New York lawmakers propose ban on anonymous online comments [W: 68]

Bad idea. Free speech and all that. Speaking anonymously is part of that freedom.
 
New York is a hot competitor with California to see who can make the biggest Nanny State society. I assume that that's what the people want.

Why not just target cyberbullying itself, say with statutes specifying it as against the law, prosecution in juvenile court and lenient sentencing favoring counseling over incarceration.

It's more localized that that, really. There are two great focal points of stupidity in this nation—New York City, and Than Fwanthithco. These places tend to adversely influence the States which contain them, but they are really the true centers of this kind of stupidity.

If something this stupid was going to happen, it is certainly more likely than not that it would happen in or near one of these two places.

our economy is kicking butt, murder rate is dropping to record levels, the streets are cleaner, millions of tourists every year, and the State has a balanced-budget...as compared to California's $16 billion deficit.

too bad the rest of the USA isn't like New York City.

and by the way, why do you always use a lisp when saying San Francisco? is this supposed to be some sort of anti-gay thing?

Brings to mind the setting of the movie “Demolition Man”. A nice, clean, “crime free” city, accomplished by government enforcing very strict control over the citizens.

It is, of course, no surprise that you are the one person who defends this latest specific bit of idiocy, as well as the overall format that this idiocy takes, in terms of establishing New York City as the closest real-world attempt at a “Demolition Man” setting.

Real life bullying is far worse than anything you can do over the internet, and yet you don't see anyone trying to grossly violate everyone's constitutional rights to stop that. Children saying nasty things to each other is one the consequences of a free society and is a pretty small price to pay for its benefits. I'd be a little more impressed if New York had tried going after the children who bull each other publicly on facebook before going straight for the authoritarian nonsense.
 
I disagree with some, in that I believe cyber-bullying is a real and pervasive problem. Kids nowadays socialize online. They all have web pages, smart phones, and computers. When groups get together to destroy or smear a real-life person, especially when that person is a vulnerable teen or pre-teen, it can be every bit as devastating as real-life bullying. I can't imagine myself as a shy teenager with self-esteem issues if someone snapped a nude photo of me in P.E., posted it online and emailed it to everyone in my high school. The jeers, laughter, finger-pointing and lewed comments would have been shattering. Kids have committed suicide over cyber-bullying.

That said, this bill does not address the problem, and invades the privacy of everyone. Cyber-bullying should be criminalized, and the criminals should be prosecuted. This solves nothing, is a horrible law, and will lead to someone being the victim of a crime because their personal information was available for all to see.

Bad idea.

Now, if someone wants to post libel against me, then I should have a right to know who posted it, so I can then sue his ***.

If some *** is posting garbage about a teenager, then the parents of said teenager need to know who posted it, so they can slap them upside the head or perhaps take more appropriate action.

But, it's not the business of the State of New York, or any other government entity. It's a freedom of speech issue.

I remain anonymous on this forum for two reasons:

1. I have already been stalked on another forum, where someone posted my name, a picture of me, and the agency I work for.

2. Calls for violence against me have been made on this forum.

Thats why I stay anonymous.

However, if this law passes in the New York State Legislaure (not New York City as someone suggested), I will become unanonymous.
