If successful, this could herald a new era in space flight. While NASA will continue it's mission to explore other planets, the heavy lifting of supplies, and eventually astronauts, could be done by private enterprise. Thus government and private enterprise could both be partners in the next evolution of space flight. Who would gain the most from this symbiosis? The taxpayers, of course.

I was reading a piece through NPR about some of the differences between the two groups. NASA was older, more analytic, and skeptical, and Spacex was young, quick-test oriented, and optimistic. That said, they apparently enjoy the relationship, even if NASA has to be big brother about it.
 
This is very cool. I hope the docking goes well.

And since this is a political site ... this is an example of Obama privatizing a formerly government function and thus saving the taxpayers billions and billions of dollars on a new shuttle program. Saul Alinsky must be spinning in his grave. :D

While this is true for the mean time, when space starts to become malitirized it's going be a huge issue the government must go through private contractors for self defense. Imagine if the only army we had were paid off mercs like blackwater. people who fight only for money tend to pick the side of the highest bidder.

An orbital nuke is well within the means and capabilities of several countries today. we would have very little warning and zero chance to shoot it down with a ballistic missisle system Even if we could do the impossible and blow it up, the nuclear fallout would be still occur.

I don't necessarily disagree with the privatization or space flight, but I don't think that the government should be involved with private companies. NASA should be NASA and private companies should be allowed to do what they want with space flight without government intervention. That's why they're called "private" companies. Bottom line is we've lost the ability to dream in this country and I think Neil deGrasse Tyson sums up the current space program situation very well in this video:

I disagree. The International Space Station was partially designed at NASA, and NASA personnel are very familiar with it. Nothing wrong with NASA helping the company out with docking designs and other issues that they have already dealt with. This is not intervention, but partnership. There is a difference.
