Trayvon Martin's mother Sybrina Fulton is seeking to trademark phrases with her son's name.
According to applications filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by the family's attorney last week, Fulton wants to trademark "I am Trayvon" and "Justice for Trayvon" for use in DVDs and CDs memorializing the slain teenager.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

It depends on how they use it. Plenty of parents who lose children in various ways start organizations in their name and I imagine trademark the name. It's also possible that other people are profiting from his name and they want to prevent that. Time will tell whether this is for good or bad.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

If all the profits go to charity or non-profit organizations I would be ok with this. However, if they try to rake in the cash for themselves, that is disgusting beyond belief.

Me neither. Just saw it on the news feed and thought about posting it. Glad you did.

On the one hand, I see it as a cha-ching moment and wonder how this family can possibly be thinking about cashing in on their son's tragedy. Even in the midst of this whirlwind of controversy.

On the other, I suspect their attorney suggested it -- as I don't see a family in this situation coming up with that idea right about now.

It feels inappropriate to reply in this way, but I immediately thought of Spartacus.

Yeah, I smell lawyer. But it might not be a bad idea, if for no other reason than stopping someone else getting hold of it. There that "black panther" group trying to raise money off of this already.

Zimmerman is NOT wealthy and the full force of goverment, media and mass prejudices put against him.

His lawyer should BEG Zimmerman to make a book deal that a 3rd party writes communicating through Z's lawyer so none of it is quotable as his words in court.

Why? They will incur expenses. Why not earn money to cover them.

I just read it on yahoo too. At first, I thought "oh no!"...but then I thought maybe they are doing it to protect his name since it's being bandied about and used for specific agendas with different parties of people. Right now...I'm not sure what to think. So the best thing to do is wait and see?

Zimmerman should not be able to earn anything from this story. Nothing.

I'd hate to think of you serving on a jury. Please try to get out of it if you're ever called; your mind is too closed.

Oh so zimmerman kills the kid gets off can't get sued then writes a book and that's ok to you? If he writes a book I hope zimmermans mother is raped and killed for bringing her son into the world.

You are scarey. And I also believe you are black. Your refusal to be anywhere NEAR fair in this issue smacks of racism. This particular comment? You've lost it, Kenvin. Time to step away from the computer and drop your mouse.

I am not alone zimmerman will pay.

I often agree with the guy who wrote this:

"...As soon as the Trayvon case gained national attention opportunists across the country started printing t-shirts, signs and other little goodies with Trayvon’s name on them. Some simply said “I am Trayvon.” Some t-shirts were vile – with pictures of Trayvon over printed racial insults. One “entrepreneur” announced plans for a collection of Trayvon hoodies.

Now put yourself in the place of Trayvon’s mother. She sees people across the country using her dead child’s name to make money and deliver messages, some of which she may not necessarily agree with. What does she do? She says something about it to her lawyer. Her lawyer tells her that she can protect her son’s name by filing for trademark protection. So she does. Is there a problem with this? If so --- please tell me what that problem is. If I had been her lawyer I would have given her the same advice.

Oh! You say that she also trademarked “I am Trayvon” and “Justice for Trayvon?” So? It was her son. Now she feels she has a cause. Perfectly understandable. Are you going to tell her that she cannot use her son’s name in promoting her cause?"

Excellent take. I completely agree.

No what Zimmerman should do is go back into his little hole and learn that his stupidity helped kill a 17 year old boy.

In all my semi long life I have never heard of a family losing a child and trademarking their name a few short days later. I am extremely suspicious of this not to mention a little saddened. I have to wonder if Sharpton or Jackson had a hand in this.

For those supporting that Zimmerman by killed. Take note, your posts could be evidence used against you in a court of law. Guess you also think OJ verdict was just.
