Panetta: 'We're within an inch of war almost every day' - CNN.com

Brussels, Belgium (CNN) -- The United States is prepared for "any contingency" when it comes to dealing with North Korea, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta told CNN.

"We're within an inch of war almost every day in that part of the world, and we just have to be very careful about what we say and what we do," Panetta said Wednesday on "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer."

WHY? Why are we so tied up and concerned with NK?

Here's an idea...let's leave them alone.

The USofA should not be on the brink of war with any country on a daily basis for months/years on end.

Again, this comes back to defense of USofA, or a militaristic USofA.

South Korea is not a part of the USofA. It's not the 52nd state.

We should not be starting a war with NK.

I am not in strong favor of war with NK, but something has to be done at some point.

A war with NK would cost a million lives (including all sides) because containment wouldn't be an option. An all out invasion and nation building would be required. We wouldn't be able to use nukes as well due to proximity with China.

Not something I would like to see in my lifetime.

NK is China's misbehaving attack dog. it's up to China to reign it in; if it doesn't, it's exceptionally bad for business. our involvement absolves China of some of its responsibility. we should not be involved.

but we have invested so much in all of these military toys
and if we do not expend them then we will not have to buy some more

let china deal with nk

its not just about south korea.
its about japan and australia too.
theyre all our friends,
and theyre all within range of
the most unpredictable nation on earth.

and if china was interested in reigning in NK,
it would be done by now.

We're not going to start a war with North Korea. North Korea is going to start a war with us.

An explosion of hostilities on the peninsula could mean an explosion of hostilities all over Asia. Hence the reason for our forces emplaced to act as a deterrent.

It's not our battle.

Let the UN handle it.

We are not the world's police force.

NK will attack the USofA? How?

Boots on the ground invasion?
Air attack on US city?

How will NK start the war with the USofA? In your opinion?

its too late.
we cant pretend we didnt take responsibility for japan after ww2,
or south korea after the korean war.

and yes we are the worlds police force.
the UN cant deal with security problems.
especially while china holds veto powers,
and obviously doesnt care what NK does.

Code:
If North Korea attacked any of our allies in the area, we are bound by treaty to aid in their defense. Because they are in fact "allies".

If North Korea attacked China, we would not respond because they are not our ally. We would probably respond with a UN force, but not alone.

Obviously China is not handling them. NK getting a nuke or strengthening their long range missile capabilities is a danger to the United States and our allies. If NK keeps going the way they are, and nothing else works (which we are running out of options) then the US hand will be forced.

That isnt even beginning to address the massive humanitarian issues over there. It is irresponsible for the US, and other countries to sit back and allow millions to starve and be repressed to the extent the NKoreans are. It is amazing how many people in the United States feel like the rich and powerful have a responsibility to help the poor but that sentiment ends at our own borders. Its hypocritical in my opinion.

of course we are. North Korea is such a major threat to us and all /sarcasm

North Korea aint gonna do ****. They rely on aid from China, US, and South Korea. If they attacked the South the war would be over within months... All food aid would be cut off and they would be ****ed. Hell do they even have enough oil and gas to deal with the military especially in a war situation?

That knife of hypocrisy cuts both ways.

Are you saying I am a hypocrite? I am not sure I follow.

Nope, not saying that at all. I am saying that the hypocrisy of intervening in other countries for humanitarian reasons yet letting our own people starve... And the example that you gave of feeding the masses yet doing nothing about humanitarian issues overseas.

Sorry I did not explain further. I'm hacking this out on my phone, and I was lazy.

I understand. Sorry. I misunderstood. Lot of people on attack on this website so i read that as defensively. I apologize for that.

A NK war would potentially involve major nations we are economically linked to South Korea, China and Japan. Our fragile economic situation is quite vulnerable to going into a tailspin from that kind of shock. Whether you like it or not, Globalization means that the U.S. is dependent of the actions of other nations. Sticking you head in the sand is no better than engaging in pointless conflicts.

Do you honestly think they're building and testing those rockets to put a satellite in space when China could do it for them at a third the cost and no loss of goodwill?

North Korea is socialist morons, of course they are our natural enemy. But then again, most of the "poor" of our own country are socialistic morons. Amazing how that works, socialistic believes equals poor. We shouldn't be giving "humanitarian" aide to any socialists, ours or anybody elses, since socialism is a inhumane ideal. The only real difference between the socialist starving poor in NK and the socialist starving poor here is that in NK, the people are not given any other choice, where as here, our socialist starving poor are starving poor as the result of their own decisions and choices, including the support of socialistic stupidity, not lack of oportunity.

South Korea is an ally that we have made defence commitments with. We should always meet our obligations under treaties with other countries. Wake up people, America cannot exist in an isolationist vacuum. Ours and everyone elses economic future is entertwined and is no longer seperable. That means that at times, we must use our military forces to protect our interests and our allies which we cannot do soley from domestic basing.

If it wasn't so tragic, it would be funny, those of you crying about supporting and providing aide to only those who chose to get born in the US instead of chosing to be born elsewhere. What a self-centered load of crap, every person, whether US or elsewhere deserves the same opportunities and freedoms that America has, no one choses to be born into socialist slavery in NK. People don't chose where they are born. In NK, they are given no choice, however in America there are some Americans seem to think that the very philoshies that destroy NK to point of needing Humanitarian aide should be adopted here, but, hey, we're Americans, so that same BS won't have the same result here. What a truely great place America really would be if everyone of you socialism loving Liberals just packed up and moved to someplace else that already has your desired level of socialism and left those of use who believe in self-determination and presonal responsibility alone.

What possible benefit would a war between the US and North Korea be to anyone? To us or the North Koreans? Even the demonstrably insane Kim Jong Il wasn't crazy enough to start a war. I don't think anyone right now is dumb enough to see any way to come out better off for such a conflict. And that includes fighting between the North and South Koreans.

We would rid mankind of some socialist, that is a very good benefit.
