A few days after the “Toughest Sheriff in America” oversaw his 60th Latino-harassing raid in the Phoenix area, the Obama administration’s top civil-rights lawyer flew to Phoenix and slappedSheriff Joe Arpaio and his office with a monumental civil-rights tort alleging rampant constitutional abuses, including widespread racial profiling of Latinos. The suit also claims the sheriff violated the civil rights of his critics by “illegal retaliation” that included baseless lawsuits and meritless administrative actions.

All of its alleged. So until a jury says otherwise its all just hearsay.

I dont think they are even looking for a conviction this is to solidify the latino vote...I disagree with this...I think is govt over reach

People don't understand that. Someone can be alleged of doing anything, until they are tried and convicted in a court of law, they are innocent.

It seems 95% of the population doesn't realize that.

More BS.

So many people seem to get their panties in a knot over profiling. Heres an idea people, if you really don't like "racial" profiling, the simple solution is make it not work. Perhaps, I don't know, say help the police catch criminals in your community istead of harrassing them when they try to. The reason "racial" profiling keeps popping up is because it is an effective tool for police. If the communities that may end up being profiled worked together and with police to clean up criminals in their communities, then "racial" profiling will eventually disapear because it won't work anymore and then only truely racists officers will use it.

I have no problem with his enforcement of laws, in fact, I would very much welcome someone like him in my own county. All law enforcement officers, regardless of the level they are hired at should enforce all laws, not just the ones at their level. In all other areas of law enforcement, the Feds have few problem seeking and receiving help from local law enforcement. I doubt very much if a local officer arrests a peson from the FBI's most wanted list who didn't commit any crimes locally is going to be censured and disciplined for doing so, but if they run accross an illegal immigrant, all hell breaks lose if the local officer acts. This is just plain stupid, entering the US without proper documentation and authorization is a crime.

All Illegal Immigrants are criminals, even if they commit no other crime, they have commited a criminal act by illegally entering the US. All Law Enforcement personnel and agencies have the responsibility to Enforce Laws, all laws. In Arizona, it would be impossible to enforce immigration laws without it being very heavily biased towards Hispanics. Some call it racial profiling because it is heavily biased towards Hispanics, but, except for a few Chinese and other Asians that come in through California, pretty much all of the arrest of illegal immigrants are going to be Hispanic in Arizona.

People like to prejudge and they know it. Gets the job done even if they never bring it to trial. A lot of people are biased and a lot more are just idiots.

Yes, it is BS. The fact is, Arizona has a massive problem with illegal immigration from Mexico. The overwhelming majority of illegal aliens are hispanic. How is going after the group that is responsible for the majority of criminals profiling? There are areas where they have massive problems with black gangs or hispanic gangs or asian gangs, how is it wrong, when looking for gang-related crime, to go after those groups? Oh no, we'd better be pulling over whites on the highway, even though we know they're not in the targetted gangs, because we can't profile!

It's really idiotic. Go after the criminals. If the criminals are almost entirely from one group, then go after that group. I don't care if that group is black or white, male or female, young or old. Just go get them!

Good. The guy's been a walking civil rights violation for decades, and he's been nothing but a useless money sucking windbag for the community he allegedly serves. He's already cost his state millions of dollars in damages related to civil rights abuses and other related torts. So from that perspective this is nothing new, just a large scale.

And yet...he keeps getting re-elected to his Office.

Perhaps the Feds should listen to the People of Texas...and not their liberal political agenda.

Texas? ...........

Being legally innocent is not the same as being actually innocent.

If I murder someone, I am guilty from the moment I murder them even though I am PRESUMED innocent until I am convicted.

Some of the allegations in that article are egregious.

Let's let the court decide. If they decide in MCSO favor, will you accept the verdict and admit your opinion was wrong.. If the courts finds Arpaio guilty, I will accept the verdict.

Seems by the local tv news, one of the reasons its going to court is MCSO asked for specifics (evidence) to the alleged wrongdoings. DOJ, would not provide it. I would also say, see you in court.

That's an indication of nothing. Playing to nativism in order to win over the majority doesn't mean it's right!

Or perhaps it is simply a sign that Arizona citizens are sick and tired of little to nothing serious being done to stem the inflow of illegal immigrants. If you agree with the Sheriff's actions or not we have a real problem with illegal immigrants in AZ and I believe its citizens want something done even if those actions are not always pretty or perhaps even legal.

If law enforcement isn't following the law that's a serious problem. It doesn't matter what the situation is.

If the U.S. government is going to refuse to do their duty and control illegal immigration, then the states have no choice but to take steps on their own. Both Obama and Bush refused to do a damn thing about it, they're trying to buy votes, all the while millions of illegal aliens are invading the country from the south. I'm all in favor of Brewer and Arpaio doing whatever it takes to stem the tide. After all, isn't that what Arpaio is being paid to do? Defend the law and hold people accountable who break it?

There are many specifics in the complaint. Here's one.

73. In another raid, a U.S.-born Latina was taken into custody for four hours to determine whether she was lawfully in the United States. In response to media inquiries about this incident, Arpaio was quoted as saying: “That’s just normal police work. You sometimes take people in for probable cause for questioning and they’re released.” The only cause for her arrest was that she was Latina and on-site during a raid, reasons insufficient to provide probable cause for the detention.

Do you have your papers?

Do you have your papers?

The example you give is incomplete. It is an alleged complaint. Where is the proof that the only reason for her arrest was Latina? That is an unproven statement. So why did DOJ refuse to provide that info to MCSO? What the complaint doesn't show is what lead MCSO to think she was an illegal. No drivers/ID issued by the State? False/improper SSN given to the officers? There is more to the story than what is provided by your link

Do I have my papers? Legal immigrants/aliens have to carry papers that they are in the country legally. It is a federal law. Illegal aliens would not have such proof since they are here illegally.

So this person could not come up with a AZ driver license/ID or a SSN? When at work don't you have your wallet with such items in it?

I am a US citizen. If arrested for some legal reason, a check would show that. How about you?

All people who cross the border and enter the US illegally are criminals. Obama and company swore to uphold the laws of the land. They don't. Arizona passes a near identical law, Sheriff Joe enforces it. Holder sues per Barry's orders.

Joe will win this one. Probably after the election

Actually he's saved the "county" millions of dollars and it is you pro-slavery cheap foreign labor lovers who cost the "county" millions of dollars in court abuse.

I think there is a big problem in AZ and the sheriff is doing what needs done. However, I also think this "all of a sudden" concern by the Obama administration is because it's time to vote soon again and the ONLY reason this was done.
