coming outside the city to buy drinks now. I wonder how long until the owners of all the supermarkets, bodegas, etc.... in New York City rise up in revolt.

Bloomberg is a big government statist criminal, **** him. May he slip and drop his junk on the third rail.

Government does something I don't like, must be them liberals!

Govt is saying we are too stupid to make our own choices. Sadly (as a whole) Americans are proving them right every chance we get. I don't agree with it however. Government doesn't and shouldn't have that authority. I find it funny however that you want to target liberals in the OP when it seems to me conservatives are the one more often fighting to keep things restricted (marijuana for one example).

For now...but I'm sure they working on closing that "loophole".

Closing that 'loophole' would require reconfiguration of many, many establishments. Unless you physically secure the soda source (eliminating self serve) then you would need a "soda cop" to enforce it. The whole thing is moronic, since limits only on serving size, yet being unable to prevent an unlimitted number of servings, is still easy to avert, just possibly a bit more expensive and inconvenient. Short of issuing individual, non-transferable rationing coupons, it is not possible to keep "Porky" from easily getting their soda pop fix.

blue laws, aren't supported by Liberals..but by Conservatives.

drug-decriminalization is opposed by Conservatives.

this is clearly a progressive policy

Monons abound in all parties, levels and positions within gov't, and well over 80% of them will be re-elected.

Not really, because it falls under the conservatives mantra of "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!".

Which is why we had FCC for so long able to "censor" television from the poor children who might see inappropriate things because their parents are too f*****g lazy to actually change the channel.

LOL, keep telling yourself that. No, liberals are the ones trying to explode the size and scale of government.

And yes, let's decriminalize drugs so we can hire more cannibalism agents in the Miami police department.
