Klansman Running for Idaho Sheriff

I must have missed the part where he condemned the Klan and apologized for his past. If I was running for political office and had an arrest in my past for ethnic, racial and religious intimidation I'd deny all association with my former colleagues too. lol

Who is distancing himself from his past rather than running on it ala David Duke style:

Contacted by the Observer, he didn’t acknowledge that he used to be in the Klan.

“I am associated with only one group and that is the America Legion,” he said. “Used to be is used to be. Hasn’t got a damn thing to do with today.”

...good luck in the future though. lol

Or you could just run as a republican and use it as a campaign bonus like recalled state senator Russel Pearce instead of being in denial and from another party. lol

Why switch parties to the GOP when all your friends are registered dems?:2razz:

This man actually is a racist. This isn't some msnbc race card BS.

I couldn't believe that segment. Mathews and the commentators in this video are as racist as the clansman. When are people going to own up to the fact that playing the race card is pure racism?

As for the racist clansman running for office, he isn't going to get elected. Get real.

Obviously he's a Democrat. All racists are. Or did I get that backwards? Hard to keep up on these things.

The KKK is a democrat organization. One could say that they were the militant wing of the democrat party.

Ku Klux Klan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Director D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation glorified the original Klan. His film was based on the book and play The Clansman and the book The Leopard's Spots, both by Thomas Dixon, Jr. Dixon said his purpose was "to revolutionize northern sentiment by a presentation of history that would transform every man in my audience into a good Democrat!" The film created a nationwide Klan craze. At the official premier in Atlanta, members of the Klan rode up and down the street in front of the theater.[SUP][71][/SUP]

The KKK is not a former terrorist organization. They are STILL an organization of terrorists.

Are they are still lynching people and burning churches?

If the man belongs to the KKK, he participates in hate crimes. That makes him a crook. Why would anyone let a crook run the police force? Why would anyone let a lunatic run the insane asylum?

Yes, it proves that all Democrats are in fact racist. They all voted for Obama in a vain attempt to prove that they do not hate black people. Truth be told, it was his strong credentials as an Islamist, Communist, Nazi from Kenya that impressed them.

I don't even know what party the guy in Idaho is supposed to belong to. He's in the KKK, he's a racist. If he has a change of heart in a few years, we'll see what that really means and we'll all make our own judgements accordingly (if, in fact, anybody remembers this episode then). I have no doubt that if he is a Republican, the righties on this board will be falling all over themselves to forgive him, and vice versa if he's a Democrat.

As far as race relations go and ties to racism, both parties have plenty in their history to be ashamed of. I'm willing to accept that both parties have moved on and turned over a new leaf in that respect. I guess I'm probably alone in that.

Interesting tack you are taking here.

When declaring the KKK is a democratic party organization you intentionally obfuscate or ignore time passing as if it didn't matter but when one says the KKK is a terrorist organization you defend them by citing how that was back in the day and now they aren't anymore.

I'll accept that they've turned a new leaf once the GOP truly does give up on the Southern Strategy and now the South-west strategy.

Wow, a thread to determine if the Klan is racist.

There will be debate on the subject, with many on the Far Right believing they are a brotherhood of patriotic Americans and any attempt to label them racist is playing the dreaded 'race card'.

Here's a video of Bill Clinton EXPLAINING Robert Byrd's association with the KKK:

Bill Clinton Explains Robert Byrd's Membership In KKK - YouTube

***
"He once had a fleeting association with the Ku Klux Klan, what does that mean? I'll tell you what it means. He was a country boy from the hills and hollows from West Virginia. He was trying to get elected," former President Bill Clinton said of Sen. Robert Byrd.

"And maybe he did something he shouldn't have done come and he spent the rest of his life making it up. And that's what a good person does. There are no perfect people. There are certainly no perfect politicians," he added.

***
Robert Byrd held the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops in the Ku Klux Klan.

In the early 1940s, Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to create a new chapter of the Ku Klux Klan.

Each local chapter, or Klavern, is led by an Exalted Cyclops.

He presides over the Council of the Centaurs.

Writes quarterly reports to the Grand Giant.

In the Klan hierarchy, the Exalted Cyclops reports to:

A Grand Giant, or provincial leader;

A Grand Dragon, or state director;

And the Grand Wizard, or national chair.

Below the Cyclops were:

The Grand Magi,

The Grand Monk,

The Grand Exchequer,

The Grand Turk,

The Exalted Cyclops' responsibilities include presiding over Klavern meetings, initiating new members, and appointing Councils of Centaurs--that's Klan-speak for a jury--to try and punish wayward Ghouls.

