Dick Cheney receives heart transplant - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

Former Vice President Dick Cheney received a heart transplant on Saturday, his office announced. A statement from the former vice president's office said the 71 year old is now recovering in the intensive care unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., outside Washington.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Vice President Cheney. I disagree with him on almost every issue, but I must say, his sense of humor works for me. Being opposed on politics does not mean we should demonize nor hate those we disagree with.

Hope he has a speedy recovery.

I hope he suffers just a little bit but still recovers then goes on trial.. :2razz:

I don't really think there is such a thing as speedy recover to a heart transplant. There are just so many issues you have to deal with afterwards.
Rejection of new tissue is the main one.
Have known a few transplants and some have done well but it is not a cakewalk.

well seeing his heart record i would give him 2 years before problems occur.

the good news is they have new electric hearts that work better than real ones, the bad news if his battery runs out or he accidentally unplugs himself on the way to the kitchen---------well best not to think about it.

I hope the Vice President recovers and is once again active.

Cheney: I Asked Lynne If It Bugs Her That People Call Me Darth Vader

Vice President Dick Cheney cracked a number of jokes Wednesday night at the Radio & Television Correspondents' Dinner In Washington D.C. Cheney got some laughs when he told the audience that he had asked his wife, Lynne Cheney, whether the label Darth Vader applied to his personality. According to Cheney, his wife said it "humanizes you."

I agree totally, organ transplantation is a wonderful thing. When our eldest daughter died as the result of a traffic accident in 1995 we donated all her vital organs. We know the heart recipient very well, who just happens to be gay and living life to the fullest. Life is the greatest gift you could ever give. Please let your family know what you want in the case of your death. Jennifer sure did, and we are thankful she did.

Everywhere I can put "Organ Donor" (drivers liscence, medical POA, etc), I do. I don't understand those who don't; it costs you nothing and can save lives.

Christ teaches us that the greatest honor is giving of yourself to others. How beautiful that your daughters gift' could give you something like that out of that darkest of tragedies.

I'm an organ donor, too - but the way *some* (emphasis on the some) people talk about it is downright creepy: as if they're just hoping people drop dead so their organs are harvested. . . not in this forum, of course - but I've met some serious weirdos in my day who seem more like leeches than caring individuals.

Not how I expected this thread to go, but am very happy it has gone into donating organs. I think doing so is a very good thing.

It vitally important that you let your family know what you want, just putting it on your drivers licence may not do it.

eh. I would say it still depends. China, for example, I think, does it sort of wrong. Donating your organs is noble and life-saving. Harvesting others organs while they may or may not still need them isn't. :( but demand is high and the Chinese government doesn't really care what happens to the 'Troublemaking" dissident populace.

Very true. Every responsible person should have already hammered out post-mortem plans with their NOK - especially if you have kids. My wife and I agreed to the plan long ago - let the docs take everything they might need, burn the rest, and save the ashes so we can be "buried" together. My parents did the same, and let me know where they want their ashes released.

Thanks for the heads-up Redress. That's the first I've heard about it. :)

I wonder how they got the rattlesnake to sign an organ donor card?

But of course best wishes for a speedy recovery.

We are not in China.

this may well be the first time a donated organ rejected its recipient

No 70+ year old should have any sort of transplant... it is a waste of money and resources.. no wonder the US healthcare industry is so screwed up.. money and influence trumps over logic.
