JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KCTV) - Some women in the Missouri House of Representatives want to limit when men can get vasectomies.

The proposal would only allow men to undergo the procedure to save their lives "or prevent substantial and irreversible physical impairment."

And I say "Why not?". If women are not allowed to have contraception, then why should men have it. Let's ALL go back to the Middle Ages together, men and women alike. Let's ALL join in on the insanity that is sweeping the nation. Why should only women have all the fun?

But, seriously, I think a great point is being made by these women.

Article is here.

This is getting ridiculous. Nobody but the absolutely insane are trying to take contraception away from women. The debate is whether or not birh control should be free and whether or not religious groups should be mandated to pay for birth control through insurance.

So tired of the fear mongering, hyperbolic bull**** and the people who continue to spread it.

but that has been resolved
religious organizations with objections will not incur the cost of contraceptives
the controversy should have ended there
but it didn't. even after Obama let the air out of the GOP balloon

a women just stood in front of congress claiming that insurance companies should be obligated to include birth control. I hardly see the issue as settled.

Completely.

I guess it's easier to take simplistic, inflammatory strawman positions than actually discuss the matter intelligently.

Whatever! What they are doing is not clever or relevant or comparable. I hope they all get voted out of office when their terms are up.

I think this was more of a jab at abortion law than contraceptive payments. The language is closer. The article writer seems to think it's about contraception, but I don't really see the link.

This topic interesting to me - Men wanting vasectomies and women wanting men to have them.

When it came up I didn't want my husband to get one: he still wants children - I don't. . . thus: I didn't want him to not be able to have more children if the worst thing happens to me and I die or something and he remarries (morbid? I thought it was respectful).

I also didn't want him to have to risk issues that can go along with vasectomies, as well. While there are many issues that women can deal with when geting a tubal: for me - It solved some of my issues, relieved my personal stress. Him getting a vasectomy would have done none of that so in those regards it seemed pointless. Men who've had them also have had sex-related problems and issues later on in life with their genetalia . . . not a common thing but too risky in my opinion.

So I'm not identifying with women like my sister who argued with her husband that she was tired of being the one being 'poked at by drs' and insisted he get a vasectomy.

Though I know none of this is the point of the women in the OP who are pushing a frivolous legislation all for the sake of 'making a point' - in respect to them, I find their waste of the legislative process to be a bit offensive. Though I get what they're trying to do here. Still - that's NOT the purpose of the legislative system.

We shouldn't be using our sexuality, sexual reproduction as a tool topic to smack eachother around with.

What are we? Ovary slinging ****s or something?

I'm never going to get a vasectomy anyways, and if it makes the pro-life argument more legit, I say hell yes, vote for this bill. :D

More civil discourse I see.

When people are ACTUALLY pushing to ban birth control pills, let's talk about banning condoms. When people are talking about banning tubal ligation then let's talk about banning vasectomies.

What does a vasectomy have to do with the pro-life movement?

I suspect the women in question were responding to all the legislation lately condifying into law precedures that are forced upon unwilling women seeking legal abortions. They figured if the state can control women's bodies and reproductive choices, they should control men's bodies and reproductive choices as well.

See this is exactly why women shouldn't hold political office.

LOL - nevermind that men have waged that exact argument against women.

When ANY form of birth control (diaphragm, condom, pill, sponge) was ILLEGAL just who do you think was in charge of making it illegal and then threw women in jail just because they didn't want to have kids once a year?

MEN

So much for men being able to make this country better.

You need to can your sexist views and try to see things with a more open mind as to cause and effect. . . demonize women's need for birth control and our country reverst to more primitive times and gets flushed - with far reaching affects that will exceed your imagination in ways you likely couldn't imagine - and all would be negative.

I'm not disagreeing with you exactly, but when did all this go on?

It came and went in varying degrees throughout our history - 18th, 19th Century. Illegalizatoin of birth control was finally ended in the early 20th century - but not without a fight. Birth control movement in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

One of the most potent acts to limit birth control and the distribution of birth-control educational materials was the Comstock Act Comstock laws - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's pathetic that after ALL this time since it became legal to use and educate concerning birth control that so many people stil believe it shouldn't be permitted or it should continually be limited or made more and more difficult to obtain, afford or fill.

Ah, thanks.

yea, good luck with that, as if men ever had a choice.

This did make me curious as to vasectomy statistics: something I don't recall ever reading up on before. You know: why not! We might all learn something:

vasectomy statistics

As many as one in 100 vasectomies may fail to prevent pregnancy within five years of the procedure, a new study shows.

Researchers say that the study shows that like other birth control methods, vasectomies are not always 100% effective.

The study showed that six pregnancies were reported among 540 women within six weeks to 1.5 years after their husbands had a vasectomy.

Vasectomy.com - Vasectomy and Reversal Information and Doctors
Cost: $500 - $1,000 (goddamn - that's cheaper than a damn transmission swap)

http://www.mamashealth.com/men/vas.asp:

Approximately half a million vasectomies are performed in the United States each year.
About one out of six men over age 35 has been vasectomized, the prevalence increasing along with education and income.
Among married couples in this country, only female sterilization and oral contraception are relied upon more often for family planning.

WOW - about 1 million are performed each year - had no idea.

Vasectomy FAQ

The satisfaction with the procedure is generally high. The chief causes of regret are:- The results of an ill-considered decision (often due to making the decision under pressure), Changes in circumstances some years later (such as the death of a child or remarriage), and "Post vasectomy pain syndrome" (PVP). It's worth adding that satisfaction rates are highest amongst men who were the ones who suggested vasectomy first. Our online survey has more on this.

So - I gather from reading through all of these articles is that men aren't discouraged from having it by drs, etc . . . they're more worried about ejaculation, testosterone, semen changes and masculinity.

No one's trying to ban BC except for these idiots.

Well aware

You did, however, purport that women don't belong in politics - that it's a male-only club.

My response still stands on calling you out on such sexist stupidity. In the hands of males our country has been WORSE off - not better . . . no matter what you want to think. Throughout our history females, blacks, all minorities other than white males have been nothing but taken advantage of, denied 'god given' rights (that conservative pro-lifers claim everyone has) and have been treated as 2nd class citizens through the 'genius' and wide consensus of males in this country.

You should really be ashamed of this past: most men are and make efforts to not permit us to fall back into the ways of the old.

You, and others like you however - support the very values and ideas that would degenerate us if you could have all of your views impinged on US citizens as a whole.

I think it's ridiculous that you want to govern what I can do with my body - but the moment some women make an effort to try to suggest that they should be able to do the same to yours you say 'they don't even belong in politics!'

Hypocrisy is ripe.

Absolutely, vasectomies shouldn't be covered by insurance.

They should also restrict all forms of plastic surgery for life saving reasons too.

I'm not the one trying to pass idiotic laws, so whatever.

When I get home I plan to have a vasectomy, and I fully expect to pay for the entire thing in cash. I'm not asking women to pay for anything I wouldn't pay for myself.
