New York lawmakers propose ban on anonymous online comments [W: 68]

I don't support this law. I never said I did. Are we you finished?

Looking back at this thread, it's amazing how little of what you said actual addresses whether you support this proposed law or not. This is the first you've said that indicates that you do not. Your previous comments indicated that you supported, if not this specific proposal, at least the principles upon which it is based.

we have the right to privacy, not anonymity.

I have a middle-way.

all internet forums or websites where folks become members and post comments, must get a copy of ones driver's license, that can be verified.

that way, if a member actually does engage in stalking/threats, that forum can be contacted by the police to get the person's name & address.

Bad idea.It's no one's business who I am,especially when I am online.

an argument can be made for both anonymous & unanonymous posting.

i think as long as the police have a reliable way to track down criminals/stalkers, basic anonymity while posting should be ok.

Devil's Advocate proposition:

What if real ID-required confirmation were required to sign up for posting, but once done you were publicly allowed to post anonymously?

Equally stupid.

Not to mention ****ing impossible. Do New York lawmakers even know how the internet works?

(hint: no. no they don't)

It's barely even possible to regulate the internet at a Federal level. It's impossible to do it at a state level.

This is New York, after all.

They aren't the first, nor will they be the last. The problem is that they're mostly old people with little to no real computer knowledge. Sure, they can probably surf the internet and send out emails, write up memos, etc, but they haven't the foggiest idea how the whole deal actually works.

...The only recollection I have of any such threats being made on this forum, in which you were involved, you were the one making the threats. I guess that's easier to do when you think you're doing so anonymously....

sorry, but I can't let this malicious lie stand.

I have NEVER threatened anyone on this forum, or any other forum..with violence of ANY kind. Any such assertion is 100% dishonest, baseless, and petty.

I wonder just how many people do actually understand how the internet works? I'm not sure I do. I use it, sure, but then I also ride on airplanes without having the foggiest idea how to fly one.

Even with my limited knowledge, however, I can see that a ban like that passed by a state is not going to accomplish anything.

Unfortunately, the "Vegas Rule" prevents me from discussing the proof here. Of course, you knew that you'd be able to hide this lie behind that rule.

again, you are lying about my comments, as I have NEVER threatened violence against anyone in this or any other forum.

please stop this.

I would just link them to this post and ask:

What state is this post in?

Unfortunately, mentioning this borders on violating the Vegas Rule itself. Cease this and cease discussing the actions of other posters.

Our Legislators are great at balancing the budget....but not so great on modern-tech.

oh well, live & learn.

Its completely inexcusable for a legislator to be grossly ignorant about the field in which they are passing a law. While sadly politically impossible, that kind of incompetence should be grounds for impeachment. Nothing pisses me off more than people in positions of power who are too LAZY to actually bother to learn about important issues.

Live ad learn NOTHING - why are these people making laws surrounding technology they don't understand, without trying to understand it, or gwetting people involved who understand it, and why the hell is it OK at all?

and yet, it happens ALLLLLLLL the time.

anyways, I dont think this bill will pass. Shelly Silver won't let it come up for a vote.

Good idea? Bad idea?

WTF is wrong with people? Holy ****! That's so offensive . . . I swear - NYC sounds like they're going communistic or some ****. My god - the ****ing ideas they **** out of their assholes. . . all to 'protect kids from cyberbullying'

Geesh - maybe they should ban social-media . . . the net was around my entire life, pretty much, and only recently did such a thing become a problem.

If someone wants to know my personal info related to my online IP, etc - they could find it out WITH A WARRANT

someday, folks will learn the difference between New York City and New York State.

and btw, this bill is sponsored by a Suffolk County Republican, not a dude from NYC.
