Dick Cheney receives heart transplant

this was a news report, not commentary.

That doesn't change the facts of anything else I just said. Unless whoever reporting has all of Cheney's health info and medical training then they can't make that kind of decision. The only way they could obtain that information is if Cheney released all of his medical records to the press or if they illegally obtained it. Can you link to the story?

they were reporting the news. obviously, a doctor made the 5-year call.

but yes, I'll look for a story confirming it.

edit: it appears the 5-year part, is based on averages. 75% of male transplant recipients make it another 5 years. 50% make it another 10 years.

though, the averages are lower for folks above 70

I can't believe your callous attitude on this. You may feel different when you are 71. Sheeesh!

Callous because I'm weighing in on reality here? . . . We can't discuss these issues bluntly because someone's old - or because they were the vice president? Why not?

um.....good thing that's not what I did.

That is exactly what you did. You complained that he got the heart over some one else, which is making a medical decision about people you have never met, sitting at your computer at home.

It is callous to so cavalierly suggest someone should just die because they are 71 yes. My dad hiked to the top of Whitney for his 70th birthday. He is now 80 and still rides his Harley, enjoys his margaritas and going to party's. Who are you to say his life should end because he is old.

Who says he was *going* to die?

He had a known heart condition and likely had been on the list for countless years - living with a condition. . . he could have lived without a transplant for another 10 or 20 for all we know. . . after living for 10 or 20 already.

My transplant center has a 100 percent firstl year survival rate. Five years out i think it is better than half.

Nobody gets a heart transplant unless it is absolutely necessary. The risk associated with it such as infection and rejection make this a last ditch effort to stay alive.

I am very disappointed in you young lady.

I'm not: someone else who was younger or had more going for their life was just denied a heart - if he was reasonable he should have said 'no - I'm too old.' You won't see me robbing someone else of such a wonderful thing when I'm waning in my later years.

if other than his heart problems, Cheney is in fine healthy condiction, then I have no problem with him getting this heart.

however, if he or any other elderly person has other chronic serious health issues, then I would prefer the heart go to a younger and/or healthier person.

its called triage. those who have a better channce of living longer & healthier lives get medical preference.

How do you know that?

Who was denied the heart? Since you seem to know exactly how the situatiuon went down, who was it who could have gotten a heart but did not, and why did it go to Cheney?

Oh come on you two - we all know that transplants are on a list - if the first person can't be reached it goes to the next person.

Evidently I think age should be a factor - 71 and the chances of recovery and living another 20 years? I'm just being realistic, here.

So you do not know if Cheney was not the most logical recipient that could be reached and could make it in time. Your arguments are in fact based on guesses and a lack of knowledge of the situation.

Actually I go to a heart transplant center as a patient. And I totally disagree with you. For instance it could have been a sixty year old heart. I don't particulary want a 60 year old heart.

Here are the rules:

No 70+ year old should have any sort of transplant... it is a waste of money and resources.. no wonder the US healthcare industry is so screwed up.. money and influence trumps over logic.

There is no way Cheney even got on a waiting list for a heart at his age and health. He bought that heart out from under some deserving younger person, I would put money on it. It is disgraceful that our system is so easily abused. Money talks and poor people die.

Because your typical liberal has a major issue with insurance companies when they cite pre existing conditions as a reason to deny service.

I am not a liberal, pretty much voting GOP since 1966, and I don't like insurance companies who try to deny PAYMENT for life saving services...
When you have a 7 year old grandchild dx'd with an inoperable brain tumor, and the insurance company tries to claim pre existing conditions, it makes you want to reach out and grab someone, by the throat...

What is disgraceful is that you presume all of this to keep your partisan rancor flowing.
