and some people wonder why drug legalisation ain't happening despite the known costs to taxpayers of the present system

Louisiana is the world's prison capital

Louisiana is the world's prison capital. The state imprisons more of its people, per head, than any of its U.S. counterparts. First among Americans means first in the world. Louisiana's incarceration rate is nearly triple Iran's, seven times China's and 10 times Germany's.

The hidden engine behind the state's well-oiled prison machine is cold, hard cash. A majority of Louisiana inmates are housed in for-profit facilities, which must be supplied with a constant influx of human beings or a $182 million industry will go bankrupt.

Several homegrown private prison companies command a slice of the market. But in a uniquely Louisiana twist, most prison entrepreneurs are rural sheriffs

It's what happens when there is a fiscal incentive to jail folks.

Not to mention the 4 federal prisons in the Beaumont area.

Yeah, privatizing prisons is a big Republican thing these days. They're trying to expand them in Florida, too. Lots of lobbying dollars being spread around.

Yeah. That's it. The congress of the United States refuses to de-criminalize Marijuana because they are all in the pockets of the Big Louisiana Sheriff Industry.

Lots of bad people doing bad things. We need more prisons.

Bull****...

Really, you know what we need? a huge prison to lock up all you freakin liberals. Build a 50 foot fence around L.A. with guard towers every 250 yards. Put 50 caliber machine guns in those towers with mine fields and rows of constantina wire along the fence. What do you think about that? bull****?

So much for that 1st Amendment dealy, eh?

I think your love of authoritarinism and blatant hatred of those who don't agree with you is rather obvious and predictable. There are many countries that would fit you much better than America.

If Louisiana is the prison capitol of the world why isn't Sen. David "Diapers" Vitter in jail?

Why only liberals? Why not every stinkin' one of these mammalian abortions that dare call themselves "human". What, you're gonna' let some Vampire off the hook because he can pronounce one more syllable? Kill every freakin' one of them.

Just my luck to be born in the least respected planet in the whole stinkin' galaxy.

I bet this is one of those important issues, that actually effect people's lives, where the left and right see eye to eye on (example: Democrat, Republican Party, Libertarian, Green Parties all love for-profit jails)

And then Kurt Russell has to go in and save the Presidents daughter right?

This is so wrong it hurts. I have no problem privatizing prisons, but they can't be done on a head count basis. We would get better results if the prison's metrics were measuring reformed prisoners.

No.

It's because they're in the pockets of those who build and maintain the jails, and get government contracts for doing so.

And the prison guard unions. More people being jailed means more people that need to be hired to guard them. Which means job security for them.

And in the pockets of the judges who hear such cases.

And it's nationwide - not just in Louisiana.

Lots of bad people doing bad things. We need more prisons.

Except that people doing recreational drugs at home when they don't have any dependents to be responsible for doesn't make them a bad person, nor that they're doing a bad thing.

We don't need more prisons. Rather, we need to decriminalize all the stupid **** that we put in prison for and focus on imprisoning in the prisons we have now all the hardcore sociopaths that little bull**** like dope users distracts them from.

How long has this been going on? Privatizing prisons? I saw a movie about this several years ago, and remembered even then that this would be a terrible idea, such a huge opportunity for corruption.

Free speech has consequences...right? Isn't that the line we constantly hear from the Libobs?

In Lousisiana, prisons aren't for those who are politically connected. Vitter can literally get away with murder if he wants to. Prisons there are for poor folks who get caught jaywalking or littering. LOL.

This summary from Wiki should help. Its been going on for at least 30 years. It's a real growth industry. Of course, the states own many prisons and contract out the management as well, so there's more than the article explains.

Private prisons in the United States today
Private companies in the United States operate 264 correctional facilities, housing almost 99,000 adult convicts.[11] Companies operating such facilities include the Corrections Corporation of America, the GEO Group, Inc, and Community Education Centers. The GEO Group was formerly known as Wackenhut Securities.
Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) has a capacity of more than 80,000 beds in 65 correctional facilities. The GEO Group operates 61 facilities with a capacity of 49,000 offender beds,[12]
Most privately run facilities are located in the southern and western portions of the United States and include both state and federal offenders.[11]
