Excellent article. Come up with your deductions.

WASHINGTON — In a single week last April, 3 people were killed with guns in Philadelphia, 14 more were shot and wounded, 68 robberies were carried out at gunpoint and a total of 144 crimes involving firearms were reported.During that same week in San Diego, a city of roughly the same size with far fewer police officers, there were no gun-related homicides, 2 people wounded by gunshots, 4 robberies committed at gunpoint and a total of only 20 gun-related crimes. What made the difference?

Coming two months after the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Florida, the wide-ranging discussion encompassed the proliferation of laws that make it easier to own, carry and use a gun; the role of gangs and narcotics; the characteristics of perpetrators and victims; and the need for more aggressive prosecution and greater investment in technology to trace and identify firearms.
If there was a central message to be drawn from the survey, it was that gun violence is tightly concentrated in the poorest urban neighborhoods, its victims mostly minorities, who receive little attention from politicians and the news media.

“Nobody in this room, unless you’re from Sanford, Fla., would even know the name of Trayvon Martin if it was a black kid that had shot Trayvon Martin,” said Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey of Philadelphia, who is African-American.
“It happens every single day in Philadelphia. It happens every single day in cities across the country, but if it’s a black killing a black,” no one cares, Commissioner Ramsey continued, noting that the week studied by the forum was less violent than many other weeks in Philadelphia. “Our streets are bleeding, and they’re bleeding profusely.”

I think it is great that the black community is talking about a major issue inside their community. I am not sure Rev. Al will be running down there though to make an announcement.

This is, at it's core, an economic problem. The racial disparaties are largely consequential, not causal. All long a America continues it's infatuation with race, I don't see you making any kind of headway.

Straw purchasing, in which a proxy buys guns for convicted felons, is another problem, participants said. Chief Art Acevedo of Austin said his officers regularly observed women buying as many as 30 guns, including semiautomatic weapons, at gun shows and then passing them on to men.

First, I would like to see some documentation of this. If there are 30 guns purchased at once, the ATF would have a record of it.
Secondly, if the officers are observing this, then why are they allowing it to happen?

The entire comment smacks of hyperbole.

The truth is police know the truth...but some people are so unreasonable in their quest for what they want...they exclude all other opinions or facts...

Its incomprehensible to some that anyone could say that crime in all black neighborhoods is far more prevalent than in white neighborhoods without them being LABELED a racist...but its the truth and theres NON racial reasons for it....its the poverty factor stupid...its the unemployment numbers stupid...
When you have scores of young men out of work with nothing but Idle time and empty pockets...what else would you expect ?...theres many more NON racist reasons...but some wont even accept it.....if you dont SAY IT LIKE IT IS...how can you ever fix it... The chief are utterly totally correct to bring out this issue

So, compare and contrast: How is San Diego like Philadelphia? How is it different?

Is it really a black/white thing? How "white" is San Diego, really?

Seems to me that gangs might have something to do with it, but that could be wrong, too.

Not if the purchaser bought a few guns each from various "non-dealers".

I think they're discussing things with a false notion before the discussion even begins

1) Zimmerman was not white - he was also race-minority.

2) Trayvon's mother and supporting members of the family made a huge difference in how the media responded - I think her words and her face after the incident stirred widespread support.

3) I think the media plays less and less a part of how such messages/videos (IE: her comments immediately after his death) circulate the net. I learn about many things - including this - long before i might watch the news. . . it takes days for something to hit widespread media but mere minutes for it to spread through forums (etc). . . the internet has very different pathways for information.

4) The facts were very hidden / obscure / skewed in the beginning - all we first heard was that a little kid with candy and ice team (IE: age 13 in his picture that was released) was killed by some thug - who was just let go and not held for killing a child. Lack of adequate police response and gathered information created this entire scenario. Honestly - you couldn't create a better false story to fool the whole nation if you tried harder.

I do not think - at all - that this case is reflective of a 'crime ridden society' at all. I wish they didn't use this as the case to refer to when discussing these topics.

which is already illegal since someone selling guns as a "non dealer" is most likely violating federal law

Thats the whole point ditto...it is the same...take an all white neighborhood, put in all the ingredients that make for a high crime black neighborhood and you get the same RESULTS...crime is not a RACE driven event in itself....
Heres some facts...there are few all white neighborhoods left in inner cities...number 1....black neighborhoods are far poorer than white neighborhoods.
and none of us can deny that.
People like to put labels on crime...there is none...crime is driven by environmental and economics..peer pressure everytime you walk out your door...IDLENESS remember its the devils workshop TRUE!!!....poor people, uneducated, have wants and desires...they see what others have on TV...just like you or I....and IN THEIR MIND they have no other way of getting it except to steal it...or sell something illicit to buy it...I know all the excuses for that...GET A JOB...no one will hire them for anything less than peanuts if even that....some want to achieve, want to get ahead and cant...they cant get a break period...now i know everyone is going to come out of the woodwork and say there govt this and that...that doesnt overide ignorance hoplelessness and PEER Pressure...these kids dont get out of their teens without huge rap sheets...that stops them cold for alot of opportunities.

Is there a study or data that you used for this?

Says the guy from New Jersey. LOL.

But I really won't deny that statement.

Yeah, I know from measurement. I've been on both sides, and I will be looking to get back west ASAP. The East is terrible, full of terrible people and terrible things and terrible weather. I wish we could chop it off, clone the West, and stick it on the East. Boarded on both sides by California? Hell ya!

Plenty and you can go find them, im not....the rest is based on a lifetime of personal upfront knowledge

Amazing...lol....so silly its only worth a giggle

I'm sorry, this is measured fact. All places have their assholes, but the East sets the bar. Biggest assholes in the country.

Lifelong San Diegan.

Pretty racially mixed town overall, but there are definitely black, latino, asian, white neighborhoods.

Its a military town, I was raised in a navy neighborhood. Kids of every color at our school. I think the military kind of "dilutes" racism through simple exposure.

But more importantly its a beautiful town with awesome weather. Its also all sprawled out, so everybody isn't piled on top of each other. Abundant cheap pot may also be a factor.

Its hard to hate life here. Expensive as hell, but even the homeless have it better than elsewhere. They never freeze to death here.

I used to make fun of California when living in Colorado. Then I moved out East.

Look..Lmao...this is one of the silliest childish lines of rap ive seen on this forum...seriously guys....east coast is all assholes...the west coast are all great...ROFLMAO....listen...california is consider a toilet bowl by 80% of the country people are FLOCKING out of california...its a cess pool of crime and illegal immigration and drug cartels...and so is the east...to make that childish uninformed absurd statement is just laughable.
Heres the truth...there is very little difference...between LA and NYC....

And Oakland is like Philadelphia. But there's no New Jersey equivalent out West; so they win.
