UN Toughens Sanctions On North Korea

The trouble in North Korea continues to mount. It is interesting that China has joined in condemning the missile launch. I am curious how this will effect the current leadership.


"The United Nations Security Council tightened sanctions Monday on North Korea over its failed rocket launch, threatening further action should the country conduct a nuclear test. The full 15-member council, including the North’s chief ally China, “strongly condemned” the rocket launch and directed its sanctions committee to “designate additional groups and items subjected to the arms and technology embargoes and other restrictions.”

According to Janes Defense Weekly, China violated UN Security Council resolution 1874 by supplying NK with the mobile long range missile launcher used in their massive military parade over the past weekend. The long range missile that they were testing is designed to launch from a mobile launcher and is being developed to reach the continental US. China "strongly condemned" the launch while insuring the NKs had what they needed to make the launch.

This was also predictable: Talk of conducting further atomic tests.

North Korea won’t be bullied by its nuclear-armed enemies, third-generation dictator Kim Jong Un said in his first public address at a military parade as South Korea warned that his regime may conduct an atomic test. Dressed in a dark Mao suit and standing on a podium high above Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang yesterday, the new leader said, “the days of enemies threatening and blackmailing us with nuclear weapons are forever over.” Goose-stepping soldiers, mobile rocket launchers and tanks rumbled through the streets below in a celebration broadcast on state television.

North Korea Kim Says His Regime Can’t Be Blackmailed

It appears that North Korea truly needed the aid and launched in spite of how it would effect it's people. Now North Korea wants to go back to "status quo ante".

"A spokesman for North Korea's Foreign Ministry has accused the U.S. of "overt acts of enmity" after the suspension of a nuclear deal between the countries. In a statement released late Tuesday through state media, the spokesman warned that North Korea will take countermeasures following the breakdown of the deal, in which the U.S. agreed to provide much-needed food aid in exchange for a moratorium on the North's nuclear and missile activity."