In 1944, Byrd wrote to segregationist Mississippi Senator Theodore Bilbo:

"I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

-- Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944,

In 1946 or 1947 Byrd wrote a letter to a Grand Wizard stating,"The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation."

Byrd joined with other Southern and border-state Democrats personally filibustering the bill for to filibuster the Civil Rights Act of 1964,14 hours, a move he later said he regretted. Despite an 83-day filibuster in the Senate, both parties in Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Act, and President Johnson signed the bill into law.

Membership totals are hard to track, because the Klan doesn't willingly release member lists. Over the long term, the KKK is clearly contracting, since its rolls have shrunk from millions in the 1920s to between 3,000 and 5,000 today.

(T)he Ku Klux Klan is losing chapters, according to data released on Wednesday by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The number of KKK chapters dropped from 221 to 152 in just one year.

Former KKK Grand Wizard Don Black in 1995 launched the website Stormfront, which enables individuals in the white supremacist movement to share ideas and read news stories reported from a racist perspective.

Ku Klux Klan in decline: Why did the KKK lose so many chapters in 2010? - Slate Magazine

In August 2008 Black's 19-year-old son Derek was elected to one of 111 seats on the Palm Beach County, Fla., Republican committee, with 167 of 287 votes. The committee has refused to seat Black, citing a loyalty oath he failed to sign before registering his candidacy. The oath states candidates must refrain from activities "likely to injure the name of the Republican Party."

An estimated 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites died at the end of KKK ropes from 1882 to 1964.

Although it is relatively unreported today, historical documents are unequivocal that the Klan was established by Democrats and that the Klan played a prominent role in the Democratic Party," A 13-volume set of congressional investigations from 1872 conclusively and irrefutably documents that fact.

Blacks mostly voted Republican from after the Civil War and through the early part of the 20th century. That's not surprising when one considers that Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president, and the white, segregationist politicians who governed Southern states in those days were Democrats. The Democratic Party didn't welcome blacks then, and it wasn't until 1924 that blacks were even permitted to attend Democratic conventions in any official capacity. Most blacks lived in the South, where they were mostly prevented from voting at all.

***
I'm not a Republican but to those who say racists are welcome in the Republican Party, I haven't found the evidence of that. The KKK was started by the Democrat Party and evidence of that is abundant.

By the way, it's Democratic Party. Those who refer to it as the 'Democrat Party' reveal themselves as partisan Republicans.

and voters will decide if they want him as sheriff. Not saying he should be elected, just that he has a right to run for the position.

It is similar to asking should a person who belongs to a group that is against illegal immigration be allowed to run for sheriff? Yes, its up to the voters to decide if the person gets hired.

I rest my case.

One of the more absurd statements I've read lately.

Yep. And all of those who believe in a strong central government like Abraham Lincoln are Republicans. It's those pesky Democrats that keep bleating about States Rights and threatening Secession again! Oh wait a minute ... you mean the political landscape has changed and those folks are now Republicans? Rick Perry is a Republican? Wanting to dismantle the central government is now a Republican idea? Huh! Go figure.

That would mean black people would be voting overwhelmingly for Democrats if that was the case. What's that? You say they ARE voting overwhelmingly for Democrats? Guess it must be true that things have changed, then.

One of the more absurd statements I've read lately.

Actually it isn't.

The “Ic” Factor : The New Yorker

Now you should know that this is a longer article than you'd normally find on any of the Murdoch publications, but I'd suggest you read it. It's actually worthwhile.

My favorite part is the line where the author says that calling the Democratic Party the Democrat Party is a lot like calling Israel 'the Zionist entity'. It's as if by not calling them by their correct name, they'll cease to exist.

When people stop playing the card when there is no racism involved.

I rest my case.

and who is the judge as to when racism is involved? You?

Brilliant. If we simply don't talk about race issues then racism doesn't exist.

Maybe if we just stop talking about Meth as a problem and it will just simply go away.

Didn't imply that. If you were following I was responding to W's post of "When are people going to admit that complaining about the race card is often pure racism?"
Maybe I took it wrong. IMO, it is saying if someone states someone stance is playing the "race card", that person is a racist. I disagree. Stating someone is playing the race card may be justified and may not be a racist comment.

I was being someone sarcastic. So are you agreeing with the statement that Wiggins made?

He said is "often" racist. Not "IS" racist. And yes I do agree with that.
