Man Booked in Hammer Deaths of Vegas Mom, Child

Using a hammer as a weapon, a "complete stranger" with no significant criminal history allegedly chose a family at random and attacked them in their home, killing a woman and her daughter, in a brutal crime that left investigators both baffled and aghast.

Bryan Clay, 22, was arrested Friday in the April 15 rape and bludgeoning deaths of 38-year-old Ignacia Martinez and 10-year-old Karla Martinez. He had no connection to the family of five, Lt. Ray Steiber said Saturday.

"This was a complete stranger killing a mother and daughter and attacking the father," Steiber told The Associated Press. "I've been doing this (police work) 24 years, and you don't see cases like this. I can't even put this into words."

Police were notified about the case when a 9-year-old boy, who was not injured by the attacker, came to school the next day and informed a counselor that his mom and sister were dead.

Nothing was taken from the house, and investigators were unsure of the motive for the attack.

"There's no rhyme or reason to why (it happened)," he said, adding Clay doesn't have a "significant" criminal history.

Clay also was booked in the beating and rape of a 50-year-old woman in the same west Las Vegas neighborhood hours before the slayings.

Steiber said he didn't know why the two boys, 9 and 4, were spared in the home invasion attack.

continued....

This story makes NO sense to me at all..

Why were the two boys still in the home for 24 hours??

Lunatics happen, and they don't need sophisticated weapons to cause tragedy.

If he had no significant criminal history, and no recorded issues of severe mental illness known, there isn't much that could have stopped this from happening.... unless the victims themselves could have been prepared to stop him.

Very tragic incident, but fortunatly in a nation of 300 million-plus such things are statistically rare.

I wonder if incidents like this make anyone think of the "muckers" (amok-ers) from "Stand on Zanzibar"?

So tragic - made me sick to my stomach to read.

Wh were they still in the home? After bludgeoning two people to death why would the killer call chid protective services? Obviously - no one knew they were there and they are young children, the 9 yr old likely experienced traumatic emotional shock and might never be the same after this.

Truely heinous.

A 9 year old is capable of calling 911 or a neighbor..

And yes.. the survivors are no doubt horribly traumatised.

Please do not pretend that a 9yr old in this horrific situation - after seeing what he saw and hearing what he heard - will be thinking 'normally' - I know adults who couldn't function after such a horrific incident. . . do not undercut this poor child and turn him into some sort of failure because he didn't think to call 911. I think he's gone through quite enough.

He thought to go to school and tell someone - isn't that good enough for you?

Fair enough............

Good enough for me?

I am not sure where you come up with that..

I feel very sorry the children spent 24 hours in the house with dead bodies and an injured father.

No one can predict with any degree of certainty how they would react in this very arcane situation. The fact that the 9 year old had the wherewithal to go to school and report this is amazing.

*facepalm*

Babe - you were puzzled by the fact that this 9yr old didn't call 911  You were blank over how they were home for 24 hours before anyone found out - but didn't take pause to question just what the **** happened to this psycho douche to drive him to kill people like that.

Your inner debater is focusing on the WRONG issues here.

yes - absolutely amazing. Good for him.

And I'm glad they took him seriously, too - and checked into it. Doesn't always happen like that when kids do the right thing.

They caught the cruddy psycho.. and yes most children can call 911 by age 5.............

Gesus - just what IS your damn problem? So a 9 yr old child didn't do what you THINK he should have been capable of doing . . . goddamn!

Well maybe this kid didn't have a phone.

Maybe no one taught him how to dial 911

Maybe he has developmental delays

HOLY ****!

How about a 9-year-old in shock. For the sake of this discussion, let's use a hypothetical. I will turn back the clock to your childhood, and brutally murder your parents; I am sure you'd be in shock. A child processes such carnage differently than an adult.

...you're dreadfully incorrect. Give us evidence or recant that crude statement.

Do you have any children? In the real modern world.. most 4 year olds can dial 911.. and frequently do..

And yes, they could certainly have been in shock and probably still are.

I just find it extremely sad that they spent 24 hours alone in that house with two dead bodies and a seriously injured father.

Didn't you just say most 5-year-olds? See, this is what happens when you don't provide evidence to critical statements. You just contradicted yourself yet again; you now say most 4-year-olds can dial 911, yet you also say they could certainly have been in shock and probably still are. Which is it in this instance? Provide proof to your statement about 4-year-olds calling 911; otherwise your post holds no water. Me having children has no bearing on this discussion.

Sick.

Did the article say he was out on bail from the attack on the "50 year old woman"?

Please don't turn this into one of those Zimmerman threads.

I think the original question was odd that the 9 yr old didn't call 911. Most 9 yrs old I believe would have called 911. The act that the kid actually went to school the next day is the most oddest thing here.
I agree the kid went through a horrofic event that he will never forget. But sometimes you see kids who act more rational than adults in emergency situations.

I think people here believe they are in one of the Zimmerman threads by the tone and language.

What the heck? It does say he was booked for beating and raping a 50yr old hours before slaying. And they let him go?

Once I had a 2 year old dial 911 from behind the sofa while I was clearing up the dinner dishes.. 911 called me back and asked if there was a problem... there wasn't.

Happens all the time.

Your children and my grands are very savvy about technology. Its second nature to them.

People do not see themselves as inherently evil. That is, they don’t claim to commit heinous atrocities against fellow man for the pure joy of it. They always have some bull**** rationale. Every rapist, shooter, armed robber, murderer, wife beater and petty thief all rationalized their behavior.

They all paint themselves as the victims, every single one of them, and I’ve met quite a few

The crimes they commit don’t change, only the reasons each gives to explain away his/her transgressions change

You NEVER know what's behind a smile and a handshake.

Believe this: There are real monsters among us.

What you refer to is a poorly written sentence by the reporter. Apparently the rape of the 50 year old occured a few hours before the hammer crime. But he was not "booked" before the hammer crime. He was presumably booked for both at about the same time.

You simply have no idea what you're talking about here. You cannot equate the actions of a child innocently calling 911 who has not suffered from any trauma to that of a child who has just suffered a deeply traumatic event.

Trauma can cause each individual to react differently. I've witnessed this numerous times whilst working as a paramedic.
