Catholic college drops health plan over contraception mandate | Reuters

(Reuters) - A small Catholic college in Ohio said Tuesday it was dropping health insurance coverage for students rather than comply with a federal mandate that the plan provide free birth control.
The Franciscan University of Steubenville "will not participate in a plan that requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life," according to a bulletin to students posted on the university's website.
Not only will the university drop its own plan, but it will no longer require its undergraduates to carry insurance, the bulletin said. "We didn't want to put them in a situation where they would have to violate their conscience," said Michael Hernon, a vice president at Franciscan University.

Private schools are allowed to do that....If someone does not like it they should go to a public university........

Georgetown and others might do the same thing.

They have the right to do it but to me it is selfish and silly. No one is forcing anyone to use birth control. No one is forcing them to do anything they do not believe in. It is only giving those who may need it the option.

Exactly. The only people who would be violating their beliefs are those choosing to do so.

Kids who still go to these schools no matter what and they want to be on contraceptives are going to do it anyways...

What's silly, is passing a law that forces someone to go against their beliefs. In fact, it's not only silly, but it tyrannical.

It is not forcing them to do anything. That is the point. My healthcare covers lots of things but I have the choice whether or not to use them.

How about banning something for other people because it goes against my beliefs? Is that silly?

And who gets to decide which sets of beliefs are acceptable and which aren't? What if it's against my beliefs to wear clothing when I shop for groceries?

…and forcing those who have moral objections to it to pay for it.

The students pay into the health insurance plan like any other health insurance plan. Any student can opt out.

Ok - shoveling aside the heaps of loathing I have for religion and so forth. . . .some common sense:

If Congress isn't allowed to dictate regulations that impose on a religion unfairly (in this case - the Catholic Church)
Then why are they going forward as fi this actually affects them?

I thought - though it annoys the dickens out of me - that religious faiths would be exempt from Congressional means of 'pursuing' or 'embracing' - well - anything that violates their view.

Do we REALLY need this part of things to go to the Supreme Court and end up saying what we already know; that Congress cannot compel a religion to follow through with something they already don't agree with?

As long as you are providing the service and paying for a large portion of it, I would have no problem with that. Do you?

And who gets to decide which sets of beliefs are acceptable and which aren't? What if it's against my beliefs to wear clothing when I shop for groceries?

Then start your own store that is clothing optional. Then you are free to practice your beliefs however you wish. I only have a problem with it when you are forcing others to start and pay for a store that will cater to your clothing optional shopping experience.

See: Same-sex marriage bans, anti-contraceptive laws, anti-abortion laws, that bull**** where I can't buy beer on sunday mornings.

Nobody is forcing this university to have a health insurance plan, nobody is forcing students to pay into that health plan, and nobody is forcing anyone to actually use birth control.

Sure it is. Who did that? No one is being forced to attend private Catholic universities. Don't like the policies of these schools? Go to college somewhere else. It's just that simple.

See: gun control laws, anti-junk food laws, anti-smoking laws.

Sucks when your own tactics are used against you. Huh?

Welcome to ****ing society and civilization, where sometimes you're tax dollars aren't used for things you'd like. What if used the same argument for those with a moral objection to the war in Iraq or the current one in Afghanistan? Or a moral objection to literally everything.

In fact I just developed a strong moral objection to literally everything the government does, therefore I should pay no taxes.

No one is forcing them to pay for BC and they aren't. Everybody wins.

I'm an owner of a business and have a moral connection to the philosophy of Darwinism, therefore its against my morals to provide any healthcare to my employees at all and I want to be exempt from any of it. The profits I'll inevitably reap are just proof of my moral superiority under my philosophy.

Damn I love moral ambiguity, why can't we base more government decisions and laws based on it? O ya because its ****ing insane

Settle down. No one is banning BC.

Some health insurance policies cover more than others. What's so horrible about selling a policy that doesn't cover BC?

Good. I hope they lose students and any Federal grants they receive.

The federal mandate on contraception is stupid and illogical. Let them drop, I support their right to protest and stand up for their beliefs (especially against a stupid policy).
