Is Batman gay? Major DC Comics character to come out of the closet

Flashpoint. It was a continuity-wide reboot-- Barbara can walk because The Killing Joke never happened.

I would bitch, but then I remember Phoenix coming back, which was worse.

Which time? Phoenix is in the process of coming back again in the Avengers vs. X-Men mini-series right now.

Very few people who know the characters only from the movies care or know what happens in the comics. They are two different worlds. Superman has been dead. Didn't stop anyone from seeing Superman movies. Batman has been dead, had his back broken, etc. Didn't stop anyone from seeing Batman movies. I'm sure the vast majority of people who go to the movies don't know and don't care about the comics, they're just seeing the cultural icons that they've always known about in society.
I understand that. I used to read comic books too...when I was 12. That all completely ignores the 'real world'. Should DC come out and 'out' Batman there is a risk that enough people would make an issue of it and simply choose not to go see the next version where it might impact the movie marketability. That is the primary reason why I doubt they would make the Batman gay. You HONESTLY dont see that as a real concern to those invested in the franchise?

At least kids who read comics will learn some tolerance early on.

This is just how DC rolls. Marvel retcons, DC reboots.

I have no problem with Phoenix coming back, because that's what a phoenix does.

If you want a character resurrection that bothers me... try Colossus. Or, as much as I love him, Captain America. Or for sheer, unfathomable anti-climactic ****ery... Aunt May.

A political tool? So a comic maker, seeking to expand their audience, decides to make a change in a character, and you see politics?

Color me shocked.

:coffeepap

Acting like politics is not relevant to their decision is not only obscenely naive, it completely ignores what the actual article says. It quotes a DC rep mentioning Obama's recent support for gay marriage as influencing this major character change. Don't get much more political than that.

No he did not. Here is the quote from the article, which you surprisingly(or not) failed to include:

Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne said DiDio’s view ‘had evolved’, comparing the shift to Barack Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

He compared DC's shift in stance to Obama's shift in stance.

 This response is just a pathetic attempt at splitting hairs.

No, actually your post was untrue in a significant fact. DC did not claim they where influenced by Obama's change in stance. This was the gist of your post, and was not true. That is not splitting hairs, it is proving you wrong.

Well, the batman thing would kinda make sense. Consider all the hot women in Batman's daily life : poison ivy, harlequin, black cat, batgirl, etc. And what is he usually doing instead of those ladies? driving around with some young boy in tights.

Given that, as far as I know, Dick Grayson is depicted in most versions of the Batman story as having been a minor at the time he was taken in by Bruce Wayne; and in any event, always considerably younger, and with Bruce Wayne exercising significant authority over him; homosexuality would not be the most inappropriate aspect of any depicted sexual relationship; it would be about an adult sexually abusing a minor over which he has guardianship. Even if we don't have the relationship taking that direction until after Mr. Grayson reaches adulthood, it would still be about Mr. Wayne exploiting his authority in a highly-inappropriate manner—not much different from a boss having a sexual affair with a subordinate, or a college professor having a sexual affair with one of his students.

How so? What would be different in Batman's behavior and/or history that would cause problems in the DC Universe? AFAIK, Batman's never had a girlfriend he was actually screwing. He only played the part of a wealthy playboy which would be consistent with a lot of gay men during those times (50's and 60's).

Aside from the fact that isn't true, there is a lot of sexual tension between Batman and female charaters among his allies and villains.

Marvel went on about how they were introducing a black hispanic Spider-Man. Turned out to be an alternate universe version of the character (fanboys still moaned). It's not going to be a main character. Aren't there like 50 Robins anyway, why not turn one of them?

Don't approve of changing the sexuality of a long-standing character if that character's sexuality has ever mattered to that character.

Making Batman gay would be a problem. (Catwoman, Talia al Ghul... these aren't just flings, these are relationships that have had profound influence on his life.) Superman? His civilian identity is as whitebread as possible to contrast with his amazing powers and the fact that he's the illegalest and alienest of the illegal aliens. Making him into any kind of minority misses the point. Making Hal Jordan gay would send me into a frothing homicidal rage.

Using J'onn would be a copout, since he's an alien-- and an alien alien, unlike Superman-- but could work. Cyborg is a good bet, and might actually be intriguing when combined with his body issues. It would work with Wonder Woman, but that would be pandering to an entirely different demographic.

I'd rather see them make new gay characters, and then write those characters into major figures in the DC Universe.

How dare you use actual reasoning, logic, and rational arguments revolving around the actual comic books to make a point on this rather than just joining with everyone else in making it the steroetypical "gay acceptance vs not gay acceptance" / "you're bigots / you're forcing your views on people" type of thread but with comic references tossed in.

Not reading or keeping up with much DC stuff, what about Flash?

A lesbian Batgirl or Wonder Woman is something I could get behind!

Okay...it's too easy, I gotta do it...

A lesbian batgirl and wonder woman would be something I'd like to get behind as well.......

It's a bit sad how such iconic comics are being used as a political tool. When does Spiderman reveal himself to be a capitalist, and the Hulk a pro-life supporter, or Thor a Ron Paul supporter?

Uh, comic books have always been used as a political tool. Every hear of Captain America?

Exactly. I've been reading through a lot of the old Iron Man comics from the 60s and they did a lot of environmental stories in the late 60s/early 70s. DC rebooted Firestorm in the early 90s and made him a crusader against nuclear proliferation. Anyone who says comic characters haven't always been used for providing social commentary has never read comics.

I mean come on...

should have kept reading befor eI posted the above.

Considering Batman's ingenuity with gadgets, tell me you don't want to see what kind of bat-dildo he can come up with.

Most, if not all of the sexual tension was generated from the women. And if you'll notice, many gay men during those times had wives and children.

A lesbian Wonder Woman would not work. Wasn't she involved with more than a few men since her inception?

Oh, a lesbian Wonder Woman would definitely work. Who gives a **** abut the storyline when there's sexy lesbian scenes to consider?

Too late..I already went there. But that DOES bring up a point. When they introduce gay characters are they going to promote the stereotypical hot sexxxy lipstick lesbian that guys still fantasize about or are they going to present a raspy tattoo'd chunky somewhat less appealing butch les? And if it is a guy will they make them the ultimate in macho and manly or are they going to offer a Perez Hilton type homosexual superhero?
